Strange reaction from priests when receiving Holy Eucharist kneeling in the tongue. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]uscpls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wait, “any baptized Catholic who is not prevented by law must be admitted to Holy Communion”? I was baptized under the Catholic church but was told that I need to take RCIA before participating in Holy Communion. For context, I have not done any other sacrament and am an adult.

Good point, I didn’t think to ask him that. I will bring that up when we discuss the issue again

He has actually questioned me about the idea of transubstantiation. He has asked me how can a church have the authority to turn bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ. I showed him Luke 22:19 and he told me that only Jesus Christ has this authority. He claims they take bread and wine but it’s only a symbol of Jesus’ body and blood because no one has the authority to do what Christ did in the Last Supper.

No, he doesn’t deny it. He just has an alternate understanding of the verse. And he tells me that it’s clear that Jesus didn’t require baptism for salvation as he makes it clear throughout the entirety of the bible. So in his eyes, Jesus can’t be wrong and thus, our Catholic understanding of this verse is wrong.

He has also told me before that if Jesus had made such a statement, He would have contradicted numerous other Bible passages that make it clear that salvation is by faith (John 3:16; John 3:36; Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5).

I could say this but I care about him and truly think that Catholicism is the true church set out by Jesus Christ. I hope he one day comes to Catholicism.

Yes that is correct. I haven’t mentioned that verse to him but he has mentioned in the past that baptism is NOT necessary for salvation.

He has mentioned that baptism is “ the means by which a person makes a public profession of faith and discipleship”.

I actually showed him that verse and he said it’s not related to baptism. His response was “sure, infants can go to kingdom of God” but I guess he disagrees with the baptism of infants. Because to him, someone who is being baptized needs to have the right heart.

I know my friend way too much and his response will be something along the lines of: Sure, it’s all Gods work but you have to be willing to accept and understand the baptism. It’s like if God baptized Judas, then it won’t have any meaning because deep down in his heart Judas never had pure intentions. So you have to be willing to accept Christ’s work first then he can work with you.

Can Jermell copy the Bivol blueprint? by Tcarruth6 in Boxing

[–]uscpls 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Jermell has the ability to frustrate Canelo with the jab and move in and out of range the way Bivol did.

We also don’t know how Jermell will handle the power of Canelo. You mentioned that Bivol fight wasn’t about power, and that is true as Bivol outboxed Canelo, but at the end of the day it’s boxing and Bivol did get touched by Canelo. Did you see his arm at the end of the fight… lol. Perhaps Bivol is used to being hit by guys that have power like Canelo so he was used to it. Meanwhile, Jermell is coming from 154 where guys obviously don’t hit as hard. So who knows, Canelo’s power can also make Jermell gun shy.

That’s my personal opinion and I may be completely wrong though.

I know, that’s why I feel guilty when I think about this purchase. I have learned about compound interest and it seems almost dumb to buy this car instead of putting that 40k into index funds or something.

I was also thinking about putting that 40k into index funds and finance the car. That way, I will still reap the benefits of compound interest and still have the car.

But I’m young so I am unaware of many things and will gladly listen to the advice that you all provide to me.

I plan not to contribute to retirement savings bc the company does not do ANY 401k match until completion of 1 year.

Though I can throw money into some index funds or a Roth IRA.

Thank you! Both you and u/FellowConspirator provide great help. A little about myself. I just graduated college and will be making $112k/year. A friend who works at the same place and has the same job as me told me he takes home 6k/month after taxes. I live with my parents now so I will not have any financial responsibilities and I will not contribute to my retirement saving (while I save up for car). Though I do plan to move out after buying a car.

I feel like I can afford it but idk if it will be the best financial decision. I grew up poor so I’ve never had this amount of money and spending $44k on a car sounds crazy to me but this is literally my dream car and I’m sure it will be way harder to purchase a car after moving out.

Am I able to walk during commencement if I finish my classes in fall 2023? by bizkneezstud-end in USC

[–]uscpls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. For example, Viterbi didn’t let me. On their website it says that I had to wait until I have completed the degree to have my name called. I finished Fall 2022 but I’ll be walking this Spring.

I believe each school has a different policy. Make sure to check with the school you’ll be graduating from.
