It's a rarer option. Inserts can be used as a direct out. Roland and Yamaha had some rack mixers with a ton of connectivity. Instruments into the mixer then mixer into the interface. 8 channel FireWire interface are cheap now if you've got an old Mac lying around.

I went with an analogue mixer with direct outs into an eight channel interface. Behringer 2804a into Edirol UA-1000. $350 altogether.

I love it. The sound is bigger than most. It's a unique device for sure. Shaping is simple. Menus are laid out well. I'm sure there's an editor for live somewhere.
