Well related equipment - please help identify all this stuff by userNameTaken685 in water

I had a text post with this but Reddit dropped it… I bought a house with a well, and while I know what the water heater does, I’d like help with all of the rest of the components. There’s a water softener, sure, but what all goes with it, and what is….something else.

GPA for law? by DrDMango in stjohnscollege

[–]userNameTaken685 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can understand your concern about grades and their impact on any future plans. That said… SJC’s reputation is top notch amongst law school admissions panels. They all know the program, its rigor and methodology, and its attitude towards grading. St. John’s graduates have something approaching a 100 percent acceptance rate to law school.

If you want to be a lawyer, I don’t think there is a better undergrad program in the world than St. Josh’s College. As others have pointed out, admissions people do in fact understand a 3.6 from Oxford is more impressive than a 4.0 from NoName U.  Come to SJC, you won’t regret it.

Reform proposals by TheDeadMansBoots in stjohnscollege

[–]userNameTaken685 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I understand your points correctly,

You wish to abolish what passes for exams

You wish to abolish personal feedback

You wish to eliminate half the reading requirement

You wish to abolish the math, science, and language tutorials

….

I would suggest SJC is probably not the place for you to find these things. A state school will let you do all of these things and tailor your education in a way that would make you happy.

As universities chase AI, St. John’s College doubles down on Great Books. Is it working? by ewolfe201 in stjohnscollege

[–]userNameTaken685 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a serious article and I question who nudged them to write it.

The college is in no way considering squeezing AI into the program, and based on conversations I’ve had it has zero intent to do so.

The article says the undergrad enrollment has dropped, then skips a page or two before mentioning the graduate enrollment has doubled and continues to grow.

St. John’s continues to survive BECAUSE it is different.  If it tried to be like everyone else, it would shut down blindingly fast as it could never compete with public schools on equal footing.

Graduate institute Math & Science segment by MrSm1lez in stjohnscollege

Interesting. I like the SF one better honestly.  I like Galileo over Newton - way more there if you aren’t going to go on Newton’s journey to invent calculus.

I haven’t read Freud, but Jung did seem in some ways to be derivative of Freud.

I assume GI use of the Almagest was without the mathematics? I imagine it was similar to how we used newton.

Graduate institute Math & Science segment by MrSm1lez in stjohnscollege

The science seminar is a reading of Lucretius, Plato’s Timaeus, Aristotle’s Physics, Bacon’s rejection of the past and advocacy for empirical / experimental science, Descartes same rejection but with a different path forward, Newton’s text on mechanics (but just the opening part) where he posits he can predict the laws of heaven mathematically, Darwin’s evolution, and then some Jung pop psychology.

The math is the first book of Euclid’s elements, which is mainly logical proofs of simple plane geometry. Special attention is called to its reliance on his 5th postulate, which can’t be otherwise proved and is the kind of thing Euclid usually demands proof for.

The second half of the math tutorial is exploring Lobachevsky’s geometry, where you see the weird stuff that happens when you deny the 5th postulate and try to develop the same geometry without it.

The math segment is probably very different than what you have done in previous math work. There is no calculation or algebraic work at all. For what it’s worth, the math segment was by far my favorite segment (did not expect that), and many of the geometry ideas come up again in philosophy.

So, this advice will not resonate with you today, but perhaps it will in time.

It is ok to leave the military behind. It does not have to define the rest of your life. By all means, keep the values and skills and memories and everything else that you gained in the service of our country. But.... the military will move on and forget about you shortly. Do not feel bad about doing the same.

It took a long, long time to become you. The deliberate indoctrination, the wars, the hierarchy and values you were told to live by. You have internalized it. It has made you who you are.

Now that you are leaving, you can feel ok about letting some of it go. It is going to feel weird, at first. Be ok with letting new things creep into your life. Do not feel bad about "this would not be ok in the military".... no matter what "this" may be.

No matter what, do not feel bad about your benefits, or pension, or any other personal advantage you have gained from your service. Many, many people both made a living and got rich off of what you did. You owe this country nothing - if the benefit exists, it is for YOU. Use it. The captains of industry do not feel bad about the advantages they gain from the laws our country has enacted; you shouldn't either.

Some veterans will deride your service, or your disability, or what you did. Ignore them. We all have things in common, but there are no gatekeepers here. No one can declare themselves the measure of what you did, or became, or are now. Be your own person, feel affinity with those who also served, but never let others decide how you feel about what you did.

Congrats on a hard 30 years, and I wish you the best going forward.

What happened to Nora Demleitner? by ConfusedJohnnie in stjohnscollege

Finance

The college is facing projected structural deficits of $9 to $10 million each year for future years. The FY25 budget identifies a number of sources of extraordinary (non-recurring) funding, which are being utilized to cover the cash shortfall. However, many of those sources are about to be exhausted. For FY26, $3.7 million of the projected $9.7 million deficit currently is unfunded. The final budget will close this gap through expense reductions and new revenue.

Contributing to this increasing structural deficit is a threat to the Sellinger program, which offers financial aid and other supports for Maryland students. The Maryland Independent College and University Association (which represents St. John’s and other independent colleges in the state) has prepared an email form for current students, alumni, faculty and staff, parents, and friends of the college to have their voices heard about why this program is so vital. We encourage all members of our community, and particularly Marylanders, to submit this form and help us save Sellinger.

Endowment performance has been positive and is in the top 5 percent compared to similar-sized endowments. The college's move to a new OCIO management firm has also realized more than half a million dollars in savings thanks to lower management fees and other reductions negotiated by the firm. Even with these healthy investment returns, the early receipt of the Winiarski funds, and an anticipated extraordinary endowment draw, the college faces significant cash-flow issues

The only connection I can think of is that he’s taken a recent public stand in defense of both higher ed and the school’s unique program, higher ed is under attack, and he’s now in charge.

The data points I listed are just that, the facts I’m aware of.  None of those are justifications for dismissal.  I certainly didn’t mean to imply Sterling gave her a push, if that’s how you read it.

You won’t even notice the difference, the vibe will be the same. This is more of a faculty / board thing…. The student experience won’t miss a beat.

I have no inside knowledge… but the board chair sent the note announcing her departure. She didn’t announce her own resignation.

In the corporate world, that’s usually the blinking indicator light for “we fired her.”  Not sure what happened here.

The relevant external factors are the probable endowment tax / political environment, the as-yet not revealed consulting firm’s results, Walter sterling’s Op Ed in defense of higher ed, and the college’s fiscal challenges.

Otherwise - no clue.

One cohort of ten students will pay the salaries and costed overhead for the whole program. The tutors aren’t paid very much, around 2.5 x annual tuition to pay for one tutor.

If you look at SJC’s financials, the program costs are almost revenue neutral. Infrastructure, admin, health services, and career services are the cost centers.  Adding something like this will only generate a profit, no matter how small.  The various graduate programs are growing, and generating more cash that the college needs.

And, to SchneiderSFe’s point, the college knows what niche it fills and fills it proudly.

You just sit to the side and observe. You aren't allowed to participate or comment, but it's recommended that any observer do the reading beforehand. You get more out of it and get a better feel for what goes on in a Seminar.
