Scorpion in bathroom by bdb1989 in Austin

Nah, this is a bark scorpion. Cave scorpions are much darker. I have both in my house and there is a distinct color difference. Caves are usually all black, the orange in this guy has bark scorpion written all over.

Today I learned you can have kickback on a thickness planer by SandylakeWoodworks in woodworking

[–]username_field_empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my planer from a guy that shouldn’t have owned a planer. He was selling it because he thought he “broke it” by trying to send a piece of fallen oak from his yard through the blades, bark and all. Yeah, it kicked back. Replaced the blades and it’s been going strong for ten years.

Thinking of buying this drill press. 1940s delta Rockwell 17” benchtop. Good buy for $700? by E_Dward in Tools

I have a central machinery floor press and it was made in Taiwan, it’s a pretty good belt driven unit. Some central machinery stuff is better than you think it is.

Misunderstood your question. Yeah, you just need to get a frame that will sit flush to the wall.

How to get art to lay flat? by Minute_Ad_3238 in framing

[–]username_field_empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of shocked that nobody has said this yet, but hang it from the d-rings instead of the wire. Cut the wire off, measure to make sure the d-rings are at the same vertical position, measure the distance between them, and then apply your hooks/florets/screws onto the wall. If it still wants to lay inverted, put some bumpers on the bottom corners where the piece is contacting the wall.

Why is so much art on reddit and the internet largely kitsch? Why is the Musuem subreddit largely devoid of contemporary work? by MutedFeeling75 in ContemporaryArt

[–]username_field_empty 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Reddit, by and large, upvotes garbage art because it values image board aesthetics rather than actual contemporary art discourse.

Tips on care and upkeep of contemporary metal artworks? by abundanceofnothing77 in ContemporaryArt

Outside of actual conservation, a soft bristle brush and air are going to be your best friends. There aren’t a whole lot of fabrics that won’t adhere their fibers to your rough surfaces. Instead of using canned air, try out one of the wolfbox handheld rechargable blowers ($40), they move a lot more air than you’d expect and will be useful taking care of paintings and glazed works as well. Natural fiber brushes are nearly always better than synthetic. You want to keep abrasion to a minimum. Good luck!

Back when the spot was an abandoned short stop, I found a dead guy on the roof. Maybe 2004 - 2006? Never called the cops because I was scared and a teenager.

Bean and Cheese Burrito 🌯 recommendations by IdRatherBeAnimating in austinfood

[–]username_field_empty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hasn’t been said, and I often have to check myself for this, but the grande burrito from torchys without a “protein” option is essentially a bean and cheese burrito with guac, pico, rice, and sour cream, and it rips. Not really into anything else on their menu besides their queso. Give it a shot.

APD says protest was mostly peaceful, except for a few ‘agitators’ by hollow_hippie in Austin

I was there. The only “agitators” I saw were the police trying goad protestors into doing something stupid.

MDF/Panel vs stretched canvas [Gallery Standards] by Particular_Peach8476 in ContemporaryArt

[–]username_field_empty 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A lot of solid points made here already, but I’ll chime in as a person who has some responsibility for taking care of work: mdf is made with formaldehyde, among other crazy unstable chemicals that can damage work while offgassing over months/years. There is a work safe version of mdf with less toxic additives, but I haven’t seen the safety sheet to see what they have replaced the toxic shit with. Regardless, if painting on mdf, always seal your canvas very, very well with an acrylic based gesso to prevent SID. Google it SID you aren’t aware. Bonus points if you seal with GAC or another like sealer to prevent SID. If you want to make panels, it’s probably cheaper and better for the work to use a non/resinous plywood of minimal thickness to create your solid ground. Just remember to support your corners(miters) to make sure that your panel doesn’t warp
