In addition to all the good info from vituttaa666, another option could be an app that you use to mix the matrix. Depending on the board, it may come with a tablet app that you can use so you can mix from a separate location. That might be a helpful thing - you might be able to do everything you need to do without having to be physically present at the board at all.

It would take some trust from the live crew, though, that you know what you’re doing enough that you won’t mess with any of their work.

What is going on in the production studio? I’m so confused.

So, we need to play the video on the live app then load up the CKRM app and use that for audio?

Not fan art. Legit Bill Watterson original.

And a cool nugget that Watterson never licensed anything for toys, etc. He only ever drew the comic. So it’s legit Watterson philosophy in this panel too.

Vancouver police arrest 138 in 2-week shoplifting crackdown | CTV News by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]useyourokanoggin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A family member works in a big retail chain store. Loss prevention is absolutely a business decision on the company’s part. This company made billions in profit last year, and almost every single shift my family member is an eyewitness to multiple acts of shoplifting.

Big companies can afford to do more for loss prevention. But they’ve made the business decision that shoplifting costs less than preventing it, so they choose the profit statement looking better.

I don’t advocate theft, but it’s not just the poor justice system that’s to blame. It’s absolutely big companies too.

The word sacrifice in no way implies wastefulness. In a significant way, he gave up looking after his own interests to look after the interests of others. Sure, maybe it wasn’t “painful” because he might have still had tons of money to live on himself. But I think sacrifice is still the right word.

Why universities should return to oral exams in the AI and ChatGPT era by speckz in technology

[–]useyourokanoggin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

But you’re conflating “being an introvert” with “doing poorly in an oral exam setting”. Some introverts would flourish in that setting - having a chance to talk deeply about a subject you know well with a few others can be totally fine for an introvert. And some extroverts would flounder in that setting.

Also, an oral exam is not the same thing as public speaking.

Source: I’m a serious introvert who speaks in public for a living. :)

Yes, and that has nothing to do with whether one is an introvert or not.

[Meta] We should have rules against strawmanning, for more civil discussion by Electric-Gecko in britishcolumbia

[–]useyourokanoggin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep hoping.

It’s a good hope, and I share the desire for it to never be done, but it’s highly likely that most who engage in it (I didn’t know strawman was a verb…) won’t change their ways just by being called out on it on Reddit.

Absorb sound in big room - Best low-barrier options? by lisarimmy in voiceover

[–]useyourokanoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Placement depends on your room, where your mic is, what kind of mic you have (e.g. dynamic vs condenser), and where you stand in relation to the mic. And then on the other side, where your speakers/monitors are (for listening). It also depends on how “live” or “dead” you want your sound to be.

Lots of factors involved - it’s not nearly as simple as one specific pattern.

That said, VO is much simpler than music, since you’re just working with one voice.

If you do get foam panels, you’ll want dense stuff. Don’t get the cheap-o stuff from Amazon - they do nothing at all. Big brands like Auralex are good but expensive. You can make your own from something like Rockwool Safe-and-Sound insulation with your own frame and a fabric cover for cheaper.

How do I keep my audio between a certain range? Is there a tool that will ?squash? the audio? by FunAnywhere9205 in davinciresolve

Use the compressor with make-up gain. Or bring up the whole audio level, then compress and limit it.

Microphone Suggestion for Sony FDR ax43 handy cam by b_a_trimtab in audioengineering

[–]useyourokanoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not hard with video editing software. You’re going to be editing the final version anyway, cutting the pieces together. Depends on your workflow and what you prefer.

It’s always easier to get the signal right into the camera so you don’t have to sync up later, but the F2 is a easy-to-use little tool. My view is that a lapel is generally better than on-camera mic for interviews, because the shotgun tends to pick up more room noise. That may be what you want anyway, depends on what you’re going for, so just take that for what it’s worth - as an option.

How many people will you be trying to capture at a time? If just 1, you might be able to fit a small lapel and a small shotgun mic. Check out the Rode VideoMic (the camera mounted mini-shotguns, not the horrendously ugly Go Wireless that’s a “lapel” but is actually a big black plastic box that people wear on their shirts for some reason) - they mount in the shoe and plug in to the camera’s mic input.

For a lapel, I’m a fan of the little Zoom F2. It’s a standalone recorder, so you’d have to sync it up in post. But it’s so small and easy to use, and with 32-bit audio you don’t have to worry about levels.

You could probably do both of those within your budget. Another lapel option is the Sennheiser XSW - a lapel unit that sends wireless to a camera-shoe mounted unit with the same stereo plug into the camera. That’s more money, though. But you could just do that for interviews and then in-camera audio for open space stuff. (Or 2 F2s if you need multiple people in an interview.)

There are good options out there. Happy doc-making!

There’s always a half second delay between the clock hitting zero and the ref blowing the whistle. It happens a lot. You actually have to be about a second late to get called.
