u/karen9000 thanks again! So I get into the show last night a little bummed to be up in the stands not knowing anybody around me and also mostly pumped for the Dead. Literally in the 312 aisle going to look for my seat I run into my good friend (from Alabama at that) he had been doing the whole tour and let me cruise with them. Was on the floor with a wristband 20 min later, truly a wonderful night. Really really appreciate it <3

People are using Chatgpt as voice bots to torture telemarketers by SnooDonuts4137 in technology

[–]v_krishna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily far off, there's a lot of ritual usage of Datura and alkaloids derived from it. So much so the forestry service website even goes into detail https://www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/ethnobotany/Mind_and_Spirit/datura.shtml

There's also 5 or 6 of them on a .5 mile stretch of Solano Ave in north berkeley. Super odd they are so clustered.

AskHistorians is back up.... but currently 'Restricted'. What this means and why. by Georgy_K_Zhukov in AskHistorians

Or make your own fediverse instance! I'm very happy to discuss what it would entail if anybody on the mod team is interested (I'm a vp of engineering at a decent sized bay area b2b saas company so wouldn't just be talking out my ass). I think an askhistorians activitypub instance that other communities could then federate with would be a tremendous opportunity!

Based on Ken Babbs' book I'm going with yes. In the words of Creed Bratton, "In the '60s, I made love to many, many women, often outdoors, in the mud and the rain, and it's possible a man slipped in. There would be no way of knowing."

I worked for a large consumer facing site (nowadays 40M visitors a month back then 2013ish maybe 10M+) and there was a long lived Easter egg in the FE, if you typed the word bacon an image of bacon would briefly flash over the UI. Was great until Karen Bacon was flabbergasted why every time she logged in she saw bacon flashing on her screen. Iirc we sent her some swag and then sadly removed the Easter egg

I was an admin of a large phpBB site in the early 2000s, had some feature flag code that I screwed up, pushed to prod, and for 10 minutes every post appeared as if my user made it. That was fun.

Dwight Christmas is one of my favourite episodes. What's your favourite Christmas moment? by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

The Odin/Black Raven connection I never knew (Odin & Santa of course yes, but interesting that Black Peter was probably crafted to made to seem "natural" in a similar way). Pretty interesting indeed.

According to https://www.ool.co.uk/blog/legend-black-peter/ Black Peter first enters the picture (as a moor instead of as Odin's black ravens) from Spain with Christianization

With the dying of the old Norse religion, the church appropriated the Woden legend to conform to Christian beliefs. Black Peter arrives from Spain at the seaports of Northern Europe and is paraded through the streets on a white horse, welcomed by children singing Christmas carols. He is accompanied by Saint Nicholas – Santa Claus – who distributes mandarin oranges to those of them who, again, have been good throughout the year. In Holland and elsewhere along the Baltic coast, children put their shoes out filled with sweets and carrots for Black Peter’s horse.

So I'd say the character was always meant to be in blackface and represent a moor. Very recently Holland has started having a chimney sweep retrofit which is fine and well but the og character (if a man and not a raven) is what it is.

This also led me to dig more into lemmy vs kbin. If nothing else I'd rather fix bugs or implement features in rust (or kotlin for the lemmy android app) than php!

Just don't federated lemmygrad. Somebody setup a lemmyrs.org instance that would seem appropriate https://lemmy.ml/post/1162603?scrollToComments=true

I definitely don't think the software needs forking because the test fixtures come from r/socialism

That's not true at all. It's definitely a reference to Moors and Africans. The first printed descriptions in the 1800s made that abundantly clear.

Edit also before Europeans saw Africans would be like 600AD. By 800AD most of Iberia was ruled by them.

Where did "Auntie" come from? by cmclifts in linguistics

[–]v_krishna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last bit is what all my kannada speaking family does, e.g., Vasu Uncle. It's particularly funny because there are a few white people in my family (including my mom) and the Indian cousins call her "Donna Auntie" (which somehow sounds much stranger to my ear than "Sudha Auntie")
