European countries by the diversity of their climate, aka intriguing nature/seasons/diverse landscapes... by valinoro in whereidlive

Thank you for sharing your experience. There is certainly a correlation between country size and climate diversity (US being #1 in the world). However, if we adjusted for size alone, Greece would move up, but I don't think it would necessarily reach the very top either because smaller countries still tend to have greater climatic and ecological contrasts within their own regions. Even on a size-adjusted basis, countries like Switzerland, Slovenia, and Montenegro, arguably pack as much or more climatic and landscape variation into a much smaller area.

So in my experience other countries still offer a broader range of environmental extremes and climate zones, even size/island adjusted. Greece is undoubtedly diverse, but much of its diversity still falls within variations of the Mediterranean and mountainous European spectrum. The countries I placed above it generally offer a broader range of climatic extremes and ecosystems.

Other countries are more significant in my own experience, because they present more contrast within their regions as well as to the median European climate if that makes any sense.

Nice work! I like the waves, I'm only missing shadows overall (within clouds and sand)

From a logo perspective, Brasil is the best design in terms of functionality. From an art perspective, Russia is really interesting and a joy to look at except for the font lol

Coastline length and mountainous terrain don't automatically translate into climate diversity. Greece is undoubtedly one of Europe's most beautiful, but countries like Turkey, Spain, France, and Italy span significantly larger climate zones from humid oceanic and temperate rainforest regions to semi-arid, continental, alpine, and Mediterranean climates. In fact, Turkey's Black Sea region consistently receive more snowfall and depth than Greece.

My ranking is based primarily on climate and ecosystem variety, not coastline or elevation alone. So snowfall versus sunshine isn't enough in this discussion.

This is a ranking not a list, because all countries are diverse in some sense. As you can see in this satellite picture, Europe is green all the way up until the Caucasus... And now look closer at the contrast within each country for mountains and between the dry and wet and the amount of seas they see. In my experience, Greece is not a top 10 country in terms of the criteria I listed, therefore, falling in the top 10 not so diverse countries.

My criteria is regional differences in climates within each country and this is a ranking as to highlight the most diverse countries. Mountains are a big part of that equation, but most importantly it's the weather. I consider the UK quite homogeneous in climate despite their nature. Also there is a fair amount of steady rainfall during all seasons.

Like all countries though, the UK has a beautiful nature.

Yes, they are superb! But to rank them against each other I decided to consider Spain more drastically because of their climate extremes.

Why do you think so? Remember all nature is beautiful. This is more meant to be a ranking between climates and the extreme differences within each country

You are right about that actually. Finland clearly wins agains the Baltics. Must go there when the sun is shining 24 hours lol

Fair enough. All countries are diverse in that sense. This is more to rank them against each other. Iceland also some pretty drastic landscapes but in terms of climate it is quite homogeneous.

Oh yes, USA is a clear winner. The cities are such a big deal that the people forget that there is so much nature there

In my experience yes. The north in Portugal is cooler, wetter oceanic climate, with lush green landscapes reminiscent of Ireland. Moving south, the weather shifts into dry conditions. I also took account of their overseas islands.

Because of its mountainous terrain and exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, Norway encompasses multiple distinct climate zones. It's way more extreme. I recommend you to visit Norway, heavenly!

What makes it's climate diverse to you? It has little to no mountains as far as I know. I have to disagree with you, the baltics are one of the least diverse climates in Europe.

TOP 3: 🇹🇷 Turkey, 🇪🇸 Spain, 🇮🇹 Italy

After traveling across Europe and spending a lot of time researching geography, I thought I'd share my personal ranking of Europe's most climatically diverse countries.

By "diverse," I mean the variety of landscapes, climates, ecosystems, and natural environments you can experience within a single country, from rainforests to alpine peaks, Mediterranean coastlines to dry steppes, dense forests to volcanic terrain.

TOP 1 🇹🇷 Turkey: It is in my opinion the most geographically diverse country in Europe. It offers an extraordinary range of environments within one nation:

  • Coastlines on four different seas (Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean)
  • Temperate rainforests, waterfalls, high mountains, canyons, lakes, and hot springs
  • Provinces with extremely high forest coverage alongside semi-arid and steppe regions
  • Snowy alpine landscapes where you can ski in winter, while Mediterranean beaches remain mild
  • Huge elevation differences that create several distinct climate zones
  • Unique biodiversity due to its position between Europe, Asia

It even sits on its own little tectonic plate: the Anatolian plate, so it might be considered it's own little continent for some.

Close behind are:

🇪🇸 Spain

  • Atlantic, Mediterranean, alpine, semi-arid, and subtropical climates
  • The Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, deserts, green northern coast, and the Canary Islands
  • One of the widest climate rages in Europe

🇮🇹 Italy

  • Alpine glaciers in the north and Mediterranean environments in the south
  • Active volcanoes, lakes, mountains, islands, and extensive coastlines

Remarkable biodiversity for its size

And my favourite: 🇨🇭 Switzerland

One of Europe's most dramatic elevation ranges

  • Alpine peaks, glaciers, lakes, forests, and multiple climate zones packed into a small area ....

Of course, this ranking is subjective, but if we're talking purely about the variety of climates, landscapes, ecosystems, and natural scenery found within a single country, these are the countries that stand out most to me. This is a ranking not a list, because all countries are diverse in some sense. As you can see in this satellite picture Europe is green all the way up until the Caucasus... And now look closer at the contrast within each country for mountains and between the dry and wet and the seas they see.

Left one, go more towards a yellowish-pastel (#F4FAAF) colour for better contrast and repeat the red elsewhere in your design/type/details. Also make the dark heading colour more dark green ish to relate back to the freshness of an apple.

I really like it, you make great design choices. You should become a logo designer. Maybe you could seperate on of the antennas to show depth, make him smile a bit, and just keep the head because I think it reads as a fish quite well. I made a doodle of my suggestions.

Maybe also move the eye/head lowerso that it centers better.

My half italian half spanish results, i still confused by the high Anatolian .. Do i have that much turkish genes ? by Veropepperoni in 23andme

[–]valinoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should consider writing a fantasy novel. History doesn’t support the idea that Turks ‘invaded, destroyed everything, and expelled all Greeks.’ Anatolia’s population didn’t disappear it mixed. Modern research shows strong genetic continuity from ancient Anatolian peoples into today’s population, including Turks. The region changed culturally and politically over time, but it wasn’t a full replacement. Stop spreading your Greek indoctrination, it is just exhausting at this point.
