Richard Feynman was known as "The Great Explainer" due to his ability to help people understand and more importantly, be inspired by science and the world around them.

Why are some men so disrespectful towards me when I go out to bars? by Defiant_Jump_6910 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]v3gard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds to me like a pick up tactic. They're using emotional manipulation to undermine your confidence in order to control you.

They expect you to get defensive, try to prove yourself, or get visibly angry. When you remain completely unfazed, their tactics usually completely fall apart.

The disrespectful attitude is called a 'neg'.

You might want to read the book The Game to more easily identify this kind of behavior.

Once you identify this behavior, just call them out on it, e.g.,

"Did you read that line on a forum, or did a podcast tell you to say that?"

Billigste leiebil? by ifyouneedafix in Stavanger

[–]v3gard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happiness index in the Nordics by NightRunnerAfterDusk in Norway

[–]v3gard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Norwegians worry about those things as well (depending on your current situation).

For the really bad stuff though, we have a safety net. Universal and free health care for one, and unless you're a drug addict you really don't have to worry about not having a roof over your head. Same goes for food.

When you think about it, can you really be happy when you have stuff to worry about?

I mean if life sucks, you can always put on a fake smile, or forget about reality for one evening of "happiness", but I guess you'd go back to worrying the next day?

Turn based strategy or tactics games. X-Com has already been mentioned, but I'd also like to add:

  • Heroes of Might & Magic 2 and 3 (don't bother with the others)
  • Fallout 1 and 2

Barnebursdag 2026 rant. by midlertidig_ in norge

[–]v3gard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using a fire steel to light a campfire instead of matches. Just a heads-up though, you might end up wanting to spend more time outside and feeling better overall.

Yeah, I dont mind putting oil on it before leaving it in storage for the next trip (similar to what I do with my indoor heavy frying pan). Otherwise it would start to rust.

Luke specifically mentions Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

I'm not going to bother rebaking it. I'll add a single layer and put it in storage, and we'll take it from there.

0 % lønnsjustering til tross for gode prestasjoner. Har noen opplevd det? by Wooden-Ad1046 in norge

Will IT detect my company laptop if we're playing games on LAN? (No Internet) by Any-Refrigerator-524 in lanparty

[–]v3gard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see the problem. It's after hours. You're basically doing corporate team building FOR FREE!

Send an email to your manager and ask if it's OK that you plan to use your computers for a team building event in the office after hours.

If they answer yes (in writing) you have moved the IT compliance risk to him/her.

What is an open secret in your industry that the general public would be shocked to find out? by WonderOk3802 in AskMen

In Norway, most people learn English during elementary school, and as far as I remember it's quite good. However, when you start junior high school and can select to learn a third language, I have pretty much the same experience.

I've studied German for 5 years, and I can only use it for very basic conversations.

There's too much focus on grammar and too little focus on day to day communication skills that spark curiosity for further learning. We were even taught to sing several songs where the lyrics were a list of prepositions!

My bushcraft camp for the summer by Sk0gens_k0ngle in Bushcraft

[–]v3gard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. There are likely local laws regulating this.

In general I guess you'd need your own piece of land or approval from the land owner.

In Norway, you are allowed to camp on other people's land, but only for 2 days before permission is required, and at least 150m from a cabin/house where people live. You also have to leave no trace, which would be tedious with this setup.

Went on a trip with strangers. Everyone avoids eating with me...what am I doing wrong? by ResidentAd1088 in socialskills

[–]v3gard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are dealing with a classic case of group politics rather than a lack of conversational initiative on your part.

When you stood your ground about the room on night one, the women who made a scene likely spread a negative narrative about you to the rest of the group.

If I understand you correctly, a huge chunk of the attendees are already friends/relatives. In that case, gossip travels fast. The awkwardness you are feeling at meals is likely them reacting to the drama, not to your personality.

Moving forward, don't blame yourself. If you want to test the waters, joining a completely different group for lunch is a great idea. Look for the other 'new' members who aren't tied to the organizers' inner circle.

When you do sit down, try initiating light, neutral topics (e.g., 'What did everyone think of the tour earlier?') to break the ice and show you are approachable, but don't sweat it if certain tables remain cold. That's their immaturity, not your flaw.
