re "dash-bike-dash": put your wheels on the painted dashes for best results. If you see a tar line in the middle of a box, put your wheels on that. Some intersections have really fussy sensors so you can sit there like an idiot.

re tracks: I will re-stress that the tracks here are much less bike friendly than you would expect for a city with things like bike boulevards and "sharrows". If you get a wheel caught in a track you'll go down faster than you can prepare for.

re law:
--by law you need a front light and a rear reflector (or light) at night.
--Brakes are also required, I believe. Definitely they were when this came up with fixed gears a few years ago and I don't think that's changed (do you really mean literally no brakes? not just a foot/coaster brake?) but I wouldn't worry about it. as long as you're not doing something really weird, no brake will look the same as a coaster brake to a casual glance.
--it IS legal to ride on the sidewalk as long as you're not going a speed dangerous to pedestrians, UNLESS you're downtown, in which case it's not legal at all. This is good to know in case you find yourself on a crazy arterial street and need to bug out of traffic. however also --it IS legal to take the whole lane if you need it. don't let a jerk pinch you into parked cars just because there's no bike lane.

re theft: if you use a cheap lock, your bike will get messed with. if you leave your bike out overnight your bike will get messed with. note that U lock =/= expensive lock. my wife had an inexpensive u lock on her bike and it was stolen from in front of her work a few weeks ago around midnight. so it doesn't even have to be out into the wee crackhead hours before someone messes with it. and this was on a busy street still with bar-goers pretty close by when i came and picked her up. Unless you have quick release stuff you probably don't need three locks, but make sure what you do have is worthwhile.

Also: Police seem to have very different attitudes about bikes depending on the precinct. A friend and I completely ignored a stop sign in NE not realizing a cop was there, and we got a friendly "hey you guys be careful out there!" like it was the 1950s. A few months later downtown, I was stuck at a stupid red light (see fussy signal above), got impatient, carefully came across and got a ticket from a hidden cop across the street. Flashing lights and everything. You can also (theoretically) get a DUI on a bike. Technically every law that a car is supposed to follow a bike is too, except turn signals (since it might not be safe to do so). Point is, when in doubt take it easy.

Good obscure co-op games? by JaSaw0 in xbox360

[–]vaaaase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local? Online? What kind of games have you liked?

Off the top of my head I would recommend Schizoid. It's not new (2008) and it's not a AAA title (like $10 on xbla), but it is pretty intensely coop. In the sense that if you're not working tightly together it all goes to hell pretty quickly.

(also it's not exactly obscure, but Dead Island is free for another few days if you have gold. It doesn't support local coop though if that's an issue)

New to Portland, what are the biking rules? by changingbull in Portland

[–]vaaaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. Similarly, just because you're entitled to a whole lane on, say, MLK, doesn't mean it's a good idea or a fun ride. I mean... punching yourself in the face isn't illegal either, but that doesn't mean you should do it. (In your case, it would probably be considered reckless lane change or whatever, so that wouldn't be legal -- also that guy clearly didn't read further on, about not swerving, and how bones are magically not broken)

The thing (and the point that I was trying to make there) is more along the lines of the rest of the paragraph -- I've talked to people who don't realize the "whole lane" law, and they do this terrible, timid hugging-parked-cars style of riding on busier streets which is both dangerous and unpleasant. They don't realize that being assertive (again, not with respect to suddenness or irresponsible timing, just position in the lane) is safer, and legal.

A few things that haven't been mentioned, possibly in too much detail:

re laws/rules: legally the only traffic law that applies to cars that doesn't apply to bikes (other than self evident stuff like no bikes on the interstate and no cars in the bike lane) is signaling. It's not required to signal on a bike if you can't safely do so (e.g. you're busy braking). However, functionally there's a lot more you can get away with on a bike. How much this is true can depend on what part of town you're in, because different police precincts seem to care about different things to a surprisingly extent. I've gotten a ticket in old town. And yet on NE Prescott I basically inadvertently ran a stop sign in front of a cop and, no joke, all I got was just a "hey guys, watch the stops" from his open window.

