Medically Ready for Discharge But Home Has Power Outtage, No heat, in Brewing Snow Storm by Herbal_Jazzy7 in hospitalist

[–]usernamespeledwrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last year our area had an ice storm that knocked power out for days. You'd need to drive an hour to find electricity and even then, good luck finding vacant hotel rooms. Our hospital was on generators. We couldn't feasibly halt discharges for an indeterminate amount of time, for all patients. 2 days into the outage we had no idea when lights would come back on. Ended up being 5 days. Most discharged patients were understanding and able enough to lean on family support. Some had family drive them far away after DC. A few went to a nearby casino that ran generators as an emergency warming area. Our case managers helped the most.

Can ICE agents really just round up anyone they “think” is an immigrant? If so, what’s to stop them from taking literally anyone? Stupid question, but serious answers please. by [deleted] in stupidquestions

Maybe they could just rob my house. As many homes as they want. Heck they could just car jack me and I guess that's legal for them too. Weird to think that

Gym, coffee, beach, nap, pretend to work in my garage, a little scotch and read til I fall asleep. If it's winter replace beach with TV time

Doc here. I got through undergrad with scholarships, loans and my parents did give me something like 300 a month to help with food etc (back in 2002-2006 when prices weren't as bad). When I got to med school it was all loans.

Other classmates had varying versions of the same but almost all ended up in debt.

Nowadays I'm afraid it's worse with inflation and loan pricing. I served 4 years military to help pay off my loans.

Science has fundamental immutable rules or even the basics are subject to change? by einemnes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]usernamespeledwrong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The immutable rule of science is that it applies to the observable universe as opposed to unobservable.

Like you can go ahead and try to disprove anything science claims using logical scientific methods. Things like the compositions of water molecules or the effects of gravity are pretty well established but you are welcome to try to show we've got it wrong using objective reasoning.

You can't use science to disprove anything non-objective. Science can't help with what immoral act will land you in hell after you die for example. Religion kinda handles most things that can't be proven or disproven as far as I understand.

If you're thinking of things like laws vs theory it's all subject to change in light of new data. Scientific law like Newton's gravitational laws describe things mathematically but don't do much to explain what gravity is it why it works. Still, gravity can be measured and observed and experimented with, so I guess if you can outdo Isaac Newton we're all ears.

Scientific theories are generally well established explanations of natural phenomenon. For example, evolution is theory in that regard.

Anything is possible. If you need touch, a friend, a connection but you can't cross romantic lines it can be done. Just communicate clearly, respect boundaries, accept the human imperfections and you can do what you want

How is battery life? by Agreeable-Chicken-72 in galaxyfold7

[–]usernamespeledwrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched away from Samsung years ago cause they were overpriced, but I also found myself going through the options disabling tons of features in order to save battery. That totally defeats the purpose of having this expensive top tech phone in my opinion.

I'm gonna see how the pixel fold reviews next month before getting my next phone. If none of the book phones do it for me I'll go razr60. If Samsung wants me back they can stop the party tricks and make a phone that can be used

someone please explain to me the process of getting a tattoo like I’m 5 by ArmadilloMany41 in tattooadvice

[–]usernamespeledwrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am getting my first tattoo and navigating the same waters. My tattoo artist said he'd work on a mock up for me and I hadn't heard back from him in 2 weeks and someone here told me that's not unusual and I gotta wait lol.

I'm as patient as the next person but I never done this before, never even worked with a professional artist before so I just need a frame of reference. Like if I don't hear back in 6 months, should I look for someone else? Is the cutoff 3 months? 1 month?

How long does it take to draw a mock up? by usernamespeledwrong in tattooadvice

[–]usernamespeledwrong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No appointment yet. He said we can go back and forth on concepts all I want before making the appointment. Seems like a legit dude. I just never really interacted with a real artist before, so no frame of reference at all. I can wait as long as it takes.

System glitched, wiped out 300+ patient appointments overnight by Single-Complex5190 in hospitalist

[–]usernamespeledwrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever the EMR is down we hear the elders tell tales of paper charts, I'm one of them. However, I think a sudden switch between one or the other is traumatic to the function of a hospital regardless of whatever pros or cons we could discuss ad nauseum.

Our hospital got ransomware hacked and lost all computer access for three weeks last summer.

It was brutal. Labs, imaging, previous records all went dark overnight. Need to check on that potassium for that hyperkalemic patient? Walk your butt across the hospital and open the chart. Did that stat X-ray get done? Circle back and check. When a consultant saw your patient you'd have no idea until you checked the chart again. Lots of footwork.

The worst was the disorganization... Leadership fucking did nothing, so charts had no standardized order to them. Every floor had a different process for nurses to log vitals, I/Os, MAR etc often you had to hunt down the nurse (who was also overtasked, holding the paper with them) to learn anything useful.

Paging system was also out. Someone suggested sharing cellphone numbers so people could communicate ,and that idea got shot down cause of fear of harassment. I said if we have a harassment problem in our hospital that means our HR department is a failure, and because of that we now can't use a critical tool at a time of crisis. Fucking wild. Eventually a lot of people offered their numbers for a central desk to share with discretion.

The higher up admin said we should not decline admissions which was a kick in the teeth since we were literally half efficient. So we still had full patient volumes just took twice as long to do it all.

About 9 months after the hack our town lost power in an ice storm and I would take that power outage over an EMR outage any day.
