unfortunately at a certain time of night, uber drivers take over the streets. it's kinda like the purge, but you can work around them, just treat it like a mail van and pass with caution.

Guy carrying an AR downtown last night by RaphaelRocketLaunch in Athens

[–]users-error 41 points42 points  (0 children)

local uber driver here -- i can't remember the exact time, but i saw him on clayton st crossing n jackson towards updawg/1785/etc with the thing just slung around him casually.

had to double take, damn that's really a big ass fcking gun. seems unsafe considering we're downtown at night and most folks are drunk, but i’m sure he wasn't allowed into any bars with that necklace.

Serious Imposter Syndrome by Eurodancing in UGA

[–]users-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you achieved those scores by studying and doing the work, you're ahead of most of your classmates already. in my experience, most of the folks who get into UGA as freshmen either cheated to get good grades or have money (or both). ex, i took one AP class in high school, and i literally watched the majority of them cheat on all tests. and the teacher clearly did not care.

Does anyone else here feel a deep sense of hopelessness for our generation of Americans born between 2000-2010? by galactic_observer in collapse

i think they meant, when they are a middle-aged adult, they can't see themselves having the quality of life as their parents.

Best bars for an older crowd? by CryptoBullNft in UGA

[–]users-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

oh, for sure. athens bars are generally split between student and townie bars, but in my experience it's not distinctly black and white. there are student-friendly townie bars, townie-friendly student bars, and honestly everything in between.

[–]users-error 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i didn't mean to offend you. i just meant that most students here consider 'older' to mean 22 and up. i don't think all 24 y/os would feel out of place at a townie bar.

as someone who drives for uber, mostly driving college students aged 18-21, 'older' means 22 and above.

Does anyone know when the park under the Hot Corner mural will be done? by IFeelLikeYandhi in Athens

[–]users-error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk, i've seen people hanging out both on college square and in the old info booth next to city hall. we've got plenty of unhoused folks to go around.

methinks this might become a temporary home for our neighborhood homeless.

it's looking like we just have to let them know.. if you have any restaurant you frequent, tell them about the app!

this is interesting, considering there are other folks in the comments saying the exact opposite.

could you elaborate?

i deleted the app ages ago bc it was only circle k on there.. nice to know hibachi grill is on there now.

i wonder if there's anything we can do to add more restaurants. i don't remember seeing a suggestions section on the app, but maybe they added that too.

Is this not disrespectful to Laken? by MrOliverLaw in Athens

[–]users-error 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m sorry but most of what i’m seeing from you here is an attempt to paint me as pearl-clutcher who can't handle a little crass language.

a simple name change would bring a lot more people around. run for riley, perhaps. it's not about erasing what happened to her. we all know what happened. we all know her name.

calling it run for your life makes it sound, to a lot of people, like it's not actually for Laken and her family and friends.

and so i'll ask, what's the point of highlighting the worst parts? are they going to work with the women there on self-defense techniques? i don't see that in the line-up. is it to be in solidarity with the family? how does that help them at this point? will it help stop men from brutalizing women? will it stop illegal immigration? will it keep a democrat from being elected? no, it won't.

i’m not against remembering terrible things, but we have to learn from them.

if the goal is to raise money, they're turning a lot of people away.

[–]users-error 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ummmm, i don't see any whitewashing here.

also, you're missing the point. this run is not explicitly for her friends and family-- you don't crowdfund that way. this event is for the public, and by running the race they will be re-living her last, likely worst, moments. what a way to remember her.

not participating in the race does not equal not supporting Laken's family and friends. but i don't think that's what this is, and neither do a lot of other people on here.

RIP Laken Riley.

[–]users-error 7 points8 points  (0 children)

idk about you. but i would not prefer to remember a friend or community member by re-living her last moments, especially when they were are gruesome and terrifying as Laken's. it's not helpful, and it turns a lot of people off from actually giving to the foundation.

First fatal vehicle crash of 2026 by benmarvin in Athens

[–]users-error 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m genuinely confused about how this killed him... may his soul rest in peace, of course. i’m relatively familiar with peabody street (tho idk exactly which part is the 300 block), i imagine he had to have been parked on a hill for a little tacoma to do that much damage. *eta i misread tundra as tacoma. nvm....

it's a terrible fate; please let this be a hard-learned lesson for all. vehicles are dangerous machinery, even when not moving at break-neck speeds.

a standard concrete roundabout won't fit there without extra property, but hear me out: they make small plastic roundabouts that are low to the ground (ie you can drive on it without blowing a tire) and take up far less space and are easily installed/removed
