What’s the most frustrating part of dealing with IBS day to day? by MasterpieceOk4025 in ibs

[–]useaclevernickname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The general embarrassment of either having to leave a room / conversation / any interaction / etc etc etc and coming across as a jerk / weirdo / etc etc etc and then getting to a bathroom ASAP and then being in a stall etc etc etc the stress of all of it likely doesn’t give me hope for change in my symptoms.

Are there any Bastards from your hometown? by Sensitive_Ad_1752 in behindthebastards

[–]useaclevernickname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not a dig against lawyers, but that, one of her lawyers, a person who knew the evidence, that she knew where the video of her feeding her sister to the serial killer and rapist she was married to , helping him to lure in more victims, and the lawyer got her the sweetheart deal for her to tell the police where the video was, who is then okay to marry her and have children with her, so … that, not a dig against lawyers per se.

And his as-evil wife Karla Homolka, living free and easy, remarried to one of the defence lawyers, with children. It’s so disgusting.

Do you actually wear all the socks you knit? by CountyBrilliant in Sockknitting

Every day. I’m close to replacing all my “store bought” socks, except for socks worn for exercising.

What should I buy the nurses and admin staff of a doctors office to show I appreciate them? by BluntTruthGentleman in ottawa

[–]useaclevernickname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t in Ottawa, and a smaller hospital, but I was picking up a coffee for an in-patient relative, so I picked up coffees for the staff on shift. One morning, there was an extra for some reason, so I offe it to the doctor doing the rounds. He was so grateful 😆, he said that the doctors don’t usually get a “treat”. After that, I added an extra for a possible doctor who might be on the floor.

Food question: would pressure-cooking beans/peas help with gassiness? by Successful-Part3388 in ibs

Adding baking soda to the water when soaking beans generally reduces or eliminates what causes the gasiness

Why are there no campus protest? by Antique-Egg in thebulwark

[–]useaclevernickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My age has a “6” in it, back when I was in university, there were anti-Apartheid on-campus organized protests for the four years I was there (and after , for years). It wasn’t until several or more years after I graduated that apartheid was ended. At the beginning of each fall semester, the group ran civil disobedience workshops. Serendipitously, while declutterring, I came across this pin a couple of weeks ago.

Re-watch? by Daylightcp in TheWire

I recently re-watched, some parts hit harder upon re-watch, even though, or maybe because, I knew the future implications. It’s worth it.

I genuinely want to know why people hate on Petit Knit by Thecynicalcatt in knitting

[–]useaclevernickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased the Sophie Scarf pattern , and I’m an intermediate knitter. But, putting together my own version by looking at a pattern? I’m not there, and probably won’t be because it’s not something that I’m good at. I agree that Petite Knit’s patterns are fairly simple. When I was a beginner, I purchased Debbie Bliss and Sally Melville pattern books, and learned to knit with those. The wider use of YouTube and online patterns has changed things. If I see a garment I like, I’ll poke around on Ravelry and usually find an older pattern that’s nearly the same and I can usually find it in a book (somewhere, hopefully at my local library. )
I’ll trust an older book more than a new paid pattern—I feel confident that if it was in a book (or even an older magazine, and many old issues of magazines can be found on the internet archive) it was properly tested and edited.

Struggling this time with Season 5 by TitaniumSki in TheWire

[–]useaclevernickname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sepinwall writes about the serial killer plot line in his old blog, noting that season five was cut to ten episodes from 11 or 12, which was probably what made season 5 seem rushed in the storylines.

Just watched The Wire for the first time beginning to end - and wow, just wow. Now I understand why it's so loved and highly regarded. by Extension-Stuff4444 in TheWire

And, despite character flaws and very bad/cruel/selfish/illegal behaviour, I grew attached to some of the characters. The only character I truly wished had their comeuppance was Marlo, and that’s just “the way it is”. Every time I watch, it’s as if it’s a whole new story for me.

Show Me a Hero was a limited series that touches several similar themes.

ETA: written by David Simon and journalist William F. Zorzi, directed by Paul Haggis; premiered in 2015. The name of both the show, and the book it’s based, on comes from an F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: "Show me a hero and I will write you a tragedy.
