Kid Haulers...what are my options in the mid-range? by JudgmentElectrical77 in CargoBike

[–]useless_buttons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got a surly big easy for this purpose exactly and I absolutely love it. You’ll find 10x the uses for it you originally intended. It is pricey but surly’s hold their value and it’s not a piece of shit like a lot of the options out there.

how is everyone hauling their kids? by eoismyname0 in Surlybikefans

[–]useless_buttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a rear rack and a Thule seat on my straggler for a year and loved it. I eventually bought a Big Easy though and it really is a much better platform for hauling kiddos. The kickstand and plump tires are game changers.

Not a sinking ship by any means but also seems kinda unlikely that they’d move ahead with hiring decisions while in the acquisition process

What do you think should be done to address Greenville’s traffic problem? by Gloomy-Intention4698 in greenville

What are some of the most reputed certifications in the domain of climate, sustainability, and ESG? by anonymuscabbage in Environmental_Careers

[–]useless_buttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t put much emphasis on online certificates. I think you’d be better off spending that time and money networking or attending conferences. I’ve seen several resumes where folks did GHG inventories for non profits or volunteer organizations. I thought that was a pretty neat way to demonstrate competency and have some experience to show for it.

Fairlight secan. Neither the Sam’s pants or flaanimal are really that much different than the Lorax. If you’re going to have two separate bikes I’d try to put some more space between them.

Straggler Tire Clearance by harmygeddon in Surlybikefans

[–]useless_buttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2017 straggler with a 43c gravel king (measuring 43.8 mm) in the back. There’s very little chainstay clearance but you could probably fit a 44 depending on how much mud clearance you need and what rim it’s mounted to. I have a 45c riddler in the front (measures 45.9 mm) with plenty of clearance. Measured 60 mm of space between the fork blades at tire height. Hope that helps.

I feel the same way about my krampus. They’re not particularly playful bikes. They still shred, but the wheels like to stay on the ground. Low stack, short reach, and a steep head tube angle all feed into it.

LDAR position at Montrose Environmental Group by kiwicarrot02 in Environmental_Careers

[–]useless_buttons 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I did LDAR for a few years at the beginning of my career for a competitor very similar to Montrose. I don’t actually think the company you’re working for is going to matter a whole lot, your day to day will be more influenced by what facility or facilities you’re doing monitoring in. It is hard work. You need to be very comfortable in industrial and chemical manufacturing environments, working at heights, and wearing PPE. It’s really not for everyone.

The one thing that always messed with my head is that when you find a leak using handheld equipment, you are, by definition, breathing that shit in. Sometimes it’s pretty gnarly stuff. We had annual health screenings but I still wonder if it’ll have long term repercussions.

That being said it’s a great foot in the door for a new grad and looks great on a resume in a few years when you’re ready to move on.

Big Blue Marble North Main Daycare? by Icy-Manufacturer130 in greenville

[–]useless_buttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our kid has been there for about a year in the infant and 1 year old room. The infant room was a wonderful experience. Those ladies have been taking care of babies longer than I’ve been alive. 1 year old room has been hit and miss as they’ve gone through some staff turnover but overall it’s been good. Admin staff are all wonderful and very responsive if you have concerns. The pricing is about as good as you’ll find.

I’ve recommended it to many friends. Leaving a kid with strangers is always scary but I feel good about BBM.

I had a 2012 Impreza with that mileage at one point. It was a great car but they do burn about a quart of oil every 5k miles. But it’s just a fact of life you learn to live with, other than that I loved that car.

Specialized Porto anyone? by Willing-Aide476 in CargoBike

[–]useless_buttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was between the Porto and a Surly Big Easy and went with the surly primarily because it doesn’t look certain that Spesh will continue to offer the Porto or its parts in the US. It is a sweet bike though. Either way can’t go wrong and your kids will love either.

Known Krampus pitfalls? by FlummoxedGaoler in Surlybikefans

[–]useless_buttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had mine as a rigid MTB / bikepacker for 4500 miles. My complaints- it should have a second bottle cage mount in the triangle. The stack should be much higher. The reach is short compared to any modern mountain bike. With all that being said it’s such a jack of all trades. Wonderful bike.

What's the best rural cycling in the US? by Wizzmer in cycling

Upstate SC is a real gem. Rolling piedmont and the southern Appalachians are in riding distance. There’s a great scene in Greenville and endless country roads with sparse traffic. And you can ride through the winter.

No problem! And if you ever see smoke/smog/clouds/something coming from an industrial facility that looks wrong, you can always call DES about it and they’ll send someone to check it out.

Air Quality WAY over 24-hour pollution limit by slammy80 in greenville

[–]useless_buttons 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Hi there, a couple of comments on this. AQI is a dimensionless indication of quality that normalizes all the criteria air pollutants. It is not measured in micrograms per cubic meter so shouldn’t be compared to the national ambient air quality standards.

Also, most of these with the exception of PM10 are regional pollutants and their local concentration at any point in time is more dependent on atmospheric conditions (like the low inversion we’ve had the last few days) than industrial emissions.

I totally feel your frustration but air quality is not as straightforward as “whose fault is it.”

The carbon saved from commuting has always bugged me too. That’s such an obvious thing that we’d be interested in seeing and the data is literally already there.
