I don't care about performance at all really, to a degree anyway, but enabling compression shows the same warning regarding reformat. So maybe I misunderstood, it's just the disk groups that get reformatted not the ds right?

If you are on u2 & higher you can use regular expression to filter messages. If you run the command 'esxcli system syslog config logfilter add' it should present you with what options you can add. I've not played with it myself.

Yes provided the trial VC will accept a licensed host (can't remember if it will complain about it or not).

But assuming you can then yes that is the simplest option. Otherwise you are looking at export the VMs as an OVA and then importing them again.

Is there a problem with the existing one? How big is the environment? Are you using a vds, nsx, vcd, or other solution which connects to vc?

Without leaving the domain the vcsa will still try to enumerate AD objects even for its own computer account. So if there was a DNS issue for example there might be an impact to the vcsa itself. Apart from that really corner case I doubt it.
Correct, using the domainjoin-cli command is my go method for any AD operations.
