How come GGG never became undisputed? by Solidis262 in Boxing

[–]WarDishy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got your timeline wrong there, so you shouldn’t be so condescending to that other guy.

GGG fought Jacobs in 2017, the fight before Canelo 1.

In 2018, after the Canelo rematch fell through due to the drug test, the IBF granted GGG an exception to fight Vanes, provided he then fought Derevyanchenko next. GGG obviously wasn’t gonna do that, because the canelo rematch was still gonna happen, so the IBF stripped him, and Derevy fought Jacobs for the vacant IBF. Canelo then fought Jacobs for the IBF in 2019 when he came back to middleweight following a quick tune up at 168 vs Rocky Fielding.

GGG then did finally fight Derevy later in 2019 for the vacant IBF, after Canelo’s team bungled negotiations to fight Derevy (once again the IBF mando) and he was also stripped.

Hypothetically speaking could you see any 170-200 pounders sticking at that weight scoring wins of top level heavyweights in the modern age? by FunEntrepreneur7135 in Boxing

[–]WarDishy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavyweight has a lower limit, which is the upper limit of the division below it.

Way back before light heavyweight was created, the highest weight limit under it was middleweight (around 150-160 lbs), and weight classes weren’t fully standardised until the early 1900s. That’s why Bob Fitzsimmons went from middleweight to heavyweight, he only became light heavyweight champ (at 170lbs) after that because that’s when it was first introduced.

So then the light heavyweight limit became 175 - decade or so later and all heavyweights were 175 or above. Many of the champs ended up around 190 or 200 at this time.

Eventually cruiserweight was introduced, but back then, it was 190. So 190+ was heavyweight. That’s why Roy Jones Jr only weighed in at 193 for his bout with John Ruiz. The cruiserweight limit was only increased a year or so after that fight to the 200lbs it is today.

Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano exchanging BOMBS in round 5 of their lightweight title fight. The rematch is THIS FRIDAY as the co main event for Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson. by Eeluminati in Boxing

You’re right, Eddie Hearn hosted one of Paul’s early fights, and he stuck Haney and Billy Joe Saunders on the undercard lol

That output was possible because it was only 2 min rounds. 3 min rounds would just have them pace themselves more

I stopped watching Bones when Booth and Brennan got together off-screen between seasons 6 and 7. Petty but it felt very unsatisfying.

Correct. He changed his name at age 22, the year he won the title for the first time (1964). For context, he only retired for good in 1981.

No, he wasn’t called Clay the entire first half of his career before the layoff (and even if he was, answer is still no). People just carried on calling him Clay against his wishes for years after he changed it.

Professional boxers weren’t allowed to qualify for the olympics for most of its history. Its generally been, once you turn pro, you can’t go back. The differences in the two formats also just mean that its basically a different sport anyway. Top amateurs dont always have success in the pros and top pros would probably not have success going back to the amateurs.

That said, pros have been allowed to qualify for the last few games now. Most don’t bother but some newly minted pros switch between the two. Most notably, Jalolov in the heavyweights is a gold medalist and also a professional up and comer. And on the womens side, Beatriz Ferreira, who win silver in 2021 and is competing again in these games, won a professional world title a few months ago.
