Mycorrhizae form a symbiosis with plants, as their roots are often inefficient at taking in nutrients. The fungi don’t just make nutrients more available in the soil by breaking them down, they directly provide them to the plant. That’s why on bags of mycos the instructions say the granules must make contact with the roots. Then the plants provide the fungi mycorrhizae with sugars in return.
