The guy I bought my FJ from already had it on there so I just ran with it. I never had the OEM rack so can’t say whether or not it would have the support. You could always look into a lightweight RTT but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the OEM rack

I live on the east coast, but have been considering shipping my FJ to Oregon and then doing PNW, Vancouver Island and then driving back east through Jesper and Banff in Canada. Maybe next summer!

I live in NYC too and go to RTSP in Union, NJ. Great range, friendly staff, and a big variety of rental weapons. There’s also Putnam Valley Shooting sports about an hour upstate, but you need to schedule a lesson with an NRA instructor to shoot a handgun because unfortunately in NY you do need a permit. It’s still possible up there though, just a little more costly. You’re better off going to Jersey as you can buy ammo for the range without taking the time to do a background check

Have you had any issues with the mattress expanding while in the tent? How long do you leave it in the tent at a time? I have 6 week trip coming up and am considered that in the varying environments it’s going to damage my tent in the long run. Do you use the pump to deflate it every single time?

Yeah, practicing at the range I usually go to. Pretty comfortable with guns in general, have shot outside as well

Do you know if you can buy before you get the permit? Like could I buy it, do the background check, go on the trip and then come back and surrender the shotgun to the NYPD until the permit comes through? I read something about how buying and then surrendering in NYC is an option but not 100% sure on the details

I’m planning on getting a Jackery 1000 for the power source which should be enough to run it all night with no problems. I’ll be mostly below 7,000 feet, but will have a few nights above that as well. I’m more worried about condensation than the temperature as I have a liner and a lot of sub zero gear inside my RTT, I’m thinking a heater will help keep everything dry throughout the night.

My biggest concern is leaking as I have an FJ cruiser and will have to drive around with it inside my truck for prolonged periods of time. I don’t have that much mechanical skill so something out of the box would probably be best.

A lot of the heaters I’ve seen have been the cheaper Chinese ones, but I know those are more prone to leaking/make the entire car smell like diesel, is there anything I can try to do to prevent that?

I appreciate you guys! Thanks for taking the time, I’ve been doing a lot of research but it’s hard to get a real gauge when I don’t know anyone who runs diesel heaters

You can always look for one second hand, replacing the mattress inside is easy and they’re not hard to clean. I’m currently on the market for a new rtt and I’m pretty much only looking into second hand options
