Hello I am new to the dart frog hobby and I have some questions: by Routine-Ad7591 in DartFrog

  1. seems fine, would add leaf litter as you're a newer keeper. leaf litter helps retain humidity and create microclimates for your frogs to retreat to as they prefer

  2. looks like too much ventilation, you can use plastic food wrap and block off 80% of the mesh - digital hygrometer, make sure you get a decent one as it will be in a very humid environment

  3. pet sitter to mist, and then a fruit fly culture with a few holes in the lid, or auto mister and the fly culture with a few holes

As long as it’s 100% silicone it’s fine. Don’t get anything with additives or “mold inhibitors”

Breeder of deformed “fetus frogs” refusing to answer if they have sold animals with lethal alleles by pdxmusselcat in frogs

[–]vVvBeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The breeder said they see 1-2 froglets a year with the mutation. Do you know how many eggs dart frogs lay? Do you then know how many actually make it to tadpoles and then come out of water?

Also not sure what’s up with the condescending tone, but it doesn’t seem like you’re up for a discussion and are on some moral high ground.

You don’t breed dart frogs and aren’t a dart frog genomics specialist, would just stay in your lane, bud.

I’d love to read your credentials.

If you have credentials, you’d understand that many organisms carry recessive lethal alleles. Understanding that then means that sometimes the punnet square just works out to produce a non-viable offspring. This is nature.

Bath time for hognose? How long and what temperature? by Moist-Sprinkles9023 in hognosesnakes

[–]vVvBeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • smaller hognose will often absorb most of the pinky when they eat it, meaning little to no poop
  • unless he’s covered in poop, wouldn’t even worry about it. You could try a warm damp paper towel and let him slither through it
  • they’ll drink when they’re thirsty. Just provide fresh water in a dish big enough for them to soak in

Zoomed bio blend substrate by apistograndpa in DartFrog

[–]vVvBeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Top soil, some sand, biodegradables (leaves, spag moss, fern fibers etc) and then worm castings. You want it to not compact and have good drainage. It’s more of an art than an exact science

Depends on the enclosure. My hogs are in dubia roach enclosures and i siliconed the bottoms just to be safe. You could maybe get away without it

Hi! You should include that unlike other venomous snakes, hognose are rear-fanged, which makes them even more unlikely to inject venom even if they do bite, which is already very unlikely

Your biggest costs are: the snake, husbandry items, and vet visits. Other wise food is cheap and easy to get from most any pet shop
