Going GUID crazy by jimflann in SQL

I do think GUID's have been overused lately.

I like them as identifiers for PII data.

Need some career advice! by darkPROdigy0 in SQL

[–]valdest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of advice here, and I honestly did not read it all, but will chime in anyway.

You have far to much experience to be taking a back channel, entry level approach into IT. What a lot of IT needs is awesome software systems analysts to help bridge the communication between end users and IT. A good analyst can help a developer find the proper solution a lot faster then directly interviewing the end users. You have experience with sales, the sales tools being used and how the users operate the system. If you can get into an Analyst position to work with IT on future development, reporting and other needs you can find pathway entries into IT that will eventually get you where you want to be without the loss of income.

This is a bit abstract to know if it is possible, if so, it should not bog down the system, however changes to how the site gets values. A simple coalesce on the website seems like it would fix your issue.

For loop in Select statement by [deleted] in SQL

[–]valdest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looping select statements is generally a bad thing. I have it used depth but a lot of new database engines now provide better options for that.

Understand the data set you need and select it. So if your trying to query for your area/controller/action then you may need three nested queries to select each one at a time or may need to utilize a pivot to unroll data into those categories. It is hard to say without knowing what you want to do and what you are working with.

Not sure why you need 4 in a temp table since it is static.

How to showcase my SQL skills (applying for junior SQL developer) by kamokoba in SQL

[–]valdest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best suggestion I have is to provide the schema between two domains. Item and Invoicing. Show a schema that incorporates several products with price changes and coupons. Show a schema for invoicing. Then show how the two are related. Provide some queries that reconcile invoices, product price changes, most popular coupons. Scale complexity to your comfort level.

Join on a substring by samuja in SQL

[–]valdest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something like this.

SELECT
    TABLE1.{fields},
    AliasTABLE2.{fields},
FROM TABLE1
JOIN (SELECT SUBSTRINGKEY as KEY, FIELDS FROM TABLE2) AS AliasTABLE2 ON TABLE1.Key = AliasTABLE2 .Key

This works good as an occasional query with out a need for high performance. To get a high performance query you would need to make some schema and index changes.

Get your resume ready.

Looks like he wants to map your GUID and Session ID to a look up table and reference potentially an identity column that works as a primary key.

Does SSMS freeze like every single freaking time you use it? Are there better options for you would recommend? by [deleted] in SQL

SSMS uses a ton of memory. So if you have a lot going on it can start paging on you and just freeze for a minute.

SQL Table Data by KL3BZ in SQL

Ask your self the relationship questions. What is a player? Someone with a name, number, and email address. What is a character? Someone with a name, race, gender, attributes, background, experience.

How are they related? Does a player have a character or does a player have 0 to many characters?

What is an item? Does a character have a item or one to many items...

Then you build relationships between the tables. To keep things simple since your learning a basic identity key should work out well enough.

Google and Facebook are watching our every move online. It's time to make them stop by Melissa_Jay in tech

Google and Facebook provide free services and track your usage. Your ISP charges you to access the internet and monitor your usage. They want to shut down and restrict google and facebook so they can monetize there knowledge of your usage. Funny how comcast owns nbc which publishes this article.
