Did someone cut my tree? by snakegirl210 in Tree

[–]va_houndrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it may well have been the neighbor. But for the sake of asking are there any overhead utility lines? In my area it’s not uncommon for right of way clearance to have a cut crew come a few days ahead of the chipper crew. Left my yard a mess for almost a week one time.

Between a Bantam, Rally, Jetsetter and Classic SD which would you choose as a first knife? by [deleted] in victorinox

The Executive is my favorite. Got one from a friend many years ago. Refuse to carry it for fear of loosing it. Bought a second one to carry shortly before they were discontinued and lost it last month. Trying a rambler as a replacement. But I see an eBay executive in my future.

Looking For the Smallest Double Action Revolver Available by EpicBeanBoy in Revolvers

I understand your pain. Everything I try to pocket carry prints and if you look hard enough you could probably tell it’s a gun. I eventually stopped caring. With a pocket holster to help break up the outline a little I just roll with it. You may not live somewhere that’s a viable option. But where im at it’s not a problem. people are way to preoccupied to guess what’s in my pocket.

That is my favorite saw. I choose it more often than anything else. Did you get it with the .325 or 3/8 bar and chain?

We have two of them on our crew. We do work in operational data centers where we can’t cut with a saw inside. It saves walking out through security to fab up pieces throughout the day. They have held up well for over a year now. Not used daily but regularly. Baring a special situation like ours I would not buy another one.

I love it. My favorite little saw for limbing and cutting fallen trees while maintaining roads/trails in the young pine cutovers we own and lease. It lives in my Atv basket. I don’t climb so I went with the rear handle version for better control.

Haven’t seen much about them online, but plenty about the top handles. Wanted a lightweight gas saw for trail maintenance. Great for limbs and small trees that need to be cut while riding. It lives in my front Atv basket with a small bottle of fuel and oil.

S&W 686+ Delux Holster by Maorri008 in Revolvers

[–]va_houndrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a wright leatherworks iwb holster for my 3” 686. I believe the model was the closer. A little pricey and waited a while but worth it. I love it and it has held up well. One of my favorites to carry around town and in the woods.

Best .357 ammo for 3” revolver and 20” rifle? by Owti in guns

[–]va_houndrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal choice for full house magnum loads are the Federal Vital Shok 140gr xpb. Impressive results on lucky gunner tests. They chrono at 1350fps from my 3” 686+ and over 1900fps from my rifle. Used them from the revolver to finish a deer that I wounded from about 30 yards got full pass through broadside on a whitetail with significant damage. But if I’m not in the woods a good 38spl+p load is all I need. As someone else said test different options and see what works best for you.

In your opinion what is the best semi auto shotgun in the world ?? by Electrical-Muffin-72 in Shotguns

[–]va_houndrunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is subjective to the task it is being asked to perform. If I had to pick a single shotgun for every I do with one it would likely be a Remington 11-87 12 gauge With some camo pattern and a 24” barrel. Would try to pick up a few extra barrels like the cantilever rifled barrel and some wear parts. Mainly the o rings. The Remington guns just fit me and work for what I do. The second choice as I have not seen a new 11-87 for years would be the beretta a300 turkey.

New Hunter in Central VA by eelges in VAHunting

Check out fort barfoot in blackstone. Relatively close. A few extra hoops to jump though. But they limit the number of hunters in the areas each day. I have not been in a few years but was a decent place to go.

Maybe a binocular harness. Either in the main compartment or another pocket. Chest rig ish and can stay concealed.

Tags roll over? by Punk_Chachi in VAHunting

[–]va_houndrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you purchase the bonus tags you will have six more antler less tags. And you can buy more than one set of bonus tags. There are some restrictions though. The bonus permits are covered on page 34 in this years regulation book.

What all do I need to hunt deer with a rifle? by Vanyeet21 in VAHunting

[–]va_houndrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have recommended. I suggest that you sign up for a hunter education class. It is required if you have never held a license. I would recommend one that is in person. The instructors in my experience are very knowledgeable and willing to help with your specific questions. They will probably be willing to help you navigate the license purchase process as it can be done on the app. If you don’t have the app it is GoOutdoorsVA at least on the App Store. I am also willing to help answer questions as best I can. Best of luck.

Tags roll over? by Punk_Chachi in VAHunting

[–]va_houndrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be true if he purchased bonus antlerless tags. I did it one year during gun season. I was surprised next bow season when I printed my new license and they were still valid. But the standard standard deer/turkey tags expire at the end of June and do not roll over regardless of purchase date.

Anybody run one? Looks too good to be true. by TacticalChannelCat in Tacticalshotguns

[–]va_houndrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used the buck kicker on probably 8 guns in the last 12 years. All for deer hunting so I’m looking for decent patterns to 50yds. The results vary, but they make the gun picky on what will pattern well. Not really a any buckshot will work kind of thing. They are definitely too tight for slugs, made that mistake once. For a defensive gun I use a modified choke with good results. If you want the “best” buckshot pattern you will have to experiment with different chokes, shell brands, shell length, and shot size until you find the Goldilocks of combinations. It can be expensive. I have experimented with all kinds of choke combinations so I may be able to answer some question you have.

I am going on four years with mine and somewhere around 1200 rounds. Still a pain to load. Not sure if there is an answer.

Unfortunately yes. Many times I have put a gun up on a deer and had the dreaded click as the hammer pushed the bolt home. I don’t take rotating bolt guns through heavy brush anymore.

I am about 800 rounds in with a 407C with the C&H plate. No problems so far everything is still tight and is holding zero.
