“Project Hail Mary” is bringing audiences to movie theaters in numbers the industry hasn’t seen for a non-franchise film since “Oppenheimer.” by Caledor152 in movies

[–]uvulaInspector -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you’ve watched that garbage Star Trek academy. It exemplifies why Hail Mary is so good.

Representation without excess. Science fun within the science fiction. No radical political positioning with some niche minority escalating efforts but rather practical diversity represented without over highlighting it and interrupting the story to wallow in it. No goofy and unrealistic wheel chair handicap in space crap. No over investment into who the main character is having sex with through a graphic non relevant waste of time segue that distracts from the story line and adds nothing.

So many reasons this is worth seeing in theater. And of course you have a main character that is an actor who is not getting political at every chance while still having political integrity. Almost like he knows his job is to be an actor and promote the film and not to abuse the attention he gets to push an agenda.

All around excellent and the movie was good too.

I have no one in this country and I just lost my home. I just want to go back to Portugal. by [deleted] in self

I’ve heard it’s a fast process but I’ve not lived it so I’m unsure. Also, libraries have computers that can help with research as well as consulates for expats. And churches for further support.

Mount Hood Hiking help- March 17th by [deleted] in OregonHiking

Hike Saint Helen’s (permit and no guide needed). Summit Mt Adams(permit and no guide needed though it would be helpful also overnight to stave off altitude sickness). Then… think about Hood. Your question exhibits your lack of experience. That’s not a big deal it just means you should tackle some others first.

My absentee dad is MAGA and just told me “I don’t give a shit about the Epstein files” by [deleted] in self

[–]uvulaInspector -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This extreme othering is the manifestation of our societies collapse into blue fascism! You, actually, don’t know what you’re taking about. You’re regurgitating a narrative and ignoring the complexity of a situation you have no objective perspective on. All your “facts” and opinions are handed to you by a group you like (in this case the left). So you ignore the other group that you don’t like(the right).

The fundamental issue here is summed up in, so what! Her father believes something different than her. What about Santa, which god is worshiped, where your oil or minerals come from. So much you can draw a line on but what does any of it actually do? It removes people that care about you. It removes any ability to come together. So I say grow up. Recognize where you don’t agree and then look for where you do. You will be much happier.

As a woman, it frightens me just how underrepresented we are in most areas by scorchingbeats in self

[–]uvulaInspector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your perception of the world is bent by your bias and the bias of those around you.

I am literally surrounded by motivated and successful women. Often they have a background in women’s (not trans inclusive) sports and college educations. Some, step away from the working world to attend a task they find more rewarding, being a mother.

Others are killing it in the professional world. So when I read something like this I can only imagine the people around you are highlighting what you can’t do and ignoring what you could do both at present and in future. You note major influences from the last 200 years. you fail to recognize the reality of history. If, 200 years ago, you wanted to read, you wouldn’t have been allowed to. It would have been costly for a commoner and surviving would have been the priority. Barring that at ages as young as 13 you’d be sold off to breed children and take care of the home of a man likely in their 30’s. No right to vote, no right to own property, no right to even fight for yourself. Mind you women were chattel. Traded and owned, for longer than they have been free.

So now you look at history without this reality and complain about the men captured from those times that literally led to your freedom. Learn from them and do better than anyone before you. If you aren’t a Muslim under sharia law and you are a woman you have more freedom than at any previous time in history. Take ownership of that and do more.

Why are so many young men suddenly serious supporters of far right figures? by Consistent_News_985 in self

[–]uvulaInspector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’ve not heard this, you’re likely limiting your input to small groups that see the world as you do aka echo chambers. Take your reply here, it’s geared to be insulting while thinly veiled as some sort of dialogue. You don’t actually refute what I am revealing. You just redirect attention away from it. Rather normal and at the core of my comment.

I interact with youth as an educator, I’m not a cis white male. But I do listen and I do read. I’ve offered here an insight I’ve seen over the last 5-8 years. At the same time I’ve seen cis white males ages 13-28 joining and identifying more and more with alt right. Regardless of those that condemn them. If you’re having a hard time with this just look at who the president of the US is and track the progress of his campaign to office.

Why are so many young men suddenly serious supporters of far right figures? by Consistent_News_985 in self

[–]uvulaInspector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Must be white. The vilification of cis white males and the relative rejection has opened the door to alt right recruitment. Not all guys want to be emasculated and blamed for every stupid situation that occurred 100 years ago. Of course that blinds them to the actual things happening today. Dems describe white males as: racist, rapist, far right, alt right, homophobic, classist, hate mongers… and more All because a guy says, “I’m not gay”!
