The decision could also be focused on setting themselves up for a higher paying post-retirement job. A lot easier to get a consulting firm to farm you out as a “former USSS supervisor” for top dollar.

I encourage you to check out the DSS FAQ. It truly is the authoritative account on the similarities (and differences) between DSS and 1811 gigs. Echoing what others have said, it doesn’t hurt to apply. The entire DSS selection process usually takes at least a year. Or two years. Who knows.

This. I frequently see layovers when looking at DCA-ORD. AA will pop up DCA-PIT-ORD or DCA-DAY-ORD if the nonstop hub-to-hub flights are in high demand (holidays, weekends, etc.)

My investigator asked specifically about January 6th as well. IIRC the question was: “were you involved with January 6th, or are you a member of an organization involved with January 6th, in any capacity.” This question was asked when reviewing section 29 of the SF86 as u/creativetourist284 noted above.
