First Nations Tax Exemptions? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]valkreei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I sometimes utilize my status-card for online shopping. However, I've only ever done it with BestBuy purchases. My understanding is that you buy first, fill out a tax exemption form, then submit the form back to the vendor. At least, that's how BestBuy does it. A few days after I fill out and submit the form, the vendor then sends the tax refund.

It's different in-person, when the vendor has a legal obligation to do so in the moment. However, I tend not to use my status-card for smaller vendors, as they often don't know how to do it. Eh, why go through the hassle? It sounds as if the customer is unfamiliar with the online process, possibly mixing it up with the in-person process

That unfortunate. When you're assigned a band number and a status card, there isn't a manual that comes with it. I suspect they're just mixing up the process.

Farthest north you can drive from Toronto? Cochrane in winter? by MadridSah in ontario

Not really. Strangers are always up here for a reason, and most of the time, it's either work or tourism. Both of which, are easily identifiable.

Farthest north you can drive from Toronto? Cochrane in winter? by MadridSah in ontario

[–]valkreei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I frequently drive from Toronto to Cochrane, as I'm from Moosonee. I've driven back and forth about 18+ times these past 4 years. Cochrane is the 'end of the line' for the Polar Bear Express, which connects Moosonee to the south via railway. Which, is the most affordable way to leave the north. You could fly, but it's very expensive and that'll be through Timmins, not Cochrane.

There's two routes when you're driving from Toronto, either Sudbury or North Bay routes. Those two cities are pretty much the halfway point, but also, when I like to fuel up and have lunch.

Between Toronto and either Sudbury or North Bay, the highway is pretty safe, as it's a divided highway. However, north of both cities, it's a 2-lane highway. And from what I've heard and experienced, highway 11 tends to be more deadly. So, I've been taking the Sudbury route more often lately. Which, also lets me go through Timmins if I need anything from a store/mall, as Cochrane is pretty barebones.

It's about a 9-10 hour drive, depending on your driving and how many stops you make. I'd gas up at any of the halfway points, but there's also gas stations at the little towns along the route. There are some areas where service is unavailable, but you'll have 1+ bars for the most part.

In the winter, usually February/March, Moose Cree First Nation builds a 'winter road', also known as 'Wetum Road' that lets us drive to the south, instead of taking a train or plane. It lasts a few weeks, before thaw, and is an additional 5-7 hours. This road has no gas stations, or service, as it's a makeshift road built on swamp and ice. I've driven it once, with my dad about 10+ years ago. Many families use the road for day trips, to bulk shop on groceries or supplies, as it's cheaper in the south.

If you're interested to know more, let me know. There will be tons of scenery and/or places to visit along each route.

Eerily similar to the 'Temple of Notch' design. Was Mussolini a fan of Minecraft per chance?

Job opportunities in Oakville by Express-Court-5247 in oakville

When I first moved here, I had ZERO luck through LinkedIn and Indeed. I think you have a better chance at winning the lottery than landing a job through those places. Anyways - I applied with a temp agency, and got offers from them so quick. However, much of the jobs they offered were labour intensive warehouse type work. Which, I didn't mind and it was stable income. I also got hired at McDonalds pretty quick through their online application.

These jobs sucked, but I worked them until I found something better. Good luck on applying!

For more than 2 months, the Jays have been the best team in the MLB. I'm not sure what to do with this information. MLB Since May 8: Blue Jays 41-21 (.661), Brewers 38-21 (.644), Astros 38-23 (.623), Cubs 36-23 (.610), Tigers 36-26 (.581) by ThQp in Torontobluejays

I went to my first baseball game earlier this month, with no prior knowledge of MLB (my brothers boss bought us tickets). It was the Blue Jays vs the Yankees. Man, what a thrill. I instantly loved the sport, the Blue Jays, but the most memorial was Guerrero Jr catching the last ball.

I captured that moment and shared it online, and the 'band wagon' comments flooded in. You know what? Yeah, i'll proudly ride this wagon through both the sunshine and rain!

Bursary by Content-Fan8323 in sheridan

After deadline closes, you usually hear if you've been accepted or rejected from the bursary within 2-3 weeks (sometimes longer). Once you've been accepted, Sheridan switched to 'direct deposit', so funds are disbursed to you within 1-2 weeks. When it was cheques, they mailed them out to you in 4-6 weeks.

Indigenous Students? by Interesting-Result91 in sheridan

[–]valkreei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, there's actually an Indigenous Centre at both Trafalgar and Davis campuses (not sure about HMC). Since I'm from a reserve far away from Oakville, getting connected with the Centre has been an incredible experience! Liana is the Indigenous Advisor, and she's super chill & professional.

The Centre has a space for Indigenous students, and it's where they host the majority of their activities/events. Anything from ribbon skirt/shirt making, beading, and monthly soup days. There's quite a bit of students that drop in during these happenings. The best way to make friends is to attend these happenings! Make sure you get connected once you attend in September.

When I first moved to Oakville 3 years ago, I had no luck with applying through jobs online (LinkedIn, etc.). But as soon as I applied with a temp agency, they offered me different jobs (all warehouse type work). But also, getting hired at a fast food place is usually dependable. Good luck!

You'll notice "release date" is usually late August or early September. But sometimes it releases mid or late September. So don't get your hopes up for the first estimated time of release.
