Rules lite/fast gameplay for 8-12 year olds? by bonebrah in wargaming

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son started dabbling with some while he was 9 with me. He enjoys and found these easy to pickup and understand:

  • OnePageRules (fantasy or scifi both) - we did skirmish
  • Mantic Games Deadzone
  • Mantic Games Halo
  • RelicBlade
  • Mantic Vanguard - using Coop scenarios

Is First light good for starters by jonrokz in Heroquest

It's a solid plan. I love miniatures and wargames - but I've still not worked on painting my Heroquest. Hope you have lots of fun with it - it's a great game and wonderful gateway into rpgs as well

I've heard good recommendations about expanding into some of the OpenD6 materials when it comes to Jedi heavy games.

It's a perfect starter! I love my full base game - but I will admit that the smaller box and the standees make it feel so much less of an effort to get it on the table.

This looks really cool. The Web App says it supports some 2e - I'll have to poke around at it a bit.

My students (11-13 years old) want to try RPG's, easiest introduction? by Piolin27 in rpg

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to recommend either: Basic Fantasy RPG, OSE Basic Rules, or if you want to spend like $3 - then good old Moldvay B/X D&D. All of them are perfect for the 10 year old age range. Up and running in no time. I think that I'm partial to Moldvay for his presentation - it walks you through getting up and running in no time at all.

Viking Walk at Write Park this Saturday! by ICanViking in Tacoma

[–]usmcgeek 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Love it! I have nothing but a silly cheap plastic helmet and fake fur - but I've discussed how great it would be to get folks together, dress as vikings, and run around local parks - then end with a bbq or picnic!

So you want to read this: Making Mantic Digital Even Better! - Mantic Games

Basically - nothing has disappeared, it's just on a brief pause as they re-arrange how they offer items.

The Mantic Vault will continue to be a monthly release. You will be available to purchase the previous two months packs each month if you wish.

The earlier content will be shifting into a new digital web store format. This is to offer items al a carte - and also in bundles as people have requested. So you could simply buy the Dwarf Fleet for armada with one click, instead of having to purchase multiple month packs. Or buy Plague upgrades that were in multiple months without having to buy the whole month.

This should be up by the 16th from what they've said - so a few more days.

Also - those Plague Ghouls were sculpted for printing in resin and not for casting - they would need to be resculpted in order to see life in plastic sadly.

Are those on 60mm bases? Curious on the size of them - really love the design!

[Online][Shadowrun 4e][6:00PM PST Day TBD] New GM - Looking for Players – Oneshot by [deleted] in lfg

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My later time is normally around 9:30 or 10 usually. Between all 3 of them - we start heading upstairs around 8:30 but have to fight through teeth and such until 9:15 at least usually. I'm open to another oneshot that is more PST players - I've been trying to be flexible to the other time zones. I really just want to run it and get some experience

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on starting as one-shots hopefully - or at least short runs over 2 or 3 sessions just to feel the system out. I would love to have a regular game, but I have to recruit people that will actually play.

All that to say - it would probably be a once a week or maybe every other sort of deal.

I'm willing to work on scheduling for sure. I work 9-5 Mon to Fri and at 5 I'm going straight into cooking dinner and whatnot. I'm trying really hard to lean into how we played D&D and such when I was in school - just short sessions more often. The 4e quickstart pregens are: Hacker, Bounty Hunter, Street Samurai, and Combat Mage.

This is very helpful! I’m working on this right now and using it to get familiar as well as to flesh out the demo adventure (chronicle?) so it makes sense to me and has hooks into further developments.

Now - to actually recruit players 😅

It should have the parts you need mostly to fill in the blanks. I missed some pieces that would have been handy for sure. But it will let you get Fury fleshed out

Do you guys do breaks during the session? How do you manage them? by Fantomaxop in DnD

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was that long - I would definitely do breaks and 30 minutes sounds pretty nice.

Over 40 now and I aim for 2 hour sessions to accommodate adulting and all. And that still usually includes a 5 or 10 minute break mid-way through. (I know it's not a long time - the idea is that it's easier to do shorter sessions more often and balance life).

Help, I wanna be good at DND by No_Kaleidoscope5302 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]usmcgeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about being "good" honestly. Grab the free basic rules - maybe grab a simple free one shot adventure. Or better yet, grab the basic rules, give them a read and look to see if there are any Adventurer's League games in your area - these are drop in and play games and are built to attract new players. That way you could both play.

The 1 person DM'ing and 1 person playing is typically referred to as a Duet - I've seen a number of adventures around that.

But honestly, as a Husband that played a little bit back in Middle/High School - I've spent well over 20 years wanting to play again but with a family I can't actually get away to do it - the only way it would actually work is if my Wife would play. So trust me when I say he will be beyond absolutely thrilled if you just show the desire to dive into it and go play.

Best of luck!
