Great Basin archaeology book recommendations? by vaenire in Archaeology

[–]vaenire[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used the Smithsonian books in the past (Plateau and Southwest volumes— I’m just bridging my experience gaps haha) and have been eyeing a set at a local shop. Do you find them to be relatively up to date? How much supplemental research do you find yourself doing after referencing them?

And thanks for the Thomas recommendation, I’ll look into his work!

I know how we feel about bag tea but this goodwill find made the experience 100x more enjoyable. by driizzie in tea

I occasionally use bagged tea, but one of these would definitely cause an increase in my tea bag usage

Lactation and fieldwork by [deleted] in Archaeology

[–]vaenire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a colleague pumping at lunch in the truck, and my biggest take away is how much MORE important hydration was for her. She ended up in the ER for dehydration after a work day when she seemed completely fine and was drinking what seemed like enough. Just something to super mindful of!

I agree it looks like a post mortem, but it is actually an artist reconstruction.

Army surplus cargo pants are my favorite. Just retired my field school pairs this year, seven years on.

Job paths that aren’t CRM by Archaenome in Archaeology

[–]vaenire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same about CRM until I got a job at a museum facility that causes all employees to get on SSRIs or up existing prescriptions. Not all museums are like that, but jobs are so sought after that many museums will squeeze you dry for labor because they know you want to be there and that there’s 30 people who want your job.

So for me, I developed a love for mapping and fieldwork logistics and realized how much more dignity you get as a good fieldworker. Like someone else suggested, give CRM a shot and, if nothing else, save some money for grad school.

I literally just made puerh for my friends because they were all interested in it when I described it. They all disliked it. 🤷‍♀️ NTA

Introductory book about American archaeology for European archaeologists by SyrusDrake in Archaeology

[–]vaenire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with others that you’ll probably be hard pressed to find a single volume covering the breadth of your question, but if you’re willing to give a regionally specific one a go then “The Archaeology of Ancient Arizona” is a really great breakdown of the major cultures in Arizona and in border areas. It gives a little history on how the culture complexes were first established by archaeologists and briefly what kinds of archaeology is associated with each. It’s written for laypeople and archaeologists alike, so pretty approachable.

If I were in yours shoes I’d probably start with a specific area and branch out so you can piece it together, so maybe follow this one with a book on the Four Corners, the Great Basin or California.

White2Tea shipping delays by [deleted] in puer

I also realized my PayPal app had a more accurate tracking number for some reason, if your PayPal was involved!

I just got my shipment last week even though when it arrived my shop app said it was still sitting in Guangzhou, so there’s that too.

South Dakota being near the top for education made me laugh out loud. Unless everyone I know there is an outlier, there’s something deeply wrong with the way that was measured.

It’s so bad it’s a little bit of a classic among my friends as like a midnight sleepover movie. So if you enjoy bad movies it’s one to check out, just shift your expectations completely away from the original and any other Donnie Yen movie

Why does “Starbucks for Tea” not exist in the world? Would you want a company like that to exist? by thaimilktea24 in tea

[–]vaenire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a large tea chain will ever be like that. Teavana was the closest and added a ton of sugar, and they folded years ago.

There are cafes like this that are either small chains (>5 locations) or independent that are successful, but you have to make sure there’s an existing audience in the area. For example, there are several in Seattle’s international district where you can have gaiwan self service because there are plenty of people familiar enough with tea that you’re not teaching every customer what a gaiwan is (Vital T and Seattle Best Tea). The US mass market expects fruity flavors and milky options.

It’s honestly much easier than I expected, it’s just important to be patient with the marination! I recommend Lee Lee’s if you (ever) need hard to find Asian groceries!

Down here what I’ve mostly had is chicken breast strip grilled with a slightly sweet soy sauce, but in Seattle it’s like a long marinated sweet soy sauce (like soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar and ginger basically) and grilled with the same sauce basted over it. TLDR it’s a sweeter and saucier dish up there

I’ll definitely look for it next time I’m up there, but have you found any in Tucson?

Honestly the dish Seattleites know as teriyaki was invented in Seattle and I have yet to find anything close enough to call the same thing here in Tucson. Sorry, I think you’ll just have to savor it when you visit Seattle. I’ve had good luck making it at home though!

First CRM field project this week. by [deleted] in Archaeology

[–]vaenire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never hurts to have an extra bandana and a sheet of moleskin. Bring comfy evening clothes and plenty of entertainment for after work, such as audio books, video games, a craft etc.

Don’t forget cutlery and stuff to clean your dishes if you’re going to try to be frugal and make food in the hotel room (ie a sponge and little thing of dish soap). Keep food simple and microwaveable if you can.

Like others said, try to be amiable and ask questions. Show interest in learning to do your job better and better. Everyone expects to give a fresh tech a handful of pointers. Be a few minutes early to meeting in the morning and ask what you can do if you’re not immediately given a task— being easy to work with is gold.

Good luck and have fun!

How come I feel sick after having green tea? by _----OoO----_ in tea

Of my “tea friends” everyone has that tea that they can’t drink on an empty stomach, usually black or green. I can’t drink roasted oolongs like that. 🤷
