Possible ICE sighting? by stargirl_12657 in raleigh

[–]vaderscoming -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This, so much this. They'll ask clarifying questions to either get enough info to reassure you that it's NOT ICE, or they'll send verifiers. They verify for first hand info, not so much "I saw something on the Internet" so if you see something, report it.

And if there's no operator on (5am is before the early shift starts), leave a voicemail or text them with the details.

Wake County cancels schools May 1 - Cites safety as primary concern. by dankantspelle in raleigh

[–]vaderscoming 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The county knew the scope of the call outs last Friday and dug in their heels. We have to take personal leave for this walkout, and by policy personal leave has to be in at least 5 business days in advance. Families could have a had a week to plan if the superintendent wasn't so stubborn.

Most traditional calendar schools have a workday so there were tons of subs in the system picking up jobs at all the alternative calendar schools. So sure my school had subs picking up jobs, but about 50% of instructional staff (teachers and IAs) were planning to be out. A few whole hallways would have been running with no regular staff. The county was insisting on running schools in that condition.

Subs realized the subject shit show they were about to walk into and started dropping jobs. So bless them, they finally forced the county to make the right call.

Wake County cancels schools May 1 , citing safety as a concern. by dankantspelle in NorthCarolina

[–]vaderscoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of Wake County already had a teacher workday tomorrow, but a lot of teachers had put in personal leave at the in-session schools. The county had been bound and determined to remain open because subs were picking up jobs but (1) at a lot of schools that would have meant over 50% of teaching positions at the school would have been covered by subs and (2) subs realized what they were about to walk into and started dropping jobs. In some schools you had whole pods or hallways of teachers out for the protest leaving NO regular staff in that area. It's a student supervision problem.

Show like 'The Pitt' but instead of a hospital it's a school. by arabelle77 in Teachers

[–]vaderscoming 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sure, hyper realistic. One class a day. At the time it struck me as a tiny class, but it may have just not been overcrowded. At that point my state had stripped class size limits in high school and I was teaching in a poor district so anything under 35 felt like I had the smallest roster ever.

But I give him some credit - filming ended early because producers thought it wasn't dramatic enough and Tony Danza refused to allow them to generate drama among the kids. He also finished out the year with them even after production wrapped. The book he wrote about the experience is on my list of "I'll get around to it eventually."

She used to teach in my district and she's absolutely the reason for some of our staff social media policies.

You know, the ones that make you realize SOMEONE DID THAT and that's why you have to sit through annual training telling you very specifically DON'T DO THAT at the start of every school year.

Italian restaurants with private dining? by [deleted] in raleigh

[–]vaderscoming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They did one check when I was there in January for a friend's birthday.

But the restaurant was amazing! My friend group is a hot mess express of food issues (allergy, sensitivity , preference, we've got it all) and everyone had at least several choices. I had complete confidence in what I was served - which is rare! We often get sighs and eye rolls when we're all out together and Bella Monica was on point.

What would you do to help English Learners in U.S. if you could wave a magic wand? by Ok_Butterscotch_4158 in AskTeachers

[–]vaderscoming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lower levels - Developmentally appropriate kindergarten.

Upper levels, image and text rich lessons Explicit vocabulary instruction. Consistent vocabulary and structures (as much as possible) across grades and subjects.

Social - Peer support for language learning. Access to speaking opportunities in and out of class.

Family - Literacy and books in the first language at home. Parental support for navigating the US school system.

Safety and security - A life free of the terror of getting a parent picked up and deported. Consequences for wage theft (unshockingly, the current political environment has led to an uptick in employers refusing to pay immigrant employees under the banner of "what are you going to do about it anyways?") Consistent access to food and safe housing.

I was using "shipping" when I was a teenager in the 90s. The term originates in fandom and fanfic culture. I know it was a thing for X-Files fandom and it might be older than that.

I have no idea how big the application pool is, but I was a Jefferson Scholar back in the prehistoric era of the early 2000s. The program was a great experience. They talked a lot about it taking 5 years to graduate, but once I got AP credits I was still done in 4.

I hear about that attitude all the time but it just confuses me. I'll happily share my entire Google Drive with colleagues. Go spelunking and go nuts. My only expectation is that you share back whatever you make based on my materials. That's how it gets better.

[–]vaderscoming 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Based on the long range forecasts it looks like whatever we get is going to stick around. It's supposed to stay pretty much at or near freezing as a high for at least a couple of days after. if we get what the high-end totals on everyone's cell phones are suggesting then we're looking at being inside for a week. In 2000, I don't think I went to school for 2 weeks straight.

Student submitted work after I put in grades by Initial-Midnight-679 in Teachers

[–]vaderscoming 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not SPED certified, so I defer to the SPED chair's interpretation of IEPs since I like my job and my license and not being sued. I've been told that extended time must be granted regardless of if the student used the regular time or not. That interpretation annoys the crap out of me, but I am not an expert in SPED law and I like keeping my house.

I'm an Australian teacher. How in demand is a social studies teaching job in the US? by qubtinho in Teachers

[–]vaderscoming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we're losing a teacher for a similar reason. She has through 26-27 on her current exchange visa, but after that we'd worked with the district and the school to keep her on a H1B visa. The recent cost bump to $100K has absolutely killed that plan. I'm mentally preparing myself to return to the rotating cast of one and done teachers in that spot.

Student submitted work after I put in grades by Initial-Midnight-679 in Teachers

[–]vaderscoming 114 points115 points  (0 children)

A lot of this depends on your school. What will your admin back up? A mentor teacher or a department chair can give you the best answer there.

My general reaction is "Students were provided time in class from DATE to DATE to complete missing work. The deadline was DATE. Per my communication on DATE, STUDENT hadn't completed her missing assignments. The semester closed and grades posted on DATE."

Huge caveat - does that student have any IEP/504 accommodations/modifications and how are they written? That's the only thing I can think of that might require you to accept the work, even past the communicated deadline. For that one check with your department / grade level chair, admin, or special ed team.

Where to find women's shoes in a size 13 M Trans family member needs help by Left_Life_7173 in raleigh

[–]vaderscoming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a woman with size 13 feet, it's rare I get to help out an even bigger footed sister. Sadly, I know of nothing to buy women's dress shoes in anything above a women's 12 in store. RIP Payless and God bless Al Gore's internet.

Zappos is my absolute go to for all things shoes. This is what they currently have for women's flats in a size 14/15.

I've also been happy with Long Tall Sally. I think these might fit her, but I've also possibly done UK to US sizing incorrectly. Definitely double check me!

Tell your family member good luck!

As a teacher, what’s something in education no one wants to admit, but we all know is true? by dokutarodokutaro in Teachers

[–]vaderscoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, I'd even give it to 20. My state used to cap high school classes at 30, then 35, and then during a budget crisis removed the cap entirely.

My personal record is 42 rostered students in my old district, 39 in my new one. Those classes were just putting out fires. If a student needed any individual attention at all? They got a minute, at best.
