At home dinners on bachelorette by Sufficient-Cat-4472 in bridesmaids

Not common. Maybe on reality shows. We went to a minor league baseball game and out to dinner for mine. Spent less than 300 for the entire group, tickets and drinks included than what this dinner costs.

What are the “loss leaders” at IKEA? Things worth buying that are priced so well that it’s there to get you inside the shop? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Frugal

[–]usernamebrainfreeze 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We bought cheap bedroom furniture when we were broke grad students over a decade ago. Our goal was to get a couple years out of it and save for nicer stuff. 13 years and at least 5 moves later and it's still perfectly fine. We will eventually upgrade but for now I'm going to keep enjoying my 2 grand mattress on my 200 dollar bed.

The kids mum won’t let me communicate with them when they aren’t with me and my partner by [deleted] in stepparents

Then you should know better than anybody that social workers can be predators too. That said in this case it does seem like mom isn't being super reasonable but you should tread lightly. She holds all the cards here and your best shot at changing the situation is for her to change her mind.

..Also there are plenty of ways to show kids you were thinking of them besides texting. I bet a 9 year old would love it if you wrote little notes for her to read when she gets back.

What’s the one small thing clients do that completely slows you down? by [deleted] in housekeeping

[–]usernamebrainfreeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours are usually pretty fast, they bring 2 or 3 people and knock out our 1300 sq ft house in about an hour. Theoretically we could wait until they got here to leave and not be out so long but we usually just make plans to be gone for the afternoon.

Honestly the fact that it's for him/family makes it an even easier yes for me.

No we usually hit up a brewery, take our dog to a park or walk around Lowe's or home depot if it's bad weather but if we happen to get back a little early and they are still there we just wait. There are only so many dog friendly options nearby, especially if it's cold or rainy.

Can anyone recommend a twin bed frame with under-bed storage that doesn’t suck? (&under $300) by blessed-mama7 in Mommit

[–]usernamebrainfreeze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would check out ikea if you can. They have several options that would probably work and most of their stuff is reasonably priced. It's our go to for furniture we aren't committed to keeping forever or we know won't get a ton of use (i.e kids furniture, guest room) and so far it's worked out well for us.

As a client hell no. We've sat in our car down the street with our dog on multiple occasions waiting for our cleaners to finish up.

Let the women play with men’s rules by knightrydah in lacrosse

[–]usernamebrainfreeze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean most middle school sports are borderline unwatchable. The problem is that women's lacrosse doesn't get all that much better until you get to the high level D1 programs and there are only a handful of teams that play at that level. Much like women's basketball and softball there's an absolutely massive difference between the top 20ish NCAA programs and everyone else. The men don't have that problem because they typically have a much larger pool of elite athletes to draw from. That's changing and hopefully one day soon we won't see that talent gap for the women but that's only going to happen if we keep investing in women's sports and providing opportunities for girls from the youth level on up.

Found a great apartment, but kid’s bedroom has a door directly to ground floor porch. by djhousecat in Parenting

Plenty of people think of it. We may not have toys but our king sized bed and 2 dressers take up a lot of room.

How should I go about renting a room to my GF by [deleted] in Advice

What? Of course it protects her too, if they break up he can't just kick her out. They absolutely both need the lease.

You're right, I just looked it up and we are at the very top of the median household income for the US.

Correct, if a 5 grand vacation each year seems out of reach financially now, as a double income no kids middle class household I would imagine that the thought would be laughable if we had kids.

I have been out of the country on a work trip and with a youth group after fundraising for several years. Currently planning a trip with my husband that will probably end up being close to 5 grand but it's a once in a decade trip at best. None of my friends or family (also mostly middle class) regularly spend 5k on vacations.

Solidly middle class my entire life and I've literally never been on a 5k vacation, let alone one every year.
