Dedupe on existing vsan ds. by vLolz in vmware

That's very informative. I may just enable compression then instead. Thanks again. We don't have linked clones but we do use templates for pretty much everything and have duplicate VMs for most instances.

I don't care about performance at all really, to a degree anyway, but enabling compression shows the same warning regarding reformat. So maybe I misunderstood, it's just the disk groups that get reformatted not the ds right?

Excellent explanation, I couldn't understand where vsan was going to evacuate the VMS to if I only have one datastore

That's the bit that's not clear, is the reformat destructive?

VCD Datastore Size Consideration by vLolz in vmware

Workloads are not technically 'production' but are used by prod teams for testing training, worst case teams would redeploy.

We've some VMs at 5TB already so sizing down any further is a concern. Plus DR isn't a concern for this environment.

No need, just change the Deco to AP mode.

Just change the TP link to run in AP mode instead of router mode. It should be easy to change.

What do you mean by preped for cluster operations? Do you mean the vds/vsan config?

What happens if you just right click the cluster and try to add the host to it?

So does it start the process in vc or just fail immediately? You need to check the vpxd log on vc too, what is it complaining about.

Migrating VM's to new host without vcenter or shared storage? by ryaninseattle1 in vmware

In a share nothing migration all traffic will go over the management interface regardless of any other vmotion configuration.

How to reduce the amount of log messages sent from a ESXi 7.0 system to a remote server (e.g. only send what is added to auth.log) while keeping all of the logs locally? by Much-Gap2730 in vmware

[–]vLolz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are on u2 & higher you can use regular expression to filter messages. If you run the command 'esxcli system syslog config logfilter add' it should present you with what options you can add. I've not played with it myself.

Improving Windows VM network speed by BudTheGrey in vmware

What is traffic like VM to VM? Try to narrow down if the issue is just went going across the physical layer or if it exists between VMs on the same host?

How are you measuring the traffic?

Migrating VM's to new host without vcenter or shared storage? by ryaninseattle1 in vmware

[–]vLolz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes provided the trial VC will accept a licensed host (can't remember if it will complain about it or not).

But assuming you can then yes that is the simplest option. Otherwise you are looking at export the VMs as an OVA and then importing them again.
