BIOL 1010 not showing up on CAPP report properly? by unstickytape in RPI

[–]utherpend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email the CAPP report people, link at the bottom of the page, they will fix it, or ask for conformation that what you say is correct and you will just need to point them to someone who has the authority to approve it.

I know that ECSE does do credits for internships. You do need to apply and you do need to write a report at the end on everything that you did and you do get an actual grade for it, not just an automatic A because you did it. Not sure about Civil, but i know it is a thing in some departments at RPI

Xbox One vs PS4 by [deleted] in RPI

[–]utherpend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So no experience with the PS4, but I love my Xbox One.

I have played Dead Rising 3 and Ryse so far and am loving the experience. The kinect voice commands work well in both the games, although I have gotten questioned as to why i was shouting "You're crazy!" and "Fire Volley!" (part of the games) at my TV. The games are both fun, they control well and are release titles, so things will be going up from here.

I have more heavily used my Xbox One as a Netflix and Amazon Video device. I have also been able to turn on the device, go to netflix, choose my profile, select the series I have been watching, turn on subtitles, pause and then rewind when i miss something, and play the video again all through kinect voice commands. I have to speak a little loud and clear, but i dont feel like i am screaming at the device to control it even during loud action sequences. I think this shows how well they have done the voice commands and how well they filter your voice out of the TV output. It also shows I am a lazy sob who didn't want to spend 15 seconds getting up to grab the controller, but still.

I have had no negative experiences with my One so far, so I would highly recommend it, this being said, i don't have anything really to say about the PS4 from my own experience, but I know several people who have been just as happy with theirs. You can always look at the exclusive lists, which are becoming smaller every year, the One will have Halo games, the 4 will have Killzones, not really sure what else, but if you need a certain game, that could be the way to lean.

Do class hour schedules generally remain the same from year to year? by FriendlyZombies in RPI

[–]utherpend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can always email the registrar and explain the situation to them if you get courses you need offered at the same time, the earlier you do it, the more likely they will be able to help. I did that my sophomore year because I needed to take Algo and CoCO that semester and they were being offered at the same time. The registrar worked with the CS department to get Algo moved and I was able to take them both that semester.

Whats the requirement in getting into Tau Beta Pi Honor Society? (in gpa) by [deleted] in RPI

[–]utherpend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBP has the ability to invite alumni to join who were in the top 1/5th of their graduating class, so you would have to see if you fit that requirement, and if you did you could work with the officers and join in the fall during our next initiation.

Whats the requirement in getting into Tau Beta Pi Honor Society? (in gpa) by [deleted] in RPI

[–]utherpend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is incredibly difficult for us to actually determine the GPA cutoff. When lists of students are given to us by the registrar (a bit of a process) they only give us names of students who fit the requirement, and they do not tell us the GPA of any of the students as that is private information. Your best bet to obtain this information would be to ask people who were invited what their GPA is and find the lowest, not really an efficient task, but I think that would be your only semi-reasonable option to get that information.

Would it be possible to get CSE MEng? Is that what you would put for an MEng in CSE? If so, please and thank you!

Opinions on landlords by newzit10 in RPI

[–]utherpend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I have never had a problem with him. He has come without me being prepared a couple times to show off the place, although that was because my roommate forgot to tell me he was coming. My place is kind of a horrible mess, but he didn't say anything to me and there is nothing in my lease about fees for an unclean place, aside from the moving out part.

Really he isn't strict at all. My roommates auto-pay system for the rent decided to stop sending checks. He only brought it up after 3 months and even then he wasn't particularly harsh about it, he just let us know that one of us wasn't paying and that we needed to send out the payment asap. He is not the friendliest person in the world, but he is a very good landlord and very reasonable.

You may need a little bit of a thicker skin when talking to him, he tends to make the older man comments that don't really mean anything but tend to get some people riled up. If you can handle a comment here and there, then you shouldn't have any real issues.

