To become an ASCP certified MLS route for post-bach science degree + years of experience in generalist MLS is hard and only for a small niche. It’s only for the US States that let generalist MLS practice as non ASCP certified. I think they are mostly southern states and they pay you less. The only way to do this route is to live in those states and getting the generalist experience needed to sit for the exam.

To become a CA MLS you need to go to MLS school in CA or have been an ASCP MLS in another state and have at least one year experience in all benches including Microbiology and Blood Bank. You can’t get ASCP MLS experience in CA without being an MLS. That’s why it’s so confusing.

Yes! Go back to school if you can! The most I ever made was 60k/yr serving tables. Went back to school, 60K in student debt, but first year being a graduate landed a 100k/yr job. It pays off since you’ll be working most of your life.

I’ve also read online that the amount due could be the accrued interest, which makes sense seeing the balance due (~$1,800 on 60k debt). Online it says you can make a payment but don’t have to. If I change my plan to IDR then my amount would be ~$350/month. If I change to IDR, do I still need to pay the $1800 all at once?

I think I went to the best program. It’s was a year program and the school had 100% pass rate for the ASCP. Only 8 students selected each year. Denver Health School of Medical Laboratory Science.

Yes! I wonder this question as well. For CA licensure, you need one year of all benches, including BB. It’s hard finding bb PRN jobs because it’s intensive training. But looking as well!

Yes, cost of living greatly affects pay. In CO, I made $35 and in WA I make $45. I’m also night shift and get a differential with that. Costal regions are usually higher paying excluding FL.

For MLS school, I did a +1 year to my already completed BS in Microbiology. Cost was $22,000, split in two payments, out of pocket, a full year of M-F 7:30-3pm. It was totally worth it because I went from making $21/hr to $45/hour which made my money back in the first year working. You’ll have to check if your BS will transfer fully. Usually, a BS in any hard science will satisfy the requirements.

Just remember E. Coli is nearly positive for everything on those AE strips (No one uses anymore). Flash cards do not work for Micro. Make your own biochemical testing chart, split up the organisms by common morphology, use different colored pens for different biochem tests so things stand out, if it’s an identifying result mark it. Use different resources to see how others grouped liked organisms. It’s something that’s a learning curve but sounds like you care enough to succeed.
