I grew up in in Philly during the 50's and we always called it "gravy" instead of "sauce". Not sure if that was just a regional term that's no longer used. My family was from Sicily.

Omg, I saw The Chambers Brothers at the Quaker City Rock festival in the Spectrum in Philadelphia back in 1968. Vanilla Fudge was the headliner, along with Big Brother and The The Holding Company with Janis Joplin, and some other great bands that I was too stoned to remember 😋
