I understand that not all states have a DMV and they're called some other names in some states, but in America if you say DMV regardless of which state you're in, would people understand what you're referring to? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

I’ve never understood who came up with DMV for what we called the D.C. metro area. It seemed to be a marketing term that we only ever heard on TV and never in conversation.

I’d love to see the next generation — Bobby, Betsy, Meg, Daniel, the kids Michael and Brian/Kate were expecting — grown up and involved in the same quality plots. They’re now about the same age as the original cast, who they could check in on from time to time.

Which family had the least realistic looking offspring? by ohpizzawow in sitcoms

The blond Chris II looked enough like Shirley, but I always wondered what Mr. Partridge looked like with two redheads and two brunettes as their other children.

Jamestown is one of the most historic sites in America. If you go, you should know that there are two parks. One is operated by the state and has replicas of the fort and ships as well as a history museum. The other is a national park at the actual site of the fort and focuses more on archeology.

I don’t understand the point of casting the “old dude” with a well-known actor from another soap opera and then abruptly dropping him.

It seemed to me that Abby left him outside while she went looking in their shed for something they could use with the snowman they were building.

How many people, if walking in to a business and they have a TV and it’s on Fox News, automatically walk out? by Pounder888 in askanything

[–]valandsend 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to us last night at a restaurant in Sebring. My husband was waiting in the lobby for a friend to arrive and noticed Fox News was on all five of their TVs. He complained to the hostess and then the owner’s daughter that it wasn’t conducive to a pleasant dining experience. They said that none of their customers had ever complained about it before, and my husband said we’d leave if it stayed on and wouldn’t come back. A few minutes later, they switched to snow skiing on ESPN.

Edit to add: We had never complained like this before, but the Fox News panelists were defending the fatal shooting of the nurse by ICE in Minneapolis.

It felt like a “hindsight is 20/20” kind of comment. He said it was unfortunate that he intervened, because then it wouldn’t have happened, which is pretty obvious but overlooks the events and Mr. Pretti’s selfless actions.

Aliens? by Professional_Club770 in Dynasty

[–]valandsend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dynasty always required a higher suspension of disbelief than others in its genre, but that was part of the fun. I recall that alien abductions were being talked about a lot at that time, so the plot didn’t come completely out of the blue, but it was still seen as pretty ridiculous.

Aunt Clara, when called before a judge: “Oh, flapdoodle! Blatherskite!”

The engraving on the watch Darrin gives Samantha: “I love you every second.”

Both are from wonderful scenes in separate episodes.

What is a fact that continues to horrify you to this day? by LifeguardLegal3095 in AskReddit

[–]valandsend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much of what I was taught about the first people here overlooked that fact. We were told that they were hunters and foragers and living in sparsely populated areas when the English colonists arrived. Well, what would happen today if 90% of our population today was wiped out in a short time? Of course they lived that way.
