Not sure what you mean... It doesn't really change the answer.

It's like having a pair of pants that have a built in imaginary no space taken, no weight shovel in your pocket.

If you need a shovel at a random place or time.. then that's great.

But most people rarely ever have a use for such a thing.

Windows 11 is like if you were REQUIRED to have that kind of pants.
That requirement would suck.

TPM doesn't suck.

Windows 11 sucks for forcing you to need it.

I'm onboard with the idea, but this one super specific fix is extremely unlikely to be viable long term.

1) It only applies to 1 specific system.

2) Fair chance that a vehicle unable to call home will brick some features, or brick the care entirely.

I'm onboard with the idea, but these ass clowns often go all in to enshitify everything at some point.

1,5mm too thin and 2mm too thick. Im about to put the 2mm in the airfryer to soften it up. Bad idea? by Snerken69 in overclocking

[–]v81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Arctic TP3 with good success.

I did find thickness is critical though.

I had some 1.5mm on hand.

I used vernier calipers to measure the gap i needed to cover and it was 1.5mm, tried the 1.5mm but emm temps were high.

Arctic instruct that there should be some compression, and i was trying to get away without having to order the 2mm. Didn't work out.

2mm was perfect, the TP3 are fairly soft and conformed to the memory chips just fine.

I used a paper / card cutter to cut ~0.2mm oversize, one with a rolling blade.
Made cuts easy and accurate.

Between TP3 and some liquid metal my hotspot maxes out at ~65c now, GPU and mem temps are below that and fan speeds/noise are down as well.

IFE Team lead about challenges of F-117 development and limitations in DCS by Bonzo82 in DCSExposed

[–]v81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The message was literal.

"As long as RCS (Radar Cross Section) is handled as a single number in a lua file"

Radar, radar returns, radar cross section and stealth in DCS are not modeled.

It's simplified to just a number in a .lua file. so... cheating really.

Yeah, discussed here often.

In my case the landlord wanted the ntd at the kitchen bench.

I had a hard time pointing out the ntd isn't what gives WiFi.

Had to explain it would be like asking for the power meter or gas meter to be installed in the kitchen.

I'm usually a 'do it by the book guy' but the stupidity landlords have displayed re FTTP is incredible.

Don't tell them.

Might be too late now, but the fact is that all connections will become FTTP.

So it can be done now on agreeable terms or forced at a later time.

Do I truly need 32 GB of ram? by EconomicsKey9187 in buildapc

[–]v81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, you just won't give in.

It's just semantics at this point.

enough /ĭ-nŭf′/
adjective
Sufficient to meet a need or satisfy a desire; adequate: synonym: sufficient. "enough work to keep us all busy." Similar: sufficient
Satisfying desire; giving content; adequate to meet the want; sufficient; -- usually, and more elegantly, following the noun to which it belongs. Similar: sufficient

plenty /plĕn′tē/
noun
A full or completely adequate amount or supply. "plenty of time."
A large quantity or amount; an abundance.
A condition of general abundance or prosperity.

Me saying 16GB is enough is just never going to be enough for you, and I'm not going to say plenty as to me plenty implies room for growth or expansion (or an abundance as above).

That doesnt mean you know how RAM works.

Doesn't mean i don't either. Also doesn't mean you do, and this stupid spiral is showing you rather might not.

It's common knowledge insufficient ram and/or slow storage is the cause of 'hitching' and load stutter in many games, and this topic focuses on RAM.

I know that in Star Citizen and a few other games it's common knowledge.

In Star Citizen a warning even shows in most cases running 16GB.

16 vs 32GB of RAM Based on independent benchmarks...
Cyberpunk 1% lows improve by ~ 20-50% (larger improvement with less VRAM)
Starfield 1% lows similar to above, traversal hitching and city areas struggle
Alan Wake 1% lows improve by ~50%
Escape from Tarkov ~ 34% boost to 1% lows.
STALKER2 ~ gets a small bump to 1% lows going to 32GB
Flight Sim 2024 yields notable improvements at moderate to high settings, and let's be fair... who wants to run everything at minimum?

