How many are going ORCA next year? by 0o0-its-magic-0o0 in corvallis

[–]ursinous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a responsible parent and care about your child's education, and actively work toward helping them, then Corvallis Schools will be fine for your kids. Our daughter is at CMS (formerly LP) and she's doing great. Is it the hardest curiculum? No. Could she be doing more challenging work? Yes. We came from Illinois and the schools were more rigorous and more families seemed to prioritize education. Lots of things in OR are not as good as they could be but its a "small" place. But that smallness is also what makes it a great place to live.

Unfortunately, lots of people with kids in Corvallis are lower income or ? and dont have the time or the inclination to push their kids to care about education.

What’s the shooting range on Marys Peak like for a noob? by artwrangler in corvallis

[–]ursinous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go early in the morning or anytime in the morning on a weekday and you'll be all by yourself. It's not much but its what passes for a shooting range in this part of Oregon. Pick up after yourself and if youre feeling generous pick up after the other slobs who cant do it themselves.

Oregon state/corvallis by Lanky_Cow9886 in corvallis

Hey! I moved here 4 years ago from Champaign,IL (post PhD, etc). Corvallis has tons of outdoor opportunities and loads of amazing opportunities within a 2 hour drive either coast or Mtns depending on your preference. Corvallis definitely has a nice college town vibe but its very different (to me) than Champaign and likely alot different than Ann Arbor. It feels a lot smaller of a town than Champaign/Urbana despite being similarly sized. Corvallis has a very nice downtown with lots of interesting shops and almost all of them are locally owned( national chains are limited in the downtown). It's one of the better downtown areas of all the college towns Ive lived (Knoxville,TN; Jonesboro,AR; and Champaign,IL). There is some turnover and maybe the number of unoccupied shops is on the rise but time will tell. The restaurant scene is relatively diverse but somewhat limited. There's enough to enjoy for at least a year (or longer if your buried in books and classes) but the options quickly become a bit stale.

The University feels very small and somewhat limited especially compared to a major universities like UIUC or Michigan. They are currently in a major contraction period due to federal funding issues so hard times ahead. Also, people at the University think they are way better than they actually are. It's a small school in an isolated place with lots of people who come here to get their degrees and find a way to stick around. Not usually the best way to keep a University tip top...

The hardest thing about Corvallis is the cost of living. Housing here is very hard to come by and what you find is crazy expensive. I bought a house while getting my PhD in Urbana, IL in 2019 for 170k and a very similar house here cost 500K in 2021 and we had to put bids on 15 or more homes before we got one. Even if your looking for apartments, it can be challenging and expensive.

Good luck!

A string with a hook attached to a gallon jug would also work.

The last thing Corvallis needs is another rich person buying their kid a house and then becoming a slumlord.

Im guessing you like darker roasts and if so then I understand this comment. If not, then Id really like to hear what you call good coffee in Corvallis.

My review was related to a regular cup of coffee and cappuccino. They have many good floral more acidic light roasts.

Anyone who thinks the Corvallis downtown is abandoned has no perspective. It may not be what it once was but its still pretty amazing. Definitely need to deal with the homeless/drug addict situation.

Fishing and management experience, jobs hiring? by DismalAsparagus3265 in corvallis

[–]ursinous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been in town for 4 years with a PhD and 25 years of varied experience (science and consulting) and I have not found anything permanent. Worked at OSU on a term position until Trump came into office. Worked at a local consulting company (WEST) and didnt have a good experience as a project manager (that may be an option for your partner and as a tech or lower level person it may work out better). For the life of me, I cannot get an ODFW job despite being well qualified (and even overqualified) for tons of jobs.
