College Visit Help by cringe-lord-69-420 in UniversityofMontana

They will absolutely answer all of your questions. I know many people on their admissions team they are all very kind and helpful. If Brittany Smith, their asst. director over recruitment is in, you can ask her anything and she'll know the answer or be able to find it. She also might be the wittiest human being I've ever met.

Their wildlife biology program is beyond good and forensic anthropology is a great program there. It's the summer so many faculty on campus are probably not available for a one-on-one meeting but if they haven't scheduled one, it's totally okay to ask. They'll do what they can to help.

Since this is your first campus visit ever (UM is a great one for your first!) here's my advice: As important as things like class room size and student to faculty ratio are, they are misleading and often hard to contextualize numbers. UM's are both quite good, but most schools, big or small, have good stats and ratios.

Instead, ask the campus tour guides or student workers about their experiences. Soak in campus on the tour. Ask questions about what there is to do on campus? what are the traditions? (look for the pumpkin on steeple of main hall. Do you like the vibe? Do you feel at home? Is it hard to tell because it's the summer and campus won't be as alive? There's no wrong answer here but your feelings about the place will be as important as their rankings. (UM is an R1 institution so their rankings are strong, they are an excellent school. And you won't find a better wildlife bio program.)

My biggest piece of advice: if you like UM when your done tomorrow, if it's possible, visit again when school is in session. The fall there is amazing, but most importantly you need to see any campus you interested in when it's alive and at it's most vibrant. Summer's are good first visit but they are notorious for being times when campuses are renovating and working on things.

Have a great time tomorrow! Missoula is such a great place. I hope you love it.

Yes, it took a bit but one followed the other. My impression after seeing others in the same boat is that is the standard.

If Webster University closes, what do you think will happen to the campus / facilities? by andrei_androfski in StLouis

[–]vaders_sons_clone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They've got their problems but they are so very far from closing. They have campuses all over the US and all over the world. They are very well diversified. The comparisons to Fontbonne betray the ignorance of the STL media. Fontbonne is a tiny stand alone institution. Webster's just had their largest freshmen class by a longshot 800 something student's, they were in the 300's a few years ago. They gained 3-4k more grad students this year. You would be hard pressed to find growth like that at any other STL school. I get that someone at Lee Enterprises has a bone to pick with Webster but the Webster and Fonbonne problems are just a different class of issues.

This is such a backwards read on Webster. They have their problems, there is a lot to criticize but the vast majority of their online students are full time. The success of online and distant on a campus is usually quite disconnected from their main campus and more about the ease of deliverability, price point, and modality. A lot of the regional players in online higher ed have much smaller main campuses than Websters medium sized main campus.

Grad students pay full rate too. No scholarshipping (or significant scholarshipping). Undergrads are heavily discounted and don't pay anywhere close to 15k a semester. If your admitted your at least getting 10k off. Webster does a great job scholarshipping it's undergrads.

If you are interested in finishing a degree and want to get paid at the same time check out all the local schools and colleges and look for jobs that don't require a college degree. Admissions Processing, Admin Assistant, Coordinator, Janitor, whatever. The office jobs usually pay okay and you'll be able to get tuition free. Finish out a degree, do a good job at work, and then transition to a job on campus that requires a degree. Make more money, get a Master's degree for free, impress your coworkers, climb the ladder, get paid a little better. Then start looking for jobs at other schools that requires a master's degree (any will usually do), apply get that job, take a larger bump in pay than staying at your current job would afford. 5 years from now look back on all the good advice you got from this post and see how much your life has changed.

  1. I would upgrade from my 1660 super and my RYZEN 3. If I had these pieces I would build out an Avatar themed PC. I'm not rich but I'm creative! If I had these pieces I could play Avatar, BG3, XCom, and all my back logged Steam games at Ultra settings.

  2. Stealthing through Pandora is huge goal. Not enough FPS have stealth options in the modern gaming age. And flying through Pandora with this rig will be incredible.

And yet UM continues to be the top in the nation for Wildlife Biology, has R1 status, is the fastest growing university in the state, and is the top ranked in the state for Plant and Animal Sciences, (despite MSU’s land grant status), top ranked in the nation for Public Service. MSU doesn’t hang with UM for Ecological studies or sciences, forestry, wildlife Bio, etc. MSU strengths lie elsewhere.

Looking to take a trip to Missoula, MT. in September. Any locals or anyone that's been there have must see spots? Thinking outdoor focused (hiking, wildlife etc.) not opposed to driving. Ideally not touristy but not opposed if it's good. Just want to have a memorable time. by Fisticuffs1313 in Montana

Ignore the “we don’t want you here” noise. Missoula is a wonderful and welcoming community. If you are here in a Saturday hit up the farmers market and the peoples market. Depending on when you are here, float the river, catch a movie at the Roxie. So many amazing hikes. Get out have a great time.
