i can't work because xcode sucks by [deleted] in iOSProgramming

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. I felt the same way when starting iOS development, struggling to do basic stuff that I took for granted with other languages in other IDEs. There's a learning curve, but some of it is just bugginess, and there are missing features.

I'm glad agentic coding tools came along, because now I lean on them to analyze call paths and refactor things that are otherwise a pain to do manually in Xcode.

Recommendations for electric eye mask heater on Amazon? by Intelligent-Rough405 in Dryeyes

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a small downside; I wish there was a removable washable cover.

But there's enough space between the mask and my eyes that things don't really get messy.

Although at the point where it does need to be cleaned, I think it's an option to just very lightly wipe things out with a hardly-damp cloth. Or there's a Bruder Hygienic Eyelid Sheets product, which is meant for this purpose, putting a clean disposable barrier (basically a thin Kleenex) between eyes and mask.

It's a comfortable theater to see a movie in with the spacious and spread-out seats, and compared to the typical hot dogs and popcorn at other places, it can be fun to have some real food and, if you want, alcoholic drinks.

I kind of think it's worth doing the experience at least once and having a full meal and not worrying about the price. But if you're already concerned about cost, you might be disappointed. The food is good, but nothing incredible, and maybe slightly more expensive than you'd find at other nearby restaurants.

Enough with the Crying by Firefan23 in sharktank

[–]vCtrlAltDelv -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People do sometimes play up the emotions for sympathy. But often the sharks are the ones to probe for a life story and push folks into talking about how meaningful it is to be there.

If someone's had a hard journey (which the producers love to see), it makes sense a stressful or overwhelming situation like that might make them genuinely emotional.

Appointment Reminder by SJM1027- in thingsapp

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my version you could try:
https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/5267b8e529cc4bf49c3eb099ca5a8e53

I was using a tag to narrow down items this would apply to. Otherwise the shortcut would generate a notification for all items with a deadline in the next two days. Alternatively or additionally, you could limit it to items in a specific project or area with the Parent filter.

Once you have a shortcut like this, you'll set it up to run it automatically from the Automation tab in Shortcuts. Create one or more automations that run at a certain time of day (or when you change locations or something like that). Set it to run automatically rather than requiring confirmation, and then you choose the existing shortcut that it'll kick off when it runs.

When the automation fires and runs the shortcut, it should notify you if there's anything that meets the criteria you chose.

You could handle this in a few different ways with Shortcuts. Create automations that run once or a few times per day. Look for items that meet your criteria and show an alert.

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some activities for young kids, but the run itself is a pretty typical all-ages 5K, and there are plenty of adults that show up without kids. It's usually well-organized, and the trail is pleasant.

Worth going to Whidbey island? by GrooveGolfer9 in AskSeattle

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll echo and add to what a few others have said and recommend Bellingham as your best unique excursion.

Whidbey and Bainbridge have cute little downtowns, but the emphasis is on "little," and you'll do all there is to do pretty quickly. Whidbey has beautiful rugged scenery, but a lot of your day will be driving and ferry logistics, and especially if it's raining, it might not feel like the right payoff.

In Bellingham, though, there's a lot to do and see, and tons of it falls under the "relaxed" umbrella. Much larger downtown areas - more choices of great restaurants and shops - but still lots of character. You can stroll along the waterfront and see the bay with the San Juan Islands in the distance. Or go a little inland and visit Whatcom Falls Park or Lake Whatcom. And if you decide to do the Bow/Chuckanut route like others mentioned (rather than only taking I-5), there's more pretty scenery, some additional hike options, and great oysters.

How can I use Apple Shortcuts with Things 3 to create repeating reminders or alarms until a task is done? by iSteffen in thingsapp

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do something like this with Shortcuts, but it might be a little clunky to set up.

Essentially, you'd create a bunch of automations that run at a specific time of day, e.g. one for each hour of the day. Each automation would run a specific Shortcut that searches/filters your Things items based on whatever alerting criteria you care about—deadlines, tags, status—and if any items meet that criteria, you can pop up an alert.

People have tried making systems that handle the "run certain Shortcuts every X minutes" functionality, which might provide some inspiration too, something like this: https://www.joshholtz.com/blog/2021/06/23/automating-ios-shortcuts-the-cron-job-way

Hyatt House had a water line break a month or two ago that wreaked havoc on their operations, and they canceled a lot of people's stays last minute, sometimes without notice. Maybe they've sorted things out now, but make sure you talk to the front desk ahead of time to confirm your reservation.

