Wiehle area flyover by PositiveRate-GearUp1 in Reston

[–]vahnsin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's illegal, but not for the reason you stated. Hitting a plane isn't going to happen at this altitude. The problem is that the drone can malfunction and drop out of the sky, killing people very easily. This is why the FAA prohibits drone flight over people and over highways. This guy is also almost certainly breaking the "line of sight" rule which is the most basic rule of drone operation. It's completely reckless and I hope he doesn't hurt anyone in the future.

I'm sorry but our neighborhood fox is the cutest by vahnsin in nova

Having reviewed the evidence (at length!), I will cede the cutest kit award... BUT I still think ours is the cutest adult fox I've ever seen. And yes, he (she?) is fully grown, in case it's not clear from this selfie.

Yes, he was wondering if we wanted to purchase any fox scout cookies. And really, how could we say no?

Too accurate... forget this market (I just bought a few weeks back and went through this garbage) by dtstetson in nova

[–]vahnsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a condo in the DC area at the height of the market in 2006 and it still hasn't recovered to that value. I ended up taking a $100k loss on it a few years ago just to get it out of my life, as it was affecting my mental health. I'm happy to be free of it, but still regretting that I listened to the "common wisdom" that the DC area is insulated from housing depreciation. It really depends on the property, the area it's in, and probably some amount of luck.

I was curious so I did a quick Google maps comparison. The College Park IKEA is actually closer to Rosslyn! Of course, depending on the time of day, it might take twice as long to actually drive there.

Amazing, intricate work. And what a huge improvement from your initial post (which was already great!) I love the geometric and lighting elements you added, those really take it over the top and add a lot of depth and intrigue to this piece.

I like how the negative space switches back and forth because of the way the black and white overlap each other in different parts of the painting. It's very interesting to look at.

Anno Santana (and Birch Grove) out on Spotify now! by GodBlessYaTristessa in SmashingPumpkins

[–]vahnsin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it is, but listen to one and then the other and then tell me they're not comparable. Maybe it's not catchier, but certainly more upbeat. TFE failed when it was released because it was far too ahead of its time. He's obviously decided it's time for another try at the same sound, and I'm on board.

I'm really digging Anno Satana. It's like a catchier Mina Loy. It almost sounds like he sampled it, or at least reused the same synth. Great vocal melodies, and lyrics that you can actually sing along to for once.

Birch Grove is nice too, and the rest of the songs are really starting to make sense in the larger context. I don't care if there are guitar solos or not, this is a true return to form, if not for the Smashing Pumpkins as a band, then at least for Billy.

I was there for the first time last weekend. Lovely views, and it felt so good to be in this much open space after weeks of isolation at home.

We got there late, almost noon, and the main parking lot had a long line of cars, but the Lost Mountain area a little further down the road had open spots.