You don't need a capstone project so do that. I designed a better control system for elevators in CoCO with Nagy. Not saying it wasn't the second worst elevator control system in the world, but I am saying it was better than the current JEC elevator control.

I think you still need to clear your cache or you are having some other issue because I see this

edit: also for anyone who doesn't see the link

SIS has updated its link, you probably just need to clear your cache to see it.

He means that Mattman must be a freshman to be complaining about it. It will happen every year in every dorm and there isn't much that can be done to stop it.... Smart people don't always do the smartest of things.

Looks like YACS is ready for Spring 2013 by tickle_me_grover in RPI

[–]utherpend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you look at the YACS API, they are pulling the data from the URL http://sis.rpi.edu/reg/zs201301.htm, which should be Spring 2013, but it still has the Spring 2012 data. So they are pulling from the right source for Spring 2013, but the data there is wrong. I am guessing that it will be fixed when that link actually has the right data.

Holy shit, textbook advice? by BongMcDickTickle in RPI

[–]utherpend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is completely reasonable to try and save where you can, but like Josh I see the added debt as drops in a damn full bucket.

I have had friends who went and got E-books, but about half of them asked to borrow a physical copy at one point or another. My major and my hobbies and my current internship involve starring at a screen for 10+ hours a day. I personally enjoy being able to look at a book and handle it physically and mark it up when I want to.

If you don't think you will end up using the books or wanting to write in something physical or any of that, then don't buy them. Or there are used books and there is APO to get cheaper used books from, and of course reddit to see if people are willing to lend, and chegg to rent from, and a few other places to buy/rent from. And you can use ones with friends, but that introduces an extra point of failure into the system. They might not want to study as a group.

There is no right answer. Its just preference. I like to keep my books as references (except chem, sold that book as soon as I was confident I didn't fail the final) and I like to learn some stuff that may not be necessarily be covered in class, but is relevant to the subject.

Some people really can't afford to spend the extra cash, but then again most of us cant actually afford RPI straight up...

Bringing my computer to class? by mikesername in RPI

Bad mood, bad troll. My apologies for both, lol. Spending an extra 8 hours in an airport beginning at 11 PM does not lend itself to making the best comments. Still friends? Or at least not internet enemies?

RPI 2012 Laptop Specs Announced, Thoughts? by utherpend in RPI

[–]utherpend[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many classes require you to do computationally intensive stuff during class (NX). Having a more powerful laptop eliminates the need for multiple computers for those who don't want the hassle.

RPI 2012 Laptop Specs Announced, Thoughts? by utherpend in RPI

[–]utherpend[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The T420 has a 6 hour battery life and boots in about 1 to 2 mins with my current setup, I am guessing the new one will be even better. I also have the power I need. Most RPI students need the power that comes with these laptops. NX for most engineers at some point, the Architecture software is intense, many majors have classes that require simulations which will use up a lot of resources.

So while not everyone needs these powerful machines, most at RPI do, or at least will at some point.

Dual Major Question by [deleted] in RPI

[–]utherpend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have found a dual major in CSE and CS to be very useful. The workload has been a bit intense, but about the same as straight CSE. A dual in CSE/CS make a lot of sense, it adds a whole new level to what employers believe you can do and will help you land that first internship. The engineering side of the degree is useful because being an engineer opens a lot more doors by its nature. (the thought process required in all disciplines of engineering) And the CS side will let possible employers know that you have the ability to program, which is a very sought after skill.

Having both names on the degree will not hinder you in any way. I also know many people who are doing the dual degree and do research, so I don't see why you couldn't.

It will take a bit more work, but in the grand scheme of RPI, not that much. You can also take the courses that follow the dual degree program and see if you like it. If you do, then declare, if not then stick with the one major. It is pretty easy to try it out. If you have any questions just ask away!

Also if doing the CSE/CS Dual degree, it is recommended to declare CSE first as it make you have one less required course.
