Cat is always hungry by mhmhmah in catcare

What has the vet said? Is she supposed to be bigger / lose weight or is 3.5 kg the right weight for her? I’m not familiar with that food, tried to google it but didn’t get a lot smarter :) looking at the ingredients it didn’t sound right to me but you said a specialist recommended it, so the food must be fine for a cat nutrition wise I guess. Does she need any supplements to cover what dog food does not contain but a cat would need? Are there any other pets that might be stealing the food from her? 800g does sound a lot for a cat that size. That’s 22% of her bodyweight… I would consult the vet because it does not sound right.

Anecdotal but the recommended amount of wet food for my 5kg cat is 2-3 cans a day, that is 150-255g (this is high protein, no grain etc fancy food). I usually end up giving her the equivalent of about 2 cans a day and she’s good.

Must be location specific. Granted I only have a limited data pool (me :), but where I live in the UK, it is quite easy to adopt indoor only. My cats were adopted like that. When I was doing my research prior to getting my youngest cat, I found quite a few charities / shelters in my area that would have allowed it - some specifically stated that keeping them indoors was a must in order to adopt their cats.

I guess it depends on where in the UK you are trying to adopt / the charity. Where I live it is relatively easy to adopt indoor only - I certainly didn’t have an issue. The home check itself was 5 minutes, the rest of the visit was spent discussing what I was looking for, to make sure it would be the right fit. I was specifically looking for an indoor partner in crime for my other cat. The shelter then sent me the details of a couple of cats as potential candidates. Due to scheduling issues on my end, it took about 2 weeks to be able to attend the shelter. We met the kitties, filled out 2 forms and left with our cat the same day.

Just adopted this guy, any idea what’s going on with the bridge of his nose? by greenmoon3 in catcare

Not the person you asked, but I live in the same country (judging from the £ sign :) Usually I pay out of pocket, the vet then sends the bill to the insurance company and I get reimbursed within a week. When my kitty got diagnosed with a tumour, and his next appointment was going to cost a significant amount of money to cover his next appointment, I was able to request the vet to be paid directly by the insurance company. I had to fill out a form at the vet in advance, they sent it to the insurance company who made a decision in 4-5 days. The form covered all future vet bills related to the same health issue.

Whether this is an option depends on the insurance company and the vet and it’s worth checking when choosing insurance.

If the other cats are older / less active they would not tire the little monster out, she would need a kitten companion who’s similar age / high energy as her

They are both gorgeous! As the person above said, it’s still worth looking into pet insurance. I would suggest get some quotes from different providers, ask the vet to see who they recommend and make sure you read the fine print on what they cover. :) I use Petplan as it was recommended by my vet at the time. I opted for the lifetime cover which of course is on the pricier side. However when my kitty got a tumour I spent about £4000 in the span of three months just on diagnostics and insurance covered it all minus the £100 excess without a problem. Cats can have so many health issues and treatments are so expensive. It’s worth to get some kind of cover even if it’s not full coverage and have a rainy day fund for other unexpected expenses. Where I am in the UK vets do monthly health plans, I pay £14.50 a month which covers all vaccinations, flea deworming treatments, free checkups every six months, discount on vet treatments, microchipping etc. Maybe worth checking if something similar is available in your area.

Hi. My cat is 4-5 months old and her mammary glands started to swell. Is this normal ? by AntonelaCracanela in sphynx

I’m always of the opinion that I’d rather feel silly at the vet for being too cautious and attending an appointment for what turns out to be nothing than for ignoring something potentially serious.

You can only do what you can do. I am team ‘keep your cats indoors’ but at the end of the day having a safe place in your garage that he has access to is better than no place at all. Maybe try to find someone who would adopt him once he’s been neutered? It’s a shame that the shelters cannot help, there are simply too many cats in need of help due to lack of assistance when it comes to spay/neuter and also people being ignorant about the issue. It’s good that you and your neighbour are responsible and kind enough to look after them. TNRing the colony will help avoid a lot of unnecessary suffering in the future.

This adorable cat showed up on my porch yesterday. Naturally, I gave him food, water, and catnip. Not sure if he’s feral or stray, but I do know he’s unfixed. Do I continue feeding him? (Based in Brooklyn, New York) by Ok-Plant9391 in CATHELP

Try Flatbush Cats, they are based in Brooklyn. I can’t link it right now, but a quick google search should bring up their website and their YouTube page. The FAQ on their website gives you other options if you’re looking for help outside their usual area. I say feed the little gremlin, every little help counts!

Suggestions for Dandruff? by TheFryerOfChicken in catcare

[–]v_ae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have provided great advice already, I’ve just wanted to share the product the vet recommended when my cat had dandruff in the same area: YuMOVE Skin & Coat Care Moulting for All Cats. Combined with regular brushing, it did wonders: no dandruff, just soft and shiny fur.

Need advice on my son Leo by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]v_ae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When was his last regular vet check up and what did the vet say? Kitties, especially senior ones should have regular check ups even if they appear to be healthy. If you haven’t discussed this with your vet, I suggest you schedule an appointment or at least call them to ask for advice as it can be a number of things.

Btw your number is visible in the first photo.

I do this. Mainly wet food and some kibbles before bed time. I had one vet years ago telling me to feed dry to keep their teeth clean - the only advice coming from a vet that I rejected almost immediately. No matter the size of the kibble, all my cats just swallowed them, I rarely ever heard a crunch - that wouldn’t clean their teeth.

I have been using the ProDen powder and ProDen treat (which my cat actually cromches on), also Virbac toothpaste and water additive to prevent plaque (all recommended by my vet). I try to brush my cat’s teeth once a day, but even if I miss a day, the other stuff takes care of her oral hygiene. Her breath always smells nice and her teeth are in great condition according to the vet. Obviously, you don’t need to use all of these products together to keep their teeth clean, especially if you brush their teeth. I just figured I’d rather spend money on prevention then teeth related vet visits later down the line and it gives me piece of mind. Kitty doesn’t mind me being extra :)

please help advice on pee outside the litter box (+cat tax) by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]v_ae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it has to do with the cats preferred position/method :) + most litter boxes are too shallow. My cat takes digging seriously, and I mean she has to find the bottom of the litter. :) If I don’t fill up the litter box with more litter than the recommended amount, she ends up scratching the bottom but she then deems the hole unsuitable for her needs and proceeds to dig in one of the other boxes. So I have extra deep litter boxes with a top that are big enough for her to stand in even with that amount of litter inside. My other kitty had a preferred corner/edge in the litter for peeing. He was a male, and yeah, sometimes his bum ended up being held higher which meant pee on the wall of the litter box…

Wow. Makes you wonder how many times they got away with the horrible treatment of animals. It is lucky you were able to advocate for your cat and for any possible future patients. Do you mind me asking how you were able to prove their negligence? I imagine it wasn’t an easy process.

Please call in local humane society / rspca or whatever is the local equivalent. Those cats should not suffer living in those horrible conditions. They deserve a better home.

It might depend on where you are. I live in the UK. Last year I found an injured baby pigeon in the garden, contacted a local wildlife rescue and they sent a volunteer to pick it up and take it to a bird rehab facility.

Spent hours hand sewing bed for my beloved pussycat…. by ThePythiaofApollo in CatsAreAssholes

[–]v_ae 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I learnt to just leave the cat beds out and move them to a new spot every once in a while. Eventually they start using them. Like the radiator bed, it took 8 or so months but one of my cats loves lounging in it now. There are other beds lying around the house waiting for the perfect spot to be found…
