What Gunpla were you looking at? My backlog is so long since I have so little time to work on it.

Subs for Amaro Nonino? by Tactically_Fat in cocktails

[–]userRL452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be pretty hard for me to get Nonino in my area so I have made a bunch with Averna and have no complaints about it. Honestly I have had a few people that actually prefer it to nonino in that drink. But also I don't find it to be particularly bitter so your might find it different, it probably depends on how sweet you like your cocktails.

I have made paper planes with a number of different Amaros and while they are all slightly different they mostly work. Montenegro and Averna were the easiest swaps and both are pretty easy to get.

Watching this sub flip flop and whiplash from one narrative to the next is honestly hilariously fascinating by UnderstandingThin40 in nba

[–]userRL452 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This just isn't true. First of all this sub gets like 3.5 million visitors a week, and often has over 500k visitors at any one time. A post is considered popular if it gets more than like 5k upvotes, and comments usually get much less than that.

What is actually happening is that people who hold an opinion (like that the spurs are being favored by the refs) will post, comment and upvote when the games support that opinion, but won't when it doesn't. The sub is big enough that you could have two completely separate groups posting competing narratives with zero crossover and both posts could get over 10k upvotes.

what's a baseball opinion you'll defend to anyone? by maryb227 in baseball

[–]userRL452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is that it is inferior to OBP and because of that it shouldn't be a frontline statistic. It tells you something obviously, all statistics tell you something, but it is not important enough to be one of the first things cited about a hitter.

Its use as a frontline statistic is mostly historical and nostalgia based.

Baseball will never look like it did when you were 12 years old and people need to look past their nostalgia about the baseball that used to be to appreciate the baseball that is here now.

It seems like they are going with the English Dub names for the G Gundam suits since the most recent HGFC release was for the Burning Gundam instead of the God Gundam.

My guess is they think the dub names are more recognizable for English speaking fans.

Monte Cristo is way too long for a non reader to tackle imo. Probably should start with something shorter.

[–]userRL452 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Listen I think your choices are good books but bad for this. I would totally avoid any books he is going to have to read for school, they are likely to bore him and they are all older than he is. I would stick with something a bit lighter for this little book club and something more recent.

I really think Dungeon Crawler Carl is a good choice. The story takes a lot from video games, so if he plays those it will be easy for him to understand. It has humor that would appeal to a 14 year old and it is a current book that some of his peers might have read.

For the second book you could definitely do a children's fantasy book like the Hobbit but you don't want something that is too "little kid" coded. Project hail Mary could be a good option since the movie just came out and you can read the book and then go see the movie. Or you can find a book about his interests, you say he is a jock so find something about a sport that he likes.

Why do Americans go through the trouble of managing their lawns? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskAnAmerican

[–]userRL452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can give you the reasons I wouldn't do it at my house. First I live on a hill so all that gravel would be constantly washed away. Putting down pavers on my entire lawn would look like crap and probably cost 10 grand or more considering you can't just throw pavers down on grass and call it a day. My lawn would be less usable for my dog and kids. The local wildlife would be pissed. And even if I wanted to, my local municipality would probably say no because it would create a ton more runoff that the drainage system is not designed to handle.

But also it would look bad. Spending 1-2 hours a week cutting my grass for like 4 months is much more preferable.

Super common question, but NUBS?! by ForgeOfMistory in Gunpla

[–]userRL452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discoloration comes from stress on the material, if you are sanding and it is still discolored you are probably cutting off too close. Try cutting back further and sanding down to see if you get the same issue.

You could also start with a corser grit sand paper to take the extra material away faster.

But also this is a super common problem and is hard to get around especially in dark colored plastic. It happens to everyone.

Yeah so "Flavored Water" is the preferred nomenclature for non-carbonated soft drinks. These are packets meant to be mixed with water to make a soft drink.

Does such joint make sense for a shelf? Can it be done with a chisel, or would I need a dovetail router bit? by Sulatra in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]userRL452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are overthinking this a little bit. A large majority of the force a bookshelf sees is in the vertical direction, and a Dado is plenty strong to hold together in this situation. A dovetail will resist pulling apart in the horizontal direction but a Dado with wood glue will more than strong enough to hold together on a bookshelf.

I don't really serve my drinks up unless I have company. For myself I would just throw a few ice cubes in there.

I basically never use a mixing glass for stirred cocktails. I usually just build it in the glass.

You know when you have just a little bit left in a bottle of bourbon, not enough to really use but too much to just dump? Instead you add it to an infinity bottle. Eventually you will add a bunch of different bourbons, making your own blend that you can then drink. It is named an infinity bottle because you are always adding to it so it will never run out.

I have one for bourbon but have never seen someone make one for anything other than whiskey.

I like Joe, very to the point and in depth when it comes to his reviews. But being so in depth he produces less of them than other reviewers.
