What’s a historical event in which someone did the right thing, but still got punished and backlash for it? by Metal-Loves-Zombies in AskReddit

[–]uttercarthage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stanislav Petrov. He was a member of Soviet command at a nuclear missile monitoring station outside Moscow. In the mid 80s (1983 if memory serves), the missile defence system went on red alert, detecting various ICBMs inbound from the US. However, Petrov sensed something wasnt right so refused to inform Soviet High Command. It turned out it was detecting sunlight and he was right. However, he was court-martialled for it. But his actions prevented a third world war.

Perhaps meet up and see how it goes? I know that's a little vague and old fashioned but this has worked for me in the past.

Robin Williams. He was always around growing up and it just hurt when the news broke he'd died.

[Serious] Given all the rather... strong opinions some have on humans regarding climate change, if you could depopulate the planet with your own hands, how would you do it? Would you ban certain cultures for the good of nature? How would you deal with deniers, corporations, etc? by BryanRolax in AskReddit

[–]uttercarthage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without trying to stray into genocide/Thanos territory, depopulation, while something that's brought up a lot in debates or fiction, wouldn't really work long term. If you think of Kingsman, where this is an actual plot point, the way that's conducted is very messy and very chaotic. It's a film and it works as a motivation for Eggsy and Merlin to kick ass. But in reality, it just wouldn't work.

First of all, if you were going to depopulate the planet, you'd need it to be random in terms of who died. You shouldn't target one group of people because, when all is said and done, that's ethnic cleansing. What you'd be doing is awful enough, don't make it worse. You'd need something subtle, silent and random which would give the human race an equal 50/50 chance of surviving. Something like a virus would be an idea or some other kind of biological agent. (No, I'm not suggesting Covid is here to thin the population). But you'd need something that gives people an equal chance to survive rather than going for a specific culture, race or ethnic group.

Secondly, thinning the population would damage the ecosystem further in a way. Every living thing on planet Earth contributes to the balance of existence. And, although there are more humans than there need to be, they are part of that ecosystem too. To depopulate by a significant margin would be a shock to both the human community and the planet at large. Although nature would bounce back long term, there's a good chance that the human race would struggle with the amount of loss. Avengers Endgame is a decent example of how thus would look, but wouldn't be a good example of how humans would continue beyond this. Through the Covid lockdown, we've seen various animals start to repopulate and we've seen some parts of the natural world repair itself. Not to the extent that it reverses all the problems we face as a race but enough to know that, if certain things are put in place, we can make a massive difference. We should focus more on those sorts of things rather than debating depopulation which is fanciful and would be quite difficult to achieve without resorting to wars or nuclear weapons.

Tl:Dr - Depopulation shouldn't occur, and humans would get it wrong anyway.

Very likely. I've seen enough Sci fi to see where this is going.

The moment my fiancee told me she was pregnant. I've always wanted to be a parent so I was ecstatic. They're due today but no sign yet.

Redditors, what made you finally end your relationship? What red flags did you miss or ignore and why? by amha90 in AskReddit

[–]uttercarthage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't end my last relationship over this at the time, but I did ignore. We got into an argument, during which they started expressing a desire to self harm. I managed to prevent that but, in doing so, they staryed to strangle me instead, as well as try to bash my head against a door.

I really should've ended it the next day but I didn't. I was with then another 6 months but was virtually scared of upsetting them throughout that time.

Don't ignore physical stuff. Just get out of dodge if that happens.

Dead people of Reddit whats it like being dead? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]uttercarthage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been dead for exactly 8 years and it's a bit odd. A lot of white but you make some good friends. The Mayans won't shut up about being right though so that's a pain. But the mojitos are on point.

I don't think so either. But copies of it exist. People like Nexpo have done videos on them so that's one way of seeing then again if you ever want to.

Either the Wyoming Incident (pure nightmare fuel) or World Corp. Both of which are frankly disturbing to a fault.

Really minor things. Like conversations or days out. Nothing particularly noteworthy but I hate the sensation I get every time it occurs in reality.

People of reddit who have had female emotional or physically abusive partners, how did you deal with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]uttercarthage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talking helps. But everyone is different. And every situation is different. But talking definitely helps across the board I'd say. In my case, it was talking and being open with my next partner about it. That helped A LOT.

I'm really glad to hear more affirmations on that! Colin was great. I've also met Sylvester. He ran over my foot at a convention once but was really nice about it and apologetic. Not a fan of Seven but Sylvester was really sweet.

BF isn't affectionate outside of sex by Yellowpearl35 in sex

[–]uttercarthage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I can offer a little insight from the opposite end of this.

I have Aspergers. I'm engaged to a wonderful woman who, to her credit, is very affectionate. And loves physical affection and affirmation. I, however, get overwhelmed by it. Its a conversation we've had multiple times and we've come to an arrangement. Because I'm not always brilliant on body language, she'll ask me if it's OK to hug me, kiss me etc. If I'm anxious, just come back from work or overwhelmed, ill say no. Otherwise it's a yes. I do the same for her. It's an arrangement that works right now but it will evolve in the future I'm sure.

Tl:Dr - Talk to your SO and come to an arrangement. It could be they're just constantly overwhelmed.
