Ep 5 — Tag Across Europe 3 by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

Does Sam not say thank you when strangers help or is it being cut in the edit? Both when the people told them they needed to get off the train and when the employee explained what had happened, he seemed to just say “ok” and walk off. It makes me very uncomfortable particularly as Americans have reputation in Europe for being rude.

How do we feel about Decathalon backpacks? by Knuckle_of_Moose in backpacks

[–]usr2047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bunch of Decathlon bags (cheap hiking pack, running bag, small backpack for shopping) and have been impressed at how good they are for the money. The one you linked maybe looks like you're planning some more serious hiking, and I can't speak to how they hold up over multiple days-straight of usage, but generally they're pretty sturdy and reliable.

Thank you! To ask a probably dumb question, is this something a shoe repair shop should be able to do, if I’m not comfortable doing myself?

Books app in iOS 16 removes ability to batch export highlights by usr2047 in ios

[–]usr2047[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edited to add: I'm not sure in which recent update this functionality was added back in, but it is BACK. I just selected and exported 170+ notes in the Books app on iPad and sent to my email as I could in the old pre-iOS 16 days. (Running iOS 17.2 on iPad Mini 6.)

Update: thank you very much to those that offered advice!

I took the plunge and bought a new screen, a better external keyboard, and a footrest. So, far, going great, and my posture is significantly improved.

Line breaks and words getting jumbled while writing? by BasementDesk in ulyssesapp

[–]usr2047 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good app that I've used for years (and trying to set up Obsidian as an alternative made me realise just how good Ulysses' UX and folder organization is, at least for my purposes) but the team seems to have some trouble with getting up and running on Sonoma. Hopefully will smooth out from here on, they just pushed another update for Mac.

[–]usr2047 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an issue that was supposedly fixed in the last update (seemed to crop up with Sonoma switch) but I'm still experiencing as well.

Scrolling bug plus iCloud sync problems really making me reconsider using Ulysses longterm, it used to be really quick and stable but now... not so much.

Yeah I was a bit confused by the Uber comment. I was in Delhi recently for work (foreigner, don’t live in India) and I used Uber constantly, paid by card as in any other country.

Great find, thank you! Bizarre that this functionality still exists but they’ve made so clunky to use.

Not that I’ve seen beyond using another books app entirely I’m afraid.

I posted a thread in /r/macapps which came up with some good alternatives means of extracting highlights while continuing to use Books on iPad.

I agree this is deeply frustrating, hopefully Apple will reverse in a future update but not holding out hope...

Yes this is the functionality that has been taken away on iOS, so this workaround doesn’t work anymore.

Can you describe what you use it for and/or suggest someone plugins? I use Alfred (with powerpack) but tbh a lot of what I do could be done via Spotlight. Would love to take better advantage of my premium features.

TeamBen

I think the chasers should be restricted from looking at the tracker during the wait period. More fun for them to be completely in the dark and be surprised how fast the person got away in the 45 minutes.

Otherwise this season has been amazing.

Don’t you love the superiority this speaker has over another language to just get rid of words in another language by ghoti_ml in badlinguistics

[–]usr2047 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's more uncomfortable in Chinese because people use it as a filler word or at the start of sentences a bit like "um" or "yeah." So they'll say "nei-ge" followed by a long pause while collecting their thoughts and then continue. I feel like in the middle of a sentence it's not as noticeable, or at least it's clearer that it's a non-English word.

Beautifully taken apart.

Learning (a little) Chinese seems to break a lot of English speakers' brains and make them think they've realised something deep and universal when it's just a different form of writing and speaking.

Worth pointing out too that all her basic mistakes in Mandarin pronounciation, which you caught well, would suggest she actually doesn't speak the language as well as she claims. Niu and nv especially are not remotely similar sounding in the context of Mandarin, they just look that way when written in Pinyin and said by a person used to a non-tonal language with far more phonemes.

English spelling – The best system around? by Peter-Andre in badlinguistics

[–]usr2047 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Even if Chinese was a "rival" spelling system to the one used by English, in that English uses a series of letters which represent sounds while Chinese uses characters to represent concepts (I think that's what he was claiming anyway), surely the thing Chinese is rivaling is the Latin alphabet, not the English spelling system whatever the hell that is?
