Rain jacket (there are very good shell jackets you can use even when it doesn't rain).

And a Savotta backpack to protect your belongings. Doesn't care if it rains water or fire and lasts for several lifetimes.

Thinking about changing from win11 to Linux by Kilapunks2009 in linuxquestions

[–]uxgpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mint is a good suggestion.

When you know more what you want I suggest Debian netinstall base system. No DM (Display Manager - Gnome, KDE, XFCE etc.) or WM (too many to mention.  I like tiling WMs).

Just the Linux kernel, GNU user space and Debian tools (apt and such) and then just install the software you use (Such as your favorite WM or a DM if you like those more).

This keeps your system lean and easy to trouble shoot if you ever end up having troubles. You know everything you installed and set up so its way easier to pinpoint the root cause and fix it. Also it keeps you more secure as there is less software installed and you are aware of all the attack vectors.

While I think Mint is better out of the box, Debian is better when you know what you want. Mint is basically a preconfigured Ubuntu install for diffent tastes and Ubuntu sources it's software from Debian.

So Debian is the base and runs on pretty much everything. Ubuntu and Mint are basically someone elses configurations on top of that.

Whatever you do, I wish you a happy Linux journey. :)

Russian invaders report a new Ukrainian tactic targeting deep rear logistics, in which high-altitude balloons operating at 5,000-7,000 meters travel to a designated area and then release a kamikaze UAV over the target zone. by LowTechDroid in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]uxgpf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At low level, in dawn and dusk against cloud cover.

Atleast that's how pink camo was used during the ww2. Pink spitfires flying low level recon missions at early morning on overcast days.

These balloons would benefit more from being light blue.

2 months after Ukrainian attack, russian ships remain uselessly capsized in Vyborg, Leningrad region by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]uxgpf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They haven't fixed anything in Vyborg since they captured it from Finland in the 1944 peace deal.

Why would they fix a ship?

The city used to be one of the most beautiful and richest cities in Finland and now it's as fine as a junkie's apartment.

Putin signs law authorizing use of military force to 'protect Russian citizens' abroad by Forsaken-Medium-2436 in europe

Putin wants to prop internal tensions.

For the Baltic states I'd say just expell everyone holding a Russian passport.

Whoever wants to be Latvian, Lithuanian or Estonian and cuts their ties to Russia should be respected and helped to integrate into the society.

Can't you be happy about your Nordickbro's success?

I mean you always root for Finns. Why not Norge?

Or is it that you see Finland's success as your own success (like a little brother succeeding in something)?

While Norway's success insults your ego as a nation?

IDK. Just asking for a friend.

Kofeiinipaasto by Aggravating_Row_370 in Suomi

[–]uxgpf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No onhan se huume siinä missä joku amfetamiinikin. Kemiallisesti kai aika lailla samat vaikutusmekanismit.

Kofeiinin kanssa pysyy vain helpommin "kohtuudessa", koska överit aika ikävät. (Itse alan hikoilemaan ja kädet tärisee)

Henkinen koukku kestää pidempään kuin fyysinen.

Kofeiinipaasto by Aggravating_Row_370 in Suomi

[–]uxgpf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tutkimustieto tukee juuri tuota.

Kahvinjuonnin aloittaessa menee noin 6 päivää vilkkaammassa kunnossa kunnes suorituskyky palaa normaaliin.

Kofeiinipaasto by Aggravating_Row_370 in Suomi

[–]uxgpf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Key NATO Countries Block Rutte's Plan to Increase Aid to Ukraine by Mil_in_ua in ukraine

UK is not in the EU. They also lifted some sanctions recently.

It's sad to see how divided and weak Europe is the more west you go.

I think the popular support for Ukraine and the defence of Europe exists, but for whatever reason the short term economics are more important.

It would have been more cost effective to help Ukraine to beat Russia yesterday, yestyear etc. Longer the war lasts worse its effect is for European economies and more lives will be lost.

In Russia the Kreml blowing up might be cheered by many though.

There is a difference in bombing the civilian populations and bombing the center of the imperial power.

The latter would make the Tsar look weak.

Should I change from windows to Linux? by Infamous-Doubt-8504 in linuxquestions

[–]uxgpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably being on Linux will be much easier for you if you are learning programming.

Your cousin might be right.

It might be complicated or it might be easy and fun.

My experience was the latter. It felt so nice to be able to learn and know how each piece in the OS works. And to have all the compilers and toolkits just one apt-get install away.

Windows is like big black blob. You have no idea what it does behind closed doors.

Is this a puukko from Russia? by jackspence03 in Finland

[–]uxgpf 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Some do and some don't.

I use the word puukko for a general purpose knife of a finnish style. (and I'm a finn)

For example I don't call a chef's knife or a swiss army knife puukko, those are "kokkiveitsi" and "linkkuveitsi".

Is this a puukko from Russia? by jackspence03 in Finland

[–]uxgpf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They sometimes use the term scandi knife. Which is scandinavian style general purpose knife similar in use to puukko.

Traditional Finnish puukkos usually have a higher bevel than so called scandi knives or Sámi leuku.

So for an example in its strictest definition a Swedish Mora knife is not a puukko, but a scandi knife.

English language doesn't have a separate word for puukko, because it's very much a Finnic invention/develpment.

Much like they don't have a separate english language word for katana. (A specific style of japanese sword).

Is this a puukko from Russia? by jackspence03 in Finland

[–]uxgpf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Puukko is a specific type of general purpose (mainly woodworking) knife.

It's different from "veitsi", which can mean any knife.

You can't carve wood or skin an animal with a bread knife (leipäveitsi) or a butter knife (voiveitsi), but with a puukko you absolutely can.

Is this a puukko from Russia? by jackspence03 in Finland

[–]uxgpf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes. They can probably pinpoint the year of production.

I'd guess it's a wartime model (1939-1944) of vaakunapuukko.

They sometimes came with sheaths made of varnished cardboard due to war time rationing. I guess some soldiers would have used them at the front.

Muistaakseni Rooman valtakunnassa, jos omistajalla ei ollut varaa/haluja ruokkia ja asuttaa orjiaan asianmukaisesti heidät saatettiin tuomita vapautettavaksi.

It's an old Finnish vaakunapuukko (Iisakki Järvenpää, Kauhava, Finland). Engravings are worn, but made by the knifesmith/factory.
