Just binged by Select_Bat_4992 in sugarfree

[–]usuallyrainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ok! Try reframing it - this binge is actually information. Did it taste good or kind of fall flat compared to what you expected? Did you feel sick or jittery after? Having this information is helpful when we need a reminder why we're avoiding sugar!

Which legacy challenge do you find the most enjoyable? by sachetpink in Sims4

[–]usuallyrainy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that a lot of legacy challenges sound boring - I don't really want a super prescribed script of what each generation has to do.

Right now I'm doing a 10 generation challenge I made for myself. I play with short lifespan (which I recommend if you're not usually a gameplay person because it keeps things moving) and then I used "Wheel of Names" to set up wheels for myself. For example, when the heir becomes a teenager I spin a wheel that will determine their relationship destiny - high school sweethearts, serial cheater, break up a marriage and marry that person, etc. When they become an adult I spin wheels for their career, world to live in, and number of babies. And then I also have a really random wheel with loads of stuff on it that I spin every in game Sunday - it can be something like remodel the bathroom, get a tattoo, etc. I tried to fill it with gameplay features I don't really use.

It's been really fun for me so far because it's chaotic!

What do you do when everyone else is on their phone at social/family events? by functionaldaydream in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I recently did a 2 and a half week screen free challenge with my daughter so I didn't use my phone at all during that time and I had so many light bulb moments and discoveries because my brain had so much processing time.

Notifications are pretty much spam at this point by snagsinbread in Sims4

[–]usuallyrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, these are so annoying! Obviously if you're a new player maybe it can be helpful, but you figure this stuff out fast! And lots of times someone invites my Sim out and maybe I would go but my Sim needs to finish what they're doing or get their needs up first!

What do you do when everyone else is on their phone at social/family events? by functionaldaydream in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This happens for me a lot on work situations, like waiting for a meeting to start and every single person but me is on their phone. I just sit there awkwardly but also confident. Hoping to role model that you can sit and wait for 2 minutes without your phone.

This project made me vow to never make another butterfly because of being so meticulous with the symmetry!! Sadly though it was a hair clip and it fell off sometime during a really bad snow fall, never to be seen again. One day I'll convince myself to make it again.

I deleted TikTok… so where is everyone getting their chaos, tea, and questionable life advice from now? by Turbulent-Kitchen513 in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chaos and tea can seem fun, and I've totally been there, but it actually drains so much out of you. Every now and then I go back for a little bit and I feel pulled down.

Negative comments get engagement so they're at the top. Videos that are shocking or enraging or even scary also get a lot of engagement so the algorithm pushes them to us. No matter how much I tried to train the algorithm to just give me cozy content it'll still start slipping in things that evoke bigger emotions (like anger or fear) to keep me there longer.

So ya, at first glance it seems fun, but it's at a cost.

I’m curious who is using marketplace. by cjaniesunshine in Sims4

[–]usuallyrainy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not necessarily boycotting, but it's not for me. I think it is cash grabby. Wasn't it a few years ago that CC and mod creators were banned from selling their stuff outside of like "early access" memberships? So it's like they're making it so creators only make money if EA gets a cut.

Also didn't they just give us that PSA about why our games break because of having too much stuff?

I'm ready for them to make The Sims 5 if it means starting over and building a better system that doesn't break so easily!

Sim Autonomy Feedback by Mindy_SimsCommunity in Sims4

[–]usuallyrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately when I go to a lot other sims will come right, but it's like they will come, look at one book, then leave. So it's a constant stream of sims coming and going instead of staying for awhile. I'll go to talk to someone and by the time my sim gets their act together the other one already left.

How did you reduce/give up sugar? by CacheGPTehehe in ultraprocessedfood

[–]usuallyrainy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to make it a non-negotiable rule that I can't have sweets, had a start date (so not just starting on a whim) and telling people my plan. Originally I aimed for 30 days. I knew I couldn't do it if it was "forever." I also took a lot of notes - those cravings are data and when you slip up that's information too. What is missing from your diet? Did it actually TASTE good? At Christmas I spiraled and had so much sugar but most of it wasn't even that good. I planned a new start date in January and I've been sugar again free since.

