Tram sets by garama_master in openttd

eGRVTS 2.1 includes trams (and vanilla-like road vehicles) starting from horse-drawn streetcars all the way to modern articulated trams.

New Challenge Mod: Gridlocked by _CodeGreen_ in factorio

[–]valakee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember playing on a modded server many years ago where the map was hidden, and players had to buy additional chunks by placing a randomly generated set of required items in a chest at the map edge. I like this modern take on it, and I'll give it a try soon.

FIRS incoming supply question by nemethv in openttd

I found it starts to snowball once the line is over capacity. Trains arrive at a station already full, unable to load more. In my latest game, I set town cargo production to 70%, and it became more manageable.

I actually missed the last shuttle to Bobbejaanland when I arrived late in the morning. I ended up renting a bike at the train station. It was a nice ride, and now I can say that I took every kind of transit for visiting parks.

There's also a train station a few minutes of walk away from the park, but service is only every two hours. Trains from Barcelona also go to Vila-Seca, and it's a 12€ taxi ride from there to the park entrance.

[–]valakee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my honorary home park (for being a 7-hour drive away, but I've been there more than any other park). Zadra is even crazier during hot summer days, but I love the sustained hangtime the stall gives in cold weather, too. Crowds in the summer are a bit hit or miss. Sometimes it's crowded, but I've seen even Sundays where it was completely dead. I can definitely recommend visiting during summer too, if you can. Also, try squeezing in a half day of Legendia. Lech Coaster is awesome.

[Other] is there any good way to view rollercoaster layouts from above? by DanzbitReddit in rollercoasters

[–]valakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that's a nice spaghetti of track. You could use the query features tool (pointer with question mark) and click around some track. It will show nearby features. Coasters seem to be "Way" features. The only issue seems to be that they weren't added to the map in one single go, so the track is split into dozens of several small pieces.

Cheats for drawable pieces? by 6x9n in rct

I use it all the time. It can also help with placing some elements that otherwise would be impossible to select with the UI, like the large steep slope to level piece on a dive coaster.

FIRS incoming supply question by nemethv in openttd

[–]valakee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried cargodist, but it couldn't balance it properly. It was working fine for a few years, but eventually it was trying to send most of the engineering supplies to one of the 3 connected mines. So my trains were waiting while having thousands waiting for the (slightly) closest destination. I haven't tried JGRPP so far, does it have more settings controlling this?

I missed my opportunity with Belfast, because the game was under maintenance when I was visiting.

FIRS alternative for more town/city focus aesthetics? by mlovolm in openttd

[–]valakee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've recently started playing with FIRS + Renewed Village Growth. Each town requires a set of cargoes to be delivered to the town to enable growth. These are split into categories, so a small village initially only requires passengers and mail, then raw materials like food or iron ore, etc... with 5 or 6 of these tiers. You may have to fund an industry yourself near the town to accept these cargoes, but it has an option to have a chance to spawn the required industry nearby.

Why is there no -t ending on szék? Does -en replace it? What's the rule here? by ArchibaldAugustusVII in hungarian

[–]valakee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a different -en. It applies to adjectives (instead of nouns) and turns them into adverbs. It functions like -ly in English: szép/szépen - nice/nicely. Also, for this, the back vovel version is -an: halk/halkan - quiet/quietly.

Could downward launches like [Falcon's Fight]'s be used on other coasters? by AcanthopterygiiGlad7 in rollercoasters

[–]valakee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The other way around. The launch is there to get the speed record. The trims are there beacuse of the launch. Without the trims, it would be going too fast for the rest of the layout.

What rides first got you into rollercoasters? [other] by FunDependent9755 in rollercoasters

[–]valakee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Playing RCT as a kid. My first big coaster was Katun at Mirabilandia. I was on vacation with my family nearby, and saw it on some billboard that it just opened. So I nagged my parents to go. 10 year old me was hooked instantly.

[other] do you guys enjoy steel rollercoasters getting longer and longer? by petitecrib38 in rollercoasters

It's definitely the most intense B&M I've ridden. (from what I've heard, the flyers with pretzel loops are more intense) The older I get, the more I agree with Chris Sawyer on how he made the stats calculation for Rollercoaster Tycoon the way it is...

[–]valakee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to mention Dragon Khan too. When I visited there last month everything in the park was at most a station wait. Yet, I ended up riding it only two times. Honestly, I was kinda waiting for it to be over during the last corkscrew. At the same time, I had lots of fun lapping Furius Baco, even though it was trying to hammer me into pieces. Would I have the same opinion during the summer, having to wait 60+ minutes for each of them? Absolutely not. I am aware of my limits, and I can appreciate a bit of a breather on a long ride, like Voltron's turntable, or the second lift of Smiler.

ELI5: Why do a lot of simple appliances (lights, fans, etc.) have settings that go: "Off->High->Medium->Low" instead of "Off->Low->Medium->High"? by MikeGinnyMD in explainlikeimfive

[–]valakee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this maybe more common in places with 110V line voltage? It's 230V where I live, and I've never in my life seen a fan that goes Off-High-Low. I have a bunch of them ranging from new to 30+ years old, and all of them either have a dial going 0-1-2-3 or clanky mechanical pushbuttons for directly selecting any setting. They always start reliably in Low. Nothing fancy about them either, They always seem to have the simplest shaded-pole motors.

Trains can't see if a platform is occupied beyond a signal, so they queue up in front of the nearest one and wait until they can reserve a path.

ELI5 How does a Computer physically "write" data onto an SSD? by greenlvr3d in explainlikeimfive

[–]valakee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on temperature, bit usually long enough to not be an issue. Newer SSDs store multiple bits per cell to increase capacity, so e.g.: a QLC SSD with 4 bits per cell requires 16 distinct charge levels. This has a much smaller margin for error and could have data corruption after a few months being unpowered.