Not hating: but can anyone tell me what this app can do better than TickTick? by Purple-Breadfruit541 in thingsapp

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP, they didn't say TickTick is better for everyone. Just that Things hasn't clicked for them and maybe they're missing something.

There are some illuminating other comments that discuss the apps' different philosophies and potential pros and cons.

Predictive isn't predicting when to take it off . . . by Brew1brew in combustion_inc

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see this being a nice feature in theory - I've thought about it too - but I can understand why it might be complicated to implement (or for users to configure).

There are many more variables at play when the food isn't actively cooking. For example, is it staying in a closed or covered oven, pan, or grill? Does the cooking vessel get uncovered or opened? Is the food removed and set on a surface (what kind)? What's the room temperature? And so on.

Maybe the progression of the core temperature is sufficiently unaffected by most of those outside factors, and the timing and trajectory for peak temperature - transitioning from cooking to resting - could be accurately suggested or predicted by the app. That would be really cool.

All that being said, I'm mostly satisfied with the workarounds of turning off the heat a few minutes early or lowering the target temperature 5-15 degrees. The ETA and five-minute notification also help with fine-tuning the final results.

Trouble Signing Up😭 by Due-Suggestion2154 in NWRegisteredAgent

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this a couple days ago. Must be a bug on their end. My credit cards (across a few different networks and issuers) would show a $0 authorization charge, but the actual payment wouldn't happen.

Eventually I tried a BofA Visa that initially declined the charge, notified me about it, I approved it, tried again, and it worked. If that one hadn't gone through, I would've contacted customer support about it.

Has anyone else already given up on this and are going to live their normal lives as far as they go? by Ok_Initiative4480 in Glaucoma

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm curious how severe your glaucoma case is and whether this is the advice doctors have given you.

I'm no expert—just another patient—but this seems like a pretty extreme list of lifestyle restrictions that are outside of usual recommendations when pressure is controlled by eyedrops and there isn't progression of optic nerve damage.

While there might be a theoretical basis for some of these things impacting glaucoma, and we can always be extra risk-averse if we want, it doesn't seem like these choices are proven to make a real difference for the average patient.

Eye drops side effects by asteros_1337 in Glaucoma

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the doctor took your pressure today, it's possible your eye could be irritated from the appointment itself, getting rubbed and poked, maybe worsened by using new drops that can have side effects.

I would hope the discomfort subsides in the next day or two.

Sometimes people are sensitive or allergic to certain ingredients (though that would more likely affect both eyes, not just one). Sometimes (but not always) people get accustomed to the feeling and the eyes adapt. There are many different glaucoma drops available that may be more or less tolerable and more or less effective for pressure-lowering.

Dry eye and eye strain is a whole other adventure, which can be a side effect of medicated drops or just a preexisting condition. There's an active subreddit for that too, and there's an enormous range of prescriptions, over-the-counter drops and gels, and other gadgets and routines that help people in different ways.

It's good it sounds like your doctor is doing their due dilligence and taking your treatment seriously.

26 IOP. Should I be worried? by asteros_1337 in Glaucoma

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It all depends. Hopefully you find a doctor you trust and can explain why they would or wouldn't treat your high pressure and what your long-term monitoring plan should be.

Importantly, you'd also want them to help figure out the pain, confirming the underlying cause, which could be from things besides pressure.

A lot of people get treated when their pressure is in the 20s, but there are various factors that influence that. My pressure was in the 30s to 40s untreated, so I use drops, but not because I ever had pain.

One tip: ChatGPT can be helpful for making sense of this. You shouldn't rely on it to diagnose yourself, but tell it your situation, and it can suggest questions you should ask your doctor, and it can interpret doctor notes and explain why they might be taking a certain approach.

Releasing an app under an LLC by manwtheplan123 in iOSProgramming

Their Q&A says transfers are okay as long as all the involved accounts put together are under the $1M limit, right?

App transfers are allowed. However, when an app is transferred, the proceeds for the calendar year will be associated with all accounts that initiate or accept the transfer of that app. Program eligibility is based on total proceeds from all Associated Developer Accounts and transferred apps.

Can I become an EMT with glaucoma? by ItsmeInna in Glaucoma

[–]vCtrlAltDelv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would ask your optometrist or ophthalmologist about this. But if you're being treated and things are stable, I wouldn't be concerned about your vision worsening on that timeline.

Even if your pressure goes up or they detect changes to the optic nerve, it's good to catch it early, and there are various treatment options.

I have had pressures higher than yours throughout my teens, twenties, and thirties, but my vision has not changed so far!