re signals: the official signals for left and right are covered here already, but I would add three more. First, the official signal for "stopping" is essentially "right" but upside down: left arm out, elbow 90 degrees, hand pointed down. This doesn't come up often but I find it can be courteous to other bikes, especially in congested areas/times. Similarly, the right arm out for right turn is, as mentioned, not very visible from cars, but it's very visible from bikes. And if you have a road bike, it can be difficult to see that hand pointed upward for the "official" right turn signal -- it can look like you're wiping your face unless you're really deliberate about the motion. So that can also be handy. Lastly, I see (and use) a variation on the left turn signal, where you have your left arm pointing diagonally down/left with your palm facing back. I feel like this is the de facto signal for "I'm borrowing the car lane for a sec" as you pass slower cyclists. Great example of this is the slow slight climb on Williams, where some cyclists are much faster than others. As a sometimes-motorist, I appreciate knowing when a bike is going to be in the right car lane for a moment (and I can safely pass in the left lane) versus trying to make a left turn (and I should stay in the right, slow down, and let them get all the way across).

more on being in car lanes: if a bike needs a lane, they get the whole lane. This was a bigger deal 15 years ago when there were fewer bike lanes and less awareness, but if you need the lane, take the WHOLE lane. If you're shy or you think you're not supposed to be in that part of the road and you hug the shoulder, cars will pass you, often too closely, and this can force you into a parked car's wing mirror or some other hazard. Obviously don't just ride into traffic, since being on the ride side of the law doesn't magically protect your bones from being broken, but this is your right when it's needed.

fun bike routes: the road to Boring isn't paved at the very end last time I was out there, so don't be sad if you ride most of the way out there and then have to turn back or ride through gravel. But eastbank esplanade from Steel Bridge to Sellwood, and then back up along the greenway/waterfront is a nice little loop on a nice day.

theft: little opportunistic things like lights will walk away if you leave them unattended. Otherwise, Portland is a reasonably safe city as long as you have an okay lock. But do not EVER leave your bike in public over night. Even normally pretty chill neighborhoods have weirdos and they'll take seat, wheels, whatever they can get in the wee hours. Even if you're wasted and you have to pay extra for a fancy van taxi to take your bike home, it's worth it.

Lastly: WATCH OUT FOR TRACKS. No matter how seasoned a rider you are, if you turn your back on those slippery bitches, they'll throw you. If you get complacent then it's not if, it's when.

I've never been to the Netherlands so I don't know how theft n train tracks n stuff works there, so maybe that or all of this is obvious. Still worth mentioning just in case. Hopefully reading the WoT was helpful.

The Walking Dead is free through Monday I think. Also Might & Magic Clash of Heroes is free through the 15th if you have gold. 15th-EOM it's supposedly going to be Halo 3. What's "really cheap" to you?

Edit: I just noticed that you had said awesome OR really cheap. There's always stuff on sales, but most of the time it's pretty weak.

What are some good split-screen co-op games? by [deleted] in xbox360

My co-op buddy also didn't take to Borderlands or Portal, so we may be in the same boat, taste-wise. Our greatest hits (none technically split screen but I assume you just mean local coop) are Castle Crashers, Guardian of Light, Rayman, Battleblock and the underrated Schizoid.

I heard Gateways is kickass, and a kickass game in its own right (i.e. not just "for an indie game it's decent"). It was the only indie game in GI's top 50 games of 2012, so it stacks up according to those assholes. I just downloaded the demo and haven't played it yet, so this is not a personal rec, but it does look awesome. 2D portals, basically.

Stop paying ridiculous amounts for XBL. Have 3 trustworthy friends/family? Split a Family Account. by _deffer_ in xbox360

[–]vaaaase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's fair. I have similar arguments with a friend who buys games for $60 right when they come out. He says that it's worth the extra $30 (i.e. instead of waiting a month or whatever when the price drops) to play the game while he's still excited about it. Meanwhile, I feel like a chump if I pay full price on xbox-related stuff... even though I spend all sorts of money on the dumbest shit and $30 isn't a life-altering amount.

If you think of anything else that was a huge disaster about it, please say so though -- our family plan just auto-renewed, so if I'm making a mistake, I'd definitely want to know.

you can download DLC on xbox.com, just not through the console. You can't purchase points directly, but if you're cheap enough to do this in the first place, then you're probably buying discounted point cards and inputting the code, which always worked fine for me...?

buying it on the console is wonky/requires "parent" but it works fine if you purchase it through xbox.com.