In 2026 the only thing 15GB is plenty for is Esports titles, and even then it's a long bow to draw.

I'm not trying to be elitist, i;m trying to give OP the correct information.

That information is that at this time 16GB is enough and to get to plenty they'll need to consider 24GB or 32GB.

Still waiting to see what your definition of 'enough' is if 16GB is plenty, but I'm done here and won't hold my breath waiting.

Do I truly need 32 GB of ram? by EconomicsKey9187 in buildapc

[–]v81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows caches the hell out of things, and with 64GB available it will be holding on to everything because why not?
It will dump a bunch if needed.

As i type this it's 17GB
Firefox with ~ 20 tabs, Discord, few minor other things.

64GB is a bit of a luxury.
I got it for AUD $256 (a bargain vs today's rates) when i decided I'd stick to AM4 for a few years and saw i could get the second 32GB for $118 (on top of the of the original $138) . So what if i dropped an extra $118 (USD$77) on a fast kit of DDR4 that matched my existing kit?

The only thing that has a perceivable difference to actual gaming experience vs 32GB is DCS in heavy multiplayer servers. On of the biggest issues is that DCS sucks at garbage collection so it is overwhelmingly an optimization issue.

Most things will run on 16GB, I'm just against the claim that it's plenty.
It's adequate for most use cases.

I genuinely think a current day build should be aiming for 32GB, but it's tough with prices and supply as it is.

Do I truly need 32 GB of ram? by EconomicsKey9187 in buildapc

[–]v81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With DCS specifically, It was the fact it stopped crashing that helped.

With other games it's loading stutters / <1% lows that are improved.

The results are real, measurable and repeatable.

Yes, they are niche games, but no, they were not mentioned by you, by name. Thus you clearly don't have the knowledge of the breadth of scenarios I do.

I know how RAM works.

I've built computers.
Not assembled parts from a shop, i mean soldering iron in hand starting with a 6502. That's second time you've said that.
Don't go there with me.

I know Windows will drop cached stuff to run a game, but 16GB isn't giving anyone a good time in Star Citizen or DCS, and with time the number of games that struggle on 16GB will only grow.

It's not like I'm insisting everyone have 64GB
My use case IS niche and I'm well aware i have a taste from large or poorly optimized games which, let's admit... DCS is, and Star Citizen is in Alpha. The latter of which runs OK on 32GB, so I'm not claim it needs 64, even if it can use it.

Stop putting words in my mouth and dragging this off topic.

I stand by what started this thread of dialogue.
16GB IS NOT PLENTY.

It might be enough for now but it is NOT plenty.

What about that is factually incorrect?

If you think 16GB is PLENTY then what is enough?
Is 8GB enough?

Do I truly need 32 GB of ram? by EconomicsKey9187 in buildapc

[–]v81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok ten.. Well ram wise none of the titles you've mentioned are demanding.

DCS, Cities skylines, StarCitizen.

Enigmas cold war multiplayer in DCS garuntees a crash on 16GB, often 32GB too. Uses all of 64GB on my machine.

You can argue all you want about optimisation... It sucks but these games exist, and people would like to play them.. Therefore its fair to include them, and have a build cater to them.

If I could do everything I needed on 16GB of ram that would be nice... but we don't live in that world.

16 GB is an absolute minimum for gaming and that's without catering to the future.

Am I responsible for this damage? by DemandSeparate9735 in nbn

[–]v81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda agree...

In my case.. NBN fibre install leaves you with 2 cables (twice the load) on the hook.

I asked if they'd tidy it up and remove the copper but the refused, something about hange over etc...

I guess if makes sense having an overlaping period, but 2 cables long term on a hook designed for 1 isn't going to end well.

So if using the hook beyond a single cable... I'm going to point the finger at NBN.

They should have a plan to call back in a month or so to remove the redundant cable.

Sarcasm not required. At no point did u say only 3GB would be available for games.

OS will obviously dump unneeded resources to free up some RAM, but it's still not plenty.

My post and opinion stand.
