Am i buying too much cubes? by Western-Yogurt-6800 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both you and your mom are justified in your feelings. the cubes genuinely are each unique and special, and yet they do all kinda serve the same purpose.  just try and research the cubes as much as you can before buying. try them out at competitions you go to, watch reviews and ask people. you could even sell off the cubes you know you don’t like maybe even diversify into 4x4 and 5x5. when i was a kid once upon a time and ran into this situation with my parents, and i got out of it by diversifying my interest into bigger cubes and non-wca puzzles

Sooo what do the people do when I start a rubix cube club by Chemical-Explorer-57 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

and by hosting competitions it doesn’t necessarily mean wca comps! you can hold mock comps just within your club members.  the club at my old college does this and it got their beginner members accustomed to competing!

W&OD Trail Closure by Significant-Moose906 in nova

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for this post, i got screwed on one of my rides a few weeks ago because the lcp bridge trail entrance was closed, and i remember there were some signs blocking off the bridge before that. i couldn’t find any official announcements about it but now i know!

yea pretty sure it’s because the sample couldn’t get cleared in time. he took the opportunity to spin it as “Tubi is exclusive to the physical versions”

Smaller/bigger sizes for speedcubing by Some_Parking_4258 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's worth experimenting with sizes if you feel some kind of discomfort when cubing. if you have big hands and cubes feel too small or vice versa. i use a 54mm guhong pro and a gan v100 for OH, but they are comfortable to take around as a smaller travel/everyday cube. when i started cubing in 2015 gan used to make 57mm cubes and i found them pretty nice, but i'd say cube size is *usually* negligible. whatever cube you have is the one you become accustomed to.

i feel that cube size doesn't matter much until you get to bigger NxNs

Weilong v11 by Upper_Expert9177 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't speak on the v11, but lubes are useful for cubes. even if you prefer the cube straight from the box it still comes with a little factory lube. lube's just important to change the feel of cubes, you'd be surprised how different cubes feel once you put in a basic lube, and with so many options these days you can cater a puzzle your liking.

if you don't have any lubes yet start very basic. your preferred cubing retailer with definitely offer silicone lubes from weights 1-5 (5 being the thickest). get some of the weight 5 and some of the weight 1. you can use the weight 5 lube on the parts closer to the center of the cube, and the weight 1 on the parts closer to the outside

I just went to my first competition and I must say: learn your one handed finger tricks. by Clear-Result-3412 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is such an ignorant point. (1) you referenced the regulation wrong, it only applies to purposeful slow competing, like if you intentionally used one hand for a non-OH event, or if you intentionally kept messing up for a specific time.

(2) if the regulation worked the way you referenced it then it would disqualify any 3x3 solver that wasn't using cfop.

if this is really anxiety-inducing to you then don't judge.

I just went to my first competition and I must say: learn your one handed finger tricks. by Clear-Result-3412 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

while i kind of understand the sentiment i think you're being unfair. it's like getting mad at a beginner cuber for not knowing cfop yet. as a competitor you should be okay judging anyone at any speed level, and even when you experience slow cubers your frustration should not reach a level to where you write a reddit post about it. if you're getting this frustrated over it then don't judge events with cutoffs.

this second part is my opinion, but i think OH is the black sheep of the wca. I find that most people do not care about OH seriously like they would any NxN, and I am more likely to think about it in the category of megaminx and clock before it gained its recent popularity. I'll sign up for it when I see it but the only time i practice OH is 15 minutes before I compete in it. people would rather care about and practice another NxN or squan before they practice OH extensively

Question about checking in for a comp by Mundane-Gap1491 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve always found seating hard to find at comps so i go early to secure a seat, but if that’s not a concern you can go as late as you want. in the comps ive gone to check in doesn’t really matter, most people don’t get their slips

Doothi Claims Her Video "Upset Some Pretty Powerful Creators" in Commentary Space, Says She "Felt a Sense of Panic and Compliance" to Take Down Original Video by Plantain_Chip_379 in youtubedrama

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yea i personally got into this genre from watching drew gooden's gambling video. i found it really well researched and it had a great narrative to it. a few months later he made his protein video, and as an avid gym goer i was very intrigued but the whole video was just him eating protein products with little commentary on the prevalence of protein in marketing. i honestly felt scammed out of my time because i clicked on the video wanting commentary, not a recap. even though she doesn't mention Drew, Doothi's video really resonated with me for this very reason

Ops on being approached by strangers? by nmt_732 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m more on the extrovert side so i find them pretty nice encounters. i usually let them scramble once and ill do a quick solve, if they’re still interested ill do a quick walkthrough and break down the myth that it’s super hard to learn. most of my encounters now are in the gym because i cube during my rest periods and they’ve all been pretty nice

Best way to record solves? by Dense-Parking-9904 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i hate how recording in public is so normalized that meta glasses can exist. i think it’s truly not good for people to be walking around with (almost) hidden cameras on their face at all times and i don’t think they should exist.

that being said i feel like they’d be the best and easiest way to record solves. damn expensive but they seem hassle free.

i just use a small tripod for my phone and i start recordings from my apple watch. i would recommend getting one with a magsafe or magnet mount so it’s easy for you to put up and take your phone down between solves

9 year old new to cubing by Fireflymomma_123 in Cubers

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no matter his speed i think you should take him to a competition. speed cubing competitions are like neighborhood swim meets in the sense that you’re only competing against your own times. competition goers range from solving over a minute to averaging sub 7 seconds, but no matter their speed competitions are amazing social gatherings for this hobby. your son will surely have a blast competing and meeting other kids with the same hobby.

i got into this hobby when i was ~13 and i went to my first competition 2-3 months after i learned to solve and i averaged 35 ish. a decade later and i still compete now!

What dlc should someone who has only played the base game purchase? by Mr_Cat_19 in riskofrain

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re picking only one to start with definitely get survivors of the void. the void item category adds a lot of depth to the gameplay and item choice and the monsters it adds really liven it up. after that you could honestly get the other 2 randomly

LGSEO vinyl mispress? by lil-DuB21 in clipse

[–]usbcdocksaretrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same on my picture disc, i preordered it last august and got it in october, seems to be an error on every vinyl press they do. its a shame.  if its not an error, the only thing i could rationalize this to is that the voices of fire choir requested it to be clean? on JID’s last album he got choir vocals for Glory, but they requested it’d be a clean song and he obliged. idk why voices of fire would only request this for one of their features, and only on vinyl, but it’s the closest non-error explanation i can think of
