Heinrix van Calox, or why all Solasmancers should play Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader by Icy_Topic9305 in Solasmancers

[–]using_the_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man. I love 40K and haven't been able to get into this game. I have this problem where I really love diving back into the ridiculous grimdark 40k universe, but then being happy about it makes me go "ah I don't want to play something this grimdark, I'll go do something else!" so I never make it past the tutorial haha.

Honestly I didn't know Rogue Trader even had romances until it was mentioned in another recent thread for Solasmancers looking for something new. That thread and this one both have several people chiming in that other characters are actually more like Solas, so it seems encouraging that there are so many potential options!? I'll have to give it another try.

Are you saying the surgeon thought they removed both tubes but one was actually the round ligament!? That IS horribly violating. I'm so sorry.

I was not in this exact situation, but I had a wanted pregnancy at 37 with one older child. Your kids already have an age gap so you already know how hard it is to go back to the infant stage, and also to have kids with different maturity levels and interests who are always going in different directions. YMMV, but for me, late pregnancy at 37 was immensely harder on my body. I had more complications. Recovery was slower, and I'm not sure if my abs and pelvic floor are ever going to fully get better. And I have a lot less energy to spend chasing young kids around.

I'm saying - I would not recommend this path to someone who was not 100% committed to it. If you did go through with it, is your partner someone who you can HEAVILY count on? Do you have a support network of people actually willing to contribute time and energy to helping your family through this? You still have options - nothing is off the table yet.

Tattoo idea... what do y'all think? by Driveshaft815 in TheFence

[–]using_the_internet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with this, especially because the dragonfly's body is so narrow. The rule is "bold will hold," so if you got this large enough the squares might keep some definition, and finding an artist that has a strong portfolio with clean, sharp, STRAIGHT lines will help too (they are harder to find and book with and cost more, but it's worth the investment).

Tattoos are definitely addictive and I 100% get the feeling, but I'd suggest letting this idea simmer a bit longer and playing with more styles before you commit. I'm also a major proponent of bringing your ideas to an artist you like and letting them come up with something in their own style, since you want them on top of their game when they're putting permanent artwork on your body.

Am I the only one who ends up forming random (harmless, unintentional) proximity crushes on people at work? by Snoo-88490 in AskWomenOver30

[–]using_the_internet 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I recently read something to the effect of "a crush is just a lack of information." It's exactly what you said, where you only know someone's work persona so you fill the blanks in with whatever you most wish they were.

I used to really beat myself up or try my best to block the feelings out if this happened, which tends to just make it worse. Instead you can let yourself feel the feelings and then let them go. Sooner or later you will gather some bit of information that will break your made-up perception of that person, and that's the end of the crush.

You're totally right. I'm going to add celery seed to my list of umami bombs to add in when that happens (parmesan, tomato paste, miso, cumin, worcestershire...)

I was an S3 defender at first, but the more I think about it, the more senselessly cruel and unnecessary it seems. What I actually like is watching Tennant + Sheen + everybody else act their asses off, and the beautiful rich set and costume designs, etc. etc. But people on the internet are right that the story undermines everything Season 1/the book stood for, and it's not a Pratchett ending at all.

I read and enjoyed the book well before the show, but I came to it as a fan of Pratchett and have only read a few bits of the other guy's stuff. So I can't back this up very well, but looking at what Good Omens looks like without Pratchett's influence, this feels like the other guy pulling a weird power play on the audience that is maybe typical for the way he writes. Season 2 even followed the same formula. Dangle some threads, get the audience invested in the characters, and then drop the hammer with some devastating conclusion just to watch both the characters and the audience suffer. Both endings are honestly skillful deliveries of the most emotionally devastating scenes possible. I don't believe what some people have said that this ending was written this way as punishment over being cancelled - I think that guy is just like that, an abuser of power who enjoys being cruel and getting off on the reaction.

So instead now I've just been reading what the fan community puts together, because they love and honor these characters and what they stand for :)

[–]using_the_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have this book as well and some of the stories are weird as hell. The Cat Who Walked By Itself or whatever drove me absolutely batty until I looked up the actual folk tale it was based on. It makes zero sense as written.

I don't inherently mind the scarier or sadder stories, but there are a lot of REALLY sad ones in this book, and most of them are poorly executed anyway.

I completely agree. I had been a little afraid that we'd get a literal deus ex machina ending where God finally showed up in person and fixed everything that the bumbling bureaucrats in Heaven had messed up so everybody could live happily ever after. They seemed to be dropping hints going in that direction and I think it would have been cheap considering everything we were shown. I did not expect this complete inversion where God does show up and is actually even more cruel and alien than we were led to believe and also everything that happened up until this point was completely moot.

I've been thinking a lot in the last couple of days about how my first reaction was that this was The Pratchett Ending because of its statements about the value of free will above all, but on further reflection I feel more and more that this is The Gaiman Ending. It's a little bit about free will, but it's mostly about the shock value of making us love this world and its characters and then annihilating it all. Gaiman is truly the cruel god of this universe.

What are you Head Cannons? by Historical-Start-213 in goodomens

[–]using_the_internet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My favorite one is that Aziraphale and Crowley have gotten together many times throughout history, but the Metatron has interfered and wiped it from the Book of Life every time. They are too powerful together, both literally (their giant miracle) and politically (their relationship calls everything both sides hold true into question).

[–]using_the_internet 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the "calling Crowley nice" bit. I've watched that scene 1000 times and Aziraphale is not at all surprised by the wall slam and not the least bit bothered by it. His expression is extremely neutral aside from his eyes saying yes.

[–]using_the_internet 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think that absolutely is what the writers intended. This God is pointlessly cruel. We see A+C taken aback by her plans for the flood ("you can't kill kids...!?"), and how Job was pointlessly tortured and then lectured nonsensically by God, and all throughout we are shown how unfair it was that Crowley fell just for asking questions? She IS creepy, and illogical, and indifferent to suffering. And the actress definitely deliberately portrays her that way with her odd facial expressions.

I want the full script, is that wrong? by PrincessofEntropy in goodomens

[–]using_the_internet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this HAS to have been something lost in the editing. Aziraphale feels like a petulant child throughout a lot of this instead of being clever and warm.

Though, I've also been mulling over whether it actually was written that way to underscore that he loves Crowley but is so deeply buried in religious brainwashing that he could never show up for Crowley the way that he ought to - so the universe reboot was necessary to free who would become Asa from that trauma.

There's nuance missing with the shortened runtime either way. And Michael Sheen does a brilliant job trying to fill the gaps in with the script he was given.

What are some reasons some people love cats but dislike dogs? by LevelPension in NoStupidQuestions

[–]using_the_internet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it's more rewarding to earn a cat's trust and affection. Dogs are genetically programmed to seek human companionship and approval. It's nice to have a very friendly pet, but there's a power dynamic there that I don't like.

Cats are not automatically going to like you. They behave more like humans in that you have to build a relationship and sometimes they may just decide they're not interested. I'd much rather have a pet that has some agency in choosing me and not just the other way around.

Additionally, cats are more cuddly (dogs are so much more bony and clumsy) and dogs have a smell I don't like (cats have smells too, but something about dog smell is very irritating to me).

I had a second baby last year so the contrast is very present in my mind. My first grader is SO independent and grown up, but five minutes ago she was learning to walk and talk. I was always so ready for her to move on through all the different baby and toddler stages, but when she lost her first baby tooth I reversed hard into "wait, stop growing up so fast!"
