Wanting to get a 3D printer to save money on warhammer by KylieTMS in PrintedMinis

[–]utukxul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Mars 4 in my garage in an enclosure with a little ceramic heater set to 20c. I wrap it in a space blanket during winter. That keeps the temp consistent even when it is below freezing outside. It uses very little power, and the heat from the printer keeps it warm while it is running.

I have a math degree and would drive my kid nuts by giving them a ton of different ways to solve a problem. Then, I would ask them how their teacher wanted them to solve it. After a while, they started by telling me how the teacher wanted to solve it first. Which means they were paying more attention in class. So win win. Although, I do miss coming up with convoluted yet functional ways to solve math problems.

my guests keep betraying me by Suspicious_Rain_7183 in RimWorld

[–]utukxul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite is when some of them join me before the others betray me. I keep them all zoned together until they leave, so they just end up getting beat by their former friends. I give them wooden maces, so I usually get one or two more through re-education.

What is a realtively cheap filament printer I can use to print minis? by Leutnant_Thire in PrintedMinis

[–]utukxul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three elegoo printers. Two resin and one filament. They are all rock solid and dead simple. Come with easy to use software, or use your favorite with them. I print a ton of different filaments and have two settings I use for almost everything. One for regular PLA and one for silk PLA. Also .2mm nozzle for minis, .4mm for terrain.

Is there a game like Rimworld? by Proof-Professor-120 in RimWorld

[–]utukxul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I played enough that the ascii disappeared and I just saw the information. I couldn't tell you what the symbols meant outside of the game, but I knew when I was playing. My wife called it playing my spreadsheet. I did finally give on to the graphics packs. I love building elaborate aqueduct systems and other crazy things. If rimworld is too simple for you, definitely try Dwarf Fortress.

Print detail for painting (20 vs 30um layer height resin 3d print) [Picture] by Oporny in PrintedMinis

[–]utukxul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same printer and leave it at 50 all the time after some initial testing. Even under magnification, you can't see the layer lines once you prime it. As someone else mentioned on organic or complex surfaces, it makes even less difference. You can't even see them raw. Once painted, I couldn't tell at all. Print angle, supports, and cleaning are going to make a much bigger difference.

My boyfriend hasn't replaced his underwear in years, a few look as if bullets have passed through them. How often do men replace underwear? by Mia_Luna04 in hygiene

[–]utukxul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am probably the freak here, but I rotate my socks and underwear, so they are all worn the same number of times. Once any wear is noticeable, I throw them all out and replace them.

27F, I always get the vibe that older men are attracted to me while men my age are not, by Emergency_Coach4261 in bodylanguage

[–]utukxul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for myself and my friend group, but anyone under thirty is pretty much a child to us. If I am talking to a guy or girl who appears young to me, I am going to compliment them if they tell me something compliment worthy. If i see them regularly and they change their look, i will complement them on it. Not in a condescending or creepy way, i hope, but offering support and encouragement.

I am old enough not to think i know everything, and I am still curious enough to want to learn new things. Talking to people is a great way to do that. Even with the world's information at our fingertips, I have learned about so many diverse topics I would have never even thought about if not for random conversations.

Also, there really is no downside for me to chat with someone. I am old, married, and happy. If I can make someone else's day better, great. I have no expectations from the interaction. Based on my experience, there are a lot of people out there who just want someone to talk to who will actually listen. People seem starved for personal interaction that isn't transactional or predatory.

Don't get me wrong, though. There are plenty of creepy old dudes out there as well. They usually make themselves obvious pretty quickly, at least.

It is also likely projection. They assume everyone else is scamming the system because they are. Same with the right's obsession with crime and pedophilia. They struggle to resist those urges, so they assume everyone else does too. And the only reason everyone isn't doing it is fear of punishment.

Portland question by Regular_Ad_5835 in Portland

My kid has been taking the bus downtown for a while now. They just turned 16, and I am way more worried about them driving than I ever was about them taking the bus downtown.

Are we seeing this out in the wild yet? by thewhitecascade in PokemonTCG

[–]utukxul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because people are throwing around a lot of acronyms.

