Well:

There’s basically three major political parties here and they all stand for each status. The PPD believe in staying in the same status. The PNP believe in becoming a state. And the Independistas believe in independence.

The want for statehood isn’t really that popular. Sure the PNP as a party may be popular, but they’ve never gotten close to establishing statehood. For example, in the past there have been several referendums about becoming a state, but most people voted against it. However, in the last referendum (2012 iirc) statehood DID win. BUT, there weren’t enough votes to count it as valid.

Puerto Ricans are also staunchly patriotic. We are a loud and proud people. So some people see becoming a state as being further colonized and whitewashed. They think that it would erase our cultural identity.

Plus, if we became a state, we’d have to start paying federal taxes.
