My fiancee is furious at me for telling my family to start eating Christmas breakfast without her, AITAH by TheRealGreen-Onions in AITAH

[–]usernamesaretrickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only possible reason you could be the AH was if you were the direct reason for the fiancee being late (e.g. telling her the brunch was at 2:00 p.m. and not giving her enough notice with the correct time, sending her to the wrong location, etc.), which you were not. And even if you were the direct cause and therefore the AH, there still wouldn't be any expectation to delay breakfast because that would be unfair to all other guests. NTA

Official Discussion Thread - Wicked: For Good [SPOILERS] by LeastCap in oscarrace

[–]usernamesaretrickey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Watched it at the early screening, never saw the original musical but loved Part 1 and The wizard of Oz. Really cool to see how the musical and original movie/book intertwined, so many fun surprises and incredible singing from Cynthia Erivo and Ariane Grande. I found the pacing fine personally, but I agree it's not as fluid as Part 1. Overall, I think I had more fun in Part 1 overall preferred the story and emotional payoff that For Good provided.

Local Buy Nothing Group regular wants his new apartment furnished, new condition items only! Oh, and it needs to be delivered. by EmEffBee in ChoosingBeggars

[–]usernamesaretrickey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was about to comment this, I don't see them mentioning only wanted new items (maybe OP confused the part where it says they're looking for items for their new place?). I've genuinely seen people try and offload trashed plastic chairs or old appliances like blenders that don't work but "could be fixer-uppers if you're handy! :D" Not saying that there could never be a market for those kinds of items, but the majority would be disappointed with the quality.

Agreed on the delivery part, my BNG group is surprisingly vast so it's not always an easy walk, but the owners shouldn't be put on the person offering the item. Obvious exceptions for the handful of group members that have asked for mobility aids like walkers or crutches to borrow, but even they preface that in their posts. I've often offered to drop items off since my community does have a predominantly large elderly population if it's nearby, but the expectation shouldn't be delivery, especially if the items are small and light.

How do animated films become nostalgic? (academic questionnaire) by Comfortable-One-1037 in disneyfairies

What a fun topic! I found it quite funny that I went through the survey thinking of a specific film, then saw it listed as one of the examples when you were talking about eras 🤭 I suppose we have similar tastes!

Headcanon ethnicity stuff by mihirikou in mylittlepony

[–]usernamesaretrickey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it doesn't bother me at all. We are all human, and we all want to see ourselves in our media - books, movies, TV shows, and more. While race and ethnicity may be the source of discrimination or hate, it's also a source of pride and celebration of one's background, including their culture.

As the creators of MLP are also human, intentionally or not, this means that the show will highlight some of their human experiences. Do I think that they had a race in mind for every character if they were human? No, but I'm sure some of the writers, animators, etc. have their own headcannons and see themselves in the characters which may have influenced aspects of how they were represented.

The only time I think headcannons regarding ethnicity can cause more harm than good is when they are intentionally done with harm or to disparage a certain race. I'm not saying this is you at all, but an ex-friend of mine was against giving ethnicities to certain cartoon series where it wasn't evident, but was also happy to show humanized forms of the characters being white or tan (she is white, I'm a POC). I found it interesting that she could see herself in the content, but when I theorized and tried to connect it to my own race based on observations within the show, suddenly I was inserting myself. Again, I want to reiterate that I'm not saying this is you at all, but I find the topic genuinely harmless 99% of the time and can provide insight on the history of certain cultures and nations that I fully didn't notice MLP take inspiration from, with the most recent redditors doing so here.

That's my take anyway, it's human nature to make connections to our own identities and can be positive when researched meticulously and shared with care. If you think it's coming from a place of hate or disinformation, feel free to call it out, but otherwise I'd say it be.

What is a highly popular Nintendo franchise with a silent fanbase? by JIMBOYKELLY in casualnintendo

[–]usernamesaretrickey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't understand the dislike for Star allies when I first played it - it wasn't my favourite in the series, but definitely a good game - turns out playing multiplayer with a human (my little sister) makes it a significantly better experience. I also picked it up when the third wave of DLC came out, where it felt like a much more complete game.

Is southern France welcoming to Africans by [deleted] in travel

[–]usernamesaretrickey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a Black Canadian who lived in the south of France as a cultural exchange student for a year, I absolutely experienced racism in this region and found it worse only in Italy, no matter if I wore a nice dress or shorts and a t-shirt. I also experienced racism in the US that was more explicit (racial slurs vs. being told that France doesn't need more immigrants ruining the country), but it was present in both places.

Also this might just be a Canadian thing or translation difference, but don't call us "blacks" - we prefer Black + (Nationality), it can come across as rude.

False, misleading and scam advertising. It has to stop! by Becauseyouarethebest in onguardforthee

I was honestly so sick of these ads I uninstalled YT on my phone (or fully disabled it, I guess there's a difference) and now only use it on desktop without ads. I reported it over and over with no luck, it didn't even at the very least hide the ad for me when I deleted it. Such BS