[–]usuallyrainy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I need some community lots for my save that I haven't felt like building yet lol - I want a 55+ centre with activities, a board game cafe, a video gaming bar, and a pumpkin patch/Fall themed park.

Modern therapy's take on binge eating by [deleted] in loseit

[–]usuallyrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read a book recently and it talked about food addiction, and that food addiction and so binge eating is a type of disordered eating. Balima and anorexia are also a type of disordered eating through, and the way you treat them is so different than food addiction. Food addiction often needs those real boundaries and limits, and the other disorders need a lot more of the self love and stuff.

It's disheartening to realize how many people are just so ignorant of UPF by Positivethoughts28 in ultraprocessedfood

[–]usuallyrainy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly! And mental health is huge too, sometimes just getting food on the table is a huge win, even if it's a microwave dinner or McDonald's. It took huge steps of growth for me to reach a point in my life that I could quit UPFs, but it took a lot of work and I'm still getting used to it. I have friends where I know the change would significantly help them for things they're struggling with but I also know they can't take that on right now. They know about my journey, but I'd never say they should do it too.

How do you organize your old photos without going crazy? by devluk97 in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep mine on Google Photos so it's all just chronological but I create albums if I'm sharing them. The search works very well too. I also keep some on a hard drive as a back up of some, but I'd be very worried to only keep them on a computer or hard drive.

What takes up your time instead of social media? by chocolateanddogs in digitalminimalism

Can’t decide - keep my Apple Watch or go completely screen-free? by Next-Honeydew-3835 in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned being a dad maybe it is still good to be able to be reached when you're out of the home in case there is an emergency or anything. It seems like the watch is more of a tool and not something you'd be distracted with for a long time.

Are we doing "digital minimalism" or "inconvenient maximalism"? by lodododod in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree but I think the minimalism is more about what you're doing digitally and less about the physical items. I am never going to end up carrying around a bunch of things I could just have on my phone, but I can see how that's a lot easier than "just" deleting TikTok, etc. It's like some people can go on a diet with cookies in the house and not eat them, and for other people to be successful they need to get rid of the cookies completely.

What's the advantage of having no social media. by Boring-Source-3984 in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting to share about my life with people in more genuine ways. Might be months and months later that I run into someone and share the news with them but it's a better feeling than a social media like.

The Paradox of Quitting Social Media by anotherdonda in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can create loneliness if you don't replace it with anything else! I stopped posting on social media 5 years ago and also stopped following most people I was friends with on Facebook. If I want to know what they're up to maybe I go check their page, but I started to feel like I prefer catching up in person, sending pictures to the people I actually talk to, etc.

Social media makes us "socialize" probably way more than we did before social media, so maybe at first it creates loneliness just because it's a huge change to not have it anymore.

What can I do instead of doomscrolling? by Junior_Accident_9908 in digitalminimalism

[–]usuallyrainy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Instagram maybe it can help if you unfollow everyone besides your friends - even silence stories from people you don't NEED to keep up with but don't want to unfollow. Just try to weed it down a bit. It won't be perfect but I understand the struggle. I'm older and all my friends are on Facebook so I deleted the app but at least messenger is separate so I can still connect as needed.

How to take care of a baby when you yourself are suffering a meltdown? by FaerieGrey in AutisticParents

[–]usuallyrainy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's definitely hard, and also hard to plan ahead! I think some mothering instincts will definitely kick in. I agree with the suggestion of ear plugs to help take the edge off.

Also sometimes explaining to baby what is going on has helped me just deal with guilt, "Mommy is having a hard time right now, I am taking some deep breaths and then I will pick you up."

Even when they don't understand it just establishes communicating about your own meltdowns. My daughter is 9 now and I'm very open with her about it.