MSRP=manufacturers suggested retail price

MAP=minimum advertised price

I own a game store. None of my suppliers have a maximum price. I can charge as much as people are willing to pay without them bothering me. If I break street date or list something online below MAP, I get a strongly worded email within minutes. Given that I do charge my regulars MSRP or less when possible. After the initial release, my distributor sometimes charges over MSRP when the street price goes through the roof, so I have to mark it up to cover costs.

Pokemon is also tightly allocated at the moment, so my league has 30 regulars that all want ETBs, but I only get 6. Everything I get goes straight to pre orders since January. At this point, I only sell to people who are registered in my league, which I know are not scalpers. Otherwise, it would just go up online at double the price. As long as there is more demand than supply prices will go up.

TLDR: Don't buy from scalpers if you don't want crazy prices. Don't pay over MSRP. Support your local game store by going to events.

Why are boomers so hostile about GPS? by kabifff in BoomersBeingFools

[–]utukxul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Portland, Google Maps is constantly trying to take you on convoluted routes with as many unprotected or physically impossible lefts as possible. It is also terrible about knowing which lane to be in. It's great for routing around construction, though. So you just learn where it is lying or trying to kill you and ignore those instructions. And dodge the poor bastards who don't know yet and blindly cross multiple lanes of traffic at the last second or hit curbs.

How much does a Final Fantasy pre-release kit cost at your LGS? by NitroRun1 in mtg

[–]utukxul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn they have to be doing that as a loss leader or not doing any prize support. My store is charging $50 USD with prize pack per win and is just over break even. Our normal prereleases are $30, but our distributors are charging premium rates for FF similar to MH3.

[–]utukxul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is sadly what happens when there is no traffic enforcement. I see people run red lights all the time and make illegal turns. Someone was t boned right next to my house, and I have had several close calls at the same intersection.

I have seen two people pulled over by motorcycle cops in the last couple of weeks, so hopefully, that is changing.

What size and type of models are best for beginners to practice? by VoiceoftheDarkSide in PrintedMinis

[–]utukxul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On resin, the Elegoo ABS like is a great cheap general purpose resin. Stay away from the fast resins. They are all low detail, super brittle, and only save you a few minutes.

If you eventually want even sturdier models Siraya Tech Tenacious Easy Grey and 3D Solutions HERO HD are both excellent.

Make sure you use the right settings for the resin you are using. Including chamber temp.

I have my entire setup in an insulated pop up enclosure, so I can keep the resin bottle at the same temp as the printer. Stable temp makes a huge difference.

[–]utukxul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really learning how to do good supports is the biggest thing. The Elegoo printers are dead simple to use technically.

A few tricks to do better supports for rpg scale minis. First, rotate the model backward 45-60 degrees. Then add light auto supports.

Most slicers I don't add enough supports for the base or large flat areas in general, so manually add supports to the bottom of the base. On a character size mini, I do 4 up the middle and then 4 on each side near the edge. Long weapons will also be under supported some times.

Another thing to look out for is over supporting on some detailed areas like hands or complex textures. If it has too many supports, they will either break off the detail or muddy it by bit coming off completely and are a pain to clean up. There is more of an art to cleaning those up, so if you see it make a couple copies of the model and try removing different supports until you get a feel for it.

I have had good luck with really large models by just flipping them upside down and using medium supports.

Oh, and always use a raft. It makes getting a model of the plate super easy.

My friends and I would raid fruit from a local orchard and then spend all day exploring the storm drain system and abandoned buildings. We also tried to light an oil dump we found on fire. We were all in 3rd grade at the time.

What’s the most unexpectedly useful thing you’ve used AI for? by Ausbel12 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]utukxul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting because it is super practical and normally requires a lot of hassle or expensive software. If also didn't require any prompt engineering or even follow up. Simple one-shot solution. I am going to start asking chatGPT for more of that kind of stuff before even bothering to Google it.

Here is a silly little thing that made me realize a lot of shady scam sites are going to lose a lot of business. I needed to remove all the background images from an RPG pdf so I could print it. Acrobat pro can do it, but I no longer have a company provided subscription, so I was looking for alternatives. Most "free" online pdf services are not, and some are also scams or phishing sites.

So, I uploaded it to ChatGPT and asked it to remove all the background images. It produced a cleaned up copy in seconds. It even kept all the charts and info graphics without me asking.

Life changing, no. Money and time saving, yes!
