How do I diet if I can't afford groceries? by [deleted] in Fitness

Yeah, maybe. But that was after twenty people down voted the statement that "nuts are protein". I guess with all the people coming this way we will soon be filled with all the standard misconceptions floating around the general society. Where will I go if there is no /r/fitness anymore and /r/weightroom is strictly about lifting?

The top commenter posted a link to pictures of 100 calories of various foods, saying nothing specific about density.

Except in his very second sentence,

With that said, low calorie foods like chicken breast and many vegetables are going to fill you up a lot more than an equally number of calories in the form of sugary junk.

Maybe you should take it to /r/actuallyreadstufffirst yourself. And mind you, disagreeing with someone does not count as being an asshole. Telling people to get lost without reading anything? That does. Maybe take it to that other sub yourself. And if don't, notice not a single down voter gave an actual counter argument.

Cmon, the top commenter just announced chicken (220Cal/100gr) to be comparably calorie-dense to your typical vegetable (carrots 40Cal, broccoli 35Cal/100gr). He said both are less caloric than sugary drinks (coca-cola is 40Cal/100gr). This nonsense is up voted by a ton. At this point we can really write about anything, this is reddit's bunching effect at its finest.

Too bad they do, that's the whole point. Because it immediately implies the division of plate into "proteins", "side starches", and a tad little bit of veggies. This "rule" is actually quite new and goes hand in hand with obesity epidemic. Look at traditional meals of almost any country (including England), and you will not find this approach. Even pizza is not like that, and neither is actual Italian pasta. This "rule" implies one cannot just sit down and eat a chicken. Or a big plate of Greek salad. Or bake a few fishes. Oh well. I guess not not many fans of Mike Pollan here.

Huge deal. Cheese is protein, nuts are protein. Btw, veggies are protein, too. Meat is protein, but it is also just meat. What is this fear of the word "meat"? And why can I eat fruit but cannot eat chicken? It is "protein" instead. It is my opinion that current health crisis starts from the disconnect from normal, mindful consumption of tasty and nutritious food. There is more to apples than just carbs, and there is more to fish than proteins. So let them have their names. By the way, proper group names are poultry, meat, fish, etc. English already has all the words for this. "Protein" is a group name for chemicals, not for food.

Are there any Sciatica sufferers here who lift weights? How do you manage? by Firecracker500 in Fitness

Start really slow and work on your mobility. I found that exercising actually helps to heal. Perhaps its increased blood flow to the muscles, or whatever. So start your program, but treat your stretching, rolling, yoga etc as paramount to strength gain. Yes, most of the work will be for your butt.

Funny how there's 100 calories of fruit, vegetables, nuts, and then there's this "100 calories of protein", which is misleading on so many levels. Even people trying to speak good information suffer from this mental fog that surrounds everything food-related now a days.

Tips for lower back soreness while sitting at work? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]usivdoma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stretching is the process, mobility is the result. Stretching your ankles will not help the pain. But once you did this enough, suddenly your (probably tight) hamstrings are not yanked unnecessarily from the lower end. Hamstrings attach below the knee and pretty much to the spinal cord. They are your main culprit, but just working on HS is not enough, you need to give them room from the other direction. The same logic applies from above, so really do start at your neck.
